Intro to Democratic Participation through Digital Literacy

Essential Standards:

ELA Language: 4. Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grades 910 reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies. ELA Language: 6. Acquire and use accurately general academic and domain-specific words and phrases, sufficient for reading, writing, speaking, and listening at the college and career readiness level Social Studies/Science Writng: 4. Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. Social Studies/Science Writng: 6. Use technology, including the Internet, to produce, publish, and update individual or shared writing products, taking advantage of technologys capacity to link to other information and to display information flexibly and dynamically.

Important Standards:
ELA Speaking and Listening: 3. Evaluate a speakers point of view, reasoning, and use of evidence and rhetoric, identi fying any fallacious reasoning or exaggerated or distorted evidence. ELA Speaking and Listening: 1. Initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grades 910 topics, texts, and issues, building on others ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively. Social Studies/Science Writing: 10. Write (type) routinely over extended time frames (time for reflection and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences.

Worthy to highlight:
Social Studies/Science Reading: 8. Assess the extent to which the reasoning and evidence in a text support the authors claims. Social Studies/Science Writng: 5. Develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach, focusing on addressing what is most significant for a specific purpose and audience.

Understandings:

Essential Questions: How will being digitally literate help me and others? (introduce this question) Why is it important to have an opinion and share it? -Should all opinions be shared? In what ways will my participation help me and others? Students will know: Specialized vocabulary within -Democratic Participation -Digital Literacy How to utilize context to determine meaning How to write a formal letter using Microsoft Word How to develop an authentic proposal The process for drafting and revising and why it is pertinent to their writing practices How to share their writing/work digitally (attachments and publishing)
Students will be able to do: Use the tools that they gain to determine the meaning of unknown words Evaluate a speakers opinion, pov and reasons (or lack thereof) as they peer review. Determine and use specialized vocabulary for: democratic participation & digital literacy Write a proposal, based on their opinion and data, using Microsoft Word. Practice writing clearly and coherently in order to develop and organize their thoughts for a specific purpose and audience Use technology to share opinions and ideas, specifically their proposal

Stage 2-Assessment
To be determined as a class Performance Task: Formal Proposal Goal: Write a proposal Role: You are a student at VISA who is proposing.. Audience: Situation: Performance/product/process: You will be completing a final proposal in the form of a formal letter (Microsoft word). Your proposal will be turned in at turnitin.com, as well as to your authentic audience. Standards of performance: You may use the rubric provided to be sure to meet all required components of this task
