THE MARKS ESTATE
The Marks Estate, a.k.a. Clarence H. Cooke residence, is an excellent example of an architecturally significant Hawaiian-style home in the late 1920s - early 1930s, with sprawling space, numerous lanais, high hipped C.W. Dickey roof and lush garden grounds. The estate was purchased from the Marks family by the state of Hawaii in 1956 and later placed on the Hawaii & National Registry of Historic Places.

Well planned and crafted with high regard to details, the house was built for and known for its lavish and opulent entertainment.
As such, it epitomizes the finest traditions in upper class residential design in Hawaii for its period. The mansion represents the work of a master, Hardie Phillip, an associate of the New York architectural firm Mayers, Murray and Phillip. This firm was responsible for the design of several outstanding Hawaiian-style buildings in Honolulu, including the Honolulu Academy of Arts, C. Brewer Building and the residence of former Governor Carter. The estate is also significant for its association with Clarence Hyde Cooke, one of the more prominent men of his time in Hawaii. He was the second son of Charles H. and Anna Rice Cooke, and the grandson of missionaries William Harrison Rice and Amos Starr Cooke. The latter helped found the firm of Castle & Cooke in Honolulu. The Marks Estate is a mansion rendered in Hawaiian-style architecture. The two-story white-washed brick and frame property features an asymmetrical plan which lends the building a sense of sprawling informality. The house is laid out with two wings running perpendicularly in opposite directions off a formal entry hall. A number of lanais extend out from the principal rooms on both the ground and second floors. A vine covered porte-cochere extends diagonally out from the intersection of the makai (ocean side) wing and the entry area. It has segmental arched openings and is paved with Chinese granite blocks. A tiled fountain can be found at the corner of the portecochere. The roof of the porte-cochere serves as a second story, open lanai, with a doorway that leads to the second floor hall. The interior of the house reserves much of its lovely originality. Doors made of Australian gum tree wood still retain their original hardware. The kitchen and baths also hold their original cabinets and fixtures. The entry hall accommodates the vertical circulation, a stairway with a metal and wood banister, and also provides access to the dining room, living room, office library, and kitchen wing. In the rear of the kitchen wing, the second story lanai area was enclosed in the 1950s. Albert Ely Ives was the architect commissioned to work on the remodeling. The doors immediately opposite of the main entrance lead from the hall to the major living space in the mauka (mountain side) wing of the house - a large, classic style living room with plastered walls and ceiling. This room contains a fireplace embellished in marble, a picture window looking out to the grand pagoda and a doorway that opens out onto the covered portion of the lanai with a direct view of the majestic pool via the dining room. The covered segment of the lanai has a teak ceiling and a set of three segmental archways separating it from the uncovered part of the lanai. To the right of the living room is the recreation room-both rooms open to a brick paved courtyard. The courtyard is defined by the main house, a high brick wall, and a single-story row of three guest cottages. The cottages and their bathrooms retain their original characters and fixtures. Bedrooms and baths primarily occupy the second floor in both wings. The master bedroom has a fireplace and all the bedrooms have access to a lanai. The master bathroom has a magnificent dressing room with mirrored closets. All the closets in the master room are cedar lined.

A gatehouse stands at the entry to the property. A rear covered walkway connects a four-car carriage garage to the main house. The rear of the property gently slopes down to a small stream and extends back to the Pali Highway. There are pathways leading to the swimming pool with a neoclassical revival dressing room. The dressing room is a modest one-story rectangular building of masonry construction. It has an inset lanai with Tuscan columns. The pool, dressing room, and their accompanying stairs and walks were built in 1920, following the plans of architect Hart Wood.
Even Hollywood has been charmed by the estates time-honored architecture. Movie and television productions have filmed on the property including Magnum P.I. and the original Hawaii 5-0.
