Setting of the Community What is a Healthy Community?

Some of the elements described include: Access to health care services that focus on both treatment and prevention for all members of the community; a safe community; the presence of roads, schools, playgrounds, and other services to meet the needs of the people in that community; and a healthy and safe environment. WHO defines a healthy community as "one that is continually creating and improving those physical and social environments and expanding those community resources that enable people to mutually support each other in performing all the functions of life and in developing to their maximum potential." With these characteristics serving as a guide, we can create a clear image of what a community should be. Our chosen community is Barangay 837 which is located at Zone 91, Pandacan, Manila. Manila Manila is the capital of the Philippines. It is one of the sixteen cities comprising Metro Manila. With a population of 1,660,714 in 2006, Manila is the second most populous city in the Philippines. The populace inhabits an area of only 38.55 square kilometers, making Manila the most densely populated city in the world. However, Metro is the most populous metropolitan area in the Philippines and the 11th in the world with an estimated population of 16,300,000. The greater urban area is the fifthlargest in the world with an estimated population of 20,654,307 people. The city is divided into six legislative districts and consists of sixteen geographical districts: Binondo, Ermita, Intramuros, Malate, Paco, Pandacan, Port Area, Quiapo,

Sampaloc, San Andres, San Miguel, San Nicolas, Santa Ana, Santa Cruz, Santa Mesa and Tondo. Within their precincts can be found areas of bustling commerce and some of the most historically and culturally significant iconic landmarks in the country as well as the seat of the executive and judicial branches of the government.

Pandacan Pandacan is a district of the City of Manila , located south of the banks of the Pasig River and belongs under the 6th congressional district of Manila, divided into thirty eight (38) Barangays that includes Zone 90 to Zone 95 and Barangays 833 to 872. Based on a year 2000 survey of the National Statistics Office, Pandacan has a total population of close to eighty two thousand, one hundred ninety four (82,194). The district is bounded to the east by the Pasig River, the district of Sta. Ana to the southwest Ermita to the east and the district of Paco to the northeast. Majority of the residents of Pandacan belong to the generally lower to upper middle class brackets. Original residents were gainfully employed as blue collar workers in the nearby factories and oil depot, while some working in white collar jobs are employed in nearby Makati City, the country's central business district. Pandacan's western section, along the street formerly called Otis (now Dra. Paz Mendoza-Guazon St.) was once a row for manufacturing such as a coconut oil processing, rope making facility, including the central bottling and distribution center of Coca Cola in the Philippines. One can also find along Guazon street the major car dealerships and their respective showrooms for Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Ford and Sinuzo.

Barangay 837 Barangay 837 is located in Zone 91, Pandacan, Manila, headed by Chairman Jesse Ramos. Its boundaries are: in North is Sta. Maria St., in South is Lorenzo Dela Paz, in East is Jesus Extension and in West is Isidro Certeza St. It is headed by Chairman Jesse Ramos. Barangay covers 5

hectares and its total population is 6, 250. The community is classified as non-depressed according to the Chairman. Most of the population is high school graduates. Majority of the occupation is blue-collar type. Nearly everyone use cell phone as means of communication and jeep as means of transportation. People can avail

services from facilities like Health Center, Fire Station and Day Care Centers. Business centers like Pharmacy, Canteens, Water Stations, Bakery and Sari-sari stores are also available in the community. Many social organizations were also established in the community and a lot of people joined in these. These keep the bond and cooperation among the citizens. The community envisions itself to keep peace and order, to serve constituents and to keep the Barangay clean and green. In spite of the problems faced by the community, we can say that the community works with its best efforts to achieve a healthy status
