Scrap Metal Barge a Success!

After years of planning and working on ideas to rid our community of the massive amounts of metal that is originally shipped to Sand Point in the form of a useful commodity and ultimately ends up as scrap metal - scrap metal that has clogged our landfill and been an eyesore in our community - the City, with assistance from the tribes-has successfully hauled, stockpiled and loaded a barge that has taken approximately 100 tons of scrap metal out of Sand Point! The barge arrived late Wednesday afternoon (August 17th) and left port, headed for King Cove on Saturday morning. Howard Smith and the entire Public Works crew deserve a huge pat-on-the-back for the professional way they handled the entire operation from preparation of the scrap metal materials (draining oils, removing refrigerants and crushing), to the hauling, staging and final loading of the barge this difficult and potentially dangerous event came off with few problems and our community is much cleaner because of their efforts. Although we were not able to haul all the scrap metal that has accumulated over these many years, the City continues working on bringing a second barge to our community to finish the job. For now, however, the City of Sand Point continues to set the example of how to properly and effectively deal with solid waste issues in rural Alaska.

News from the Police Department

During the August 9, 2011 City Council meeting, Sand Point Police Officer Nate Taylor received his Basic Police Certification Certificate. This is one of the three levels of certifications an Alaskan Peace Officer can earn during their Law Enforcement career. Even though it may be the first level of certification, the basic certification is perhaps the hardest to acquire. Within the first 12-14 months of employment, a newly appointed police officer must show their worth in many ways and meet stiff qualifications in order to step among the ranks of other proven officers throughout the State of Alaska. This is certainly a well-earned award for such a fine officer. Congratulations to Officer Taylor for his accomplishment!

Harbor News Greetings from the Robert E. Galovin Small Boat Harbor! A lot has happened since the last newsletter, aside from just the general maintenance and upkeep of the harbor. Floats The crew has been busy building new floats for the B and C floats. They have four more to construct and change. This has been an on-going process and has taken ten years or more, but the forty foot floats will all have been changed. The City is in the process of having the whole infrastructure of the small boat harbor re-

Richard Kochuten Sr.

done. Inspectors came and evaluated the small boat harbor. After 30 years of service, the harbor has seen a lot of wear and tear and the inspectors did not give the harbor very high marks. The monies are being gathered for Phase 1 of the re-build. The date is yet to be determined but we are hoping that this will begin within the next year. Increased Rates and Improvements For the first time in over twenty years, the rates for moorage, haul out, storage, ect., have all been re-adjusted. They may seem extravagant; however, the rates at the Sand Point Boat Harbor are still among the lowest in the State of Alaska. The new rates will also help with the rebuilding of the old infrastructure. Ferry Schedule The season is winding down for the ferry runs. There will be three tieups heading West on September 1st, 15th, and 29th, with the last run heading East on Oct. 2nd. The freight boats will still keep a steady schedule, arriving every Thursday or Friday with very little variance. The boats seldom stop at the City dock on the Southbound leg so if you bring freight to go South we will put it on the boat going North. It will eventually arrive in Seattle or at points South just not as soon as you might expect, unless you can catch the boat on the Southbound leg at Trident. Kids Dont Float The Silver Salmon derby is scheduled for Labor Day weekend. That should be a great time as usual. The harbor crew has put the Kids Don't Float life jacket boxes out in various places. Thank you to the Pauloff Harbor Tribe and City for ordering more life vests and making sure there are enough vests for all the users. Over the years, Kids Dont Float life jackets have been picked up on the beaches, which is okay because it shows that the younger people are using them and we want to encourage them to continue to do so, even if they are occasionally forgotten.
