The Chairman of PNB, K.R Kamath becomes the Chairperson of Indian Banks Association (IBA) in 66th meeting at Mumbai. Lt. General (Retd.) Nirbhaya Sharma becomes the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh after replacing General J.J. Singh. Shashi Kant Sharma(previously Defence Secretory) become the Head of Comptroller and Auditor General after replacing Vinod Rai Who served for five and half hour as he reached to 65. But the tenure of CAG is 6 yr. An Indian origin Shreekant Shrinivasan becomes the judge of 2nd most powerful U.S court of Appeal D.C circuit Kalyan Jyoti Sengupta (Previously in Uttarakhand) becomes the Judge of Andhra Pradesh High Court. And Sanjay Kishan Col (previously in Delhi) becomes the judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court form this May 2013. An Indian Origin Devanand Sharma is appointed as and Ambassador of Australia in Israel. The government has appointed Thomas Mathew as interim chairman of Life Insurance Corporation of India. SK Roy assumed charge as managing director of LIC on Friday.

Man Booker International Prize 2013 was given to an American Writer Lydia Davis for The end of stories and Varieties of Disturbance in London. The list of 10 shortlisted writers has Indian U.R Anantmurti. It is a 60 thousand pound prize which is given to the utmost writer of World in literature in every 2 year. Started in 2005 (Albanias Ismail Kadare) in 2007 (Nigerias- Chinua Achebe) in 2009(Canadas Alice Munro) in 2011 (Americas Phillip Rothe). Ahilyabai Holker Award of U.P region which was halted by Mayawati get resumed by Akhilesh Yadav and Prize amount has been increased from 1lac to 5 lac. Hariharan got MPs Lata Mangeshkar music award 2012-2013 12 May International Nursing Day, Prez Pranab Mukherjee awarded 35 nurses Florence Nightingale Award 2013. Sudarshan Patnayak an artist who gets awarded in Copenhagen Denmark for his sand art: Go green Save Earth. Premlata Aggarwal from Jamshedpur, Padma shree Awarded is Indias first woman who climbed on highest point of six continents and made a record. She is of 50 and made a record of climbing Everest in this age. She completed her mission by climbing Mt. McKinley of North America.

Economics and Business


Heavy Gold imports put pressure on Current Account Deficit (CAD). CAD occurs when a country's total imports of
goods, services and transfers are greater than the country's total export of goods, services and transfers. This situation makes a country a net debtor to the rest of the world. To curb this issue Government and RBI increases the Import duty on Gold from 6 to 8%.

Cabinet Approves the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Bill 2013 to protect the interest of
home buyers ensures fair practices. Developers must have to register the building plans, time plans etc. and misleading advertisements would be punishable offence.

Ministry of Rural Development has started a Skill development Skill : ROSHINI for 50,00 Tribal
youths. This scheme follows the Himayat project model, which was launched in J&K and has been implemented in Sukma (Chhattisgarh) and West Singhbhum (Jharkhand).

World Banks see Indias Economic Growth rising to 5.7 % in 2013-14. PM Manmohan Singh has approved the start wok of Delhi Amritsar-Kolkata corridor. This will benefit
40% population across 7 states and creates 30 lac new jobs.

According to Agriculture Ministry, countrys food grain production has been revised upward by 5MT to 255.36MT Countrys industrial performance was the worst in the past 20yrs. With the 4.8% GDP growth rate during fourth quarter, the GDP of India grew by 5% during 2012-13. The growth was substantially below the 10 years average growth rate of 8%. Growth rates in 1950-80 were known as Hindu rate of growth which was 3.5%. Agriculture growth dropped by 1.4% a two year low in fourth quarter due to drop in kharif crops and low rabi wheat production. But in 12th five year plan target is annual 4% growth rate. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Govt. of India signed a $252 Million loan to continue improving rural roads in Assam, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and W.B. it will construct 3461 km road which will benefit 1600 rural inhabitation. Cabinet committee of Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved a proposal to abolish the levy-sugar mechanism. State will now purchase sugar form open market through bidding process and sell it in ration shops; The difference between the prices will be borne by centre, but will a cap to two years. This decision has been taken on the recommendation of C. Rajarajan Committee on Sugar de-control. MoP and NTPC have signed a MoU for 2013-14 which includes- NTPC will work to generate 242BU, strive to produce 4MMTPA coal from its own captive mines, MoP will assist in Fuel Security, land acquisition and ash utilization. A recent survey of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has indicated that the confidence index in Indian companies has slowed down a bit from 51.3 to 51.2 in the Q1 of 2013-14. According to MoCI the export of merchandise increases by 1.68% during April 2013. Bank of Bahrain and Kuwait opens its first branch in Kerala. GoI is likely to introduce CTT (Commodity Transaction Tax) which will be levied on non-agriculture commodity, both seller and buyers have to pay tax calculated with 0.01%, it will bring transparency to the market.

India on 22nd May successfully Test Fired 290km range BrahMos Supersonic Cruise Missile from Navys new guided missile frigate INS Tarkash off the coast of Goa. Tarkash is advanced Talwar Class. This warship along with two other INS Teg and INS Trikand have been built as a part of 8000 crore deal with Russia, where Trikand is expecting to be commissioned. All the three ships have vertical configuration of missile launch which can carry up to 300kg of warhead and cruise at the speed of 2.8 Mach, 2.8 times the speed of sound. The union Cabinet granted the classical language status to Malayalam language which has been spoken by 3.33 crore of people. It joins as a fourth classical south language after Tamil, Kannada and Telgu. IAF inducted Pilatus PC MK-II as a basic trainer aircraft. It is a Swiss manufactured aircraft having facilities of aerobatics, tactical and night flying. India and Singapore have inked a fresh pact to extend the use of training and exercise facility in India by Singapore Air Force and Army for 5 years. It is the only country to which India offering such facility. Prez had approved the proposal to establish the permanent benches of Karnataka High Court in Gulburga and Dharawad. To boost infrastructural development cabinet gave its nod to proposal to set up two major ports in W.B and Andhra Pradesh. State govt. has proposed three sites for port- Nakkapalli in Vishakhapatnam, Ramayaapatnam and Dugarajapatnam. New ports will be notified as a Major Port under the Indian ports Act, 1908. Major ports come under central Govt. There are 12 major ports- Kolkata-Haldia, Pradip, Vishakhapatnam, Ennore, Chennai, V.O Chidambaranar (Tuticorin), New Mangalore, Mormugao, Mumbai, Jawaharlal Nehru (JNPT) and Kandla. The Union Cabinet raised the income limit for the Creamy Layer OBC from 4.5 LPA to 6 LPA in the view of increase in Consumer Price Index (CPI). It doesnt match with the recommendation of the National Commissions dual concept which uses 12 LPA for urban and 9LPA for rural areas. PM MM Singh paid a visit to Japan in last week of May and talked about to address multiple challenges the IndiaPacific region. Japans PM- Shinzo Abe. They decided to talk on civil nuclear deal that would allow japan to export nuclear reactor to India. At the end a joint statement has been issued stating the advantages of civil nuclear deal and nuclear safety. The United Nations General Assembly approved and Arab-backed resolution calling for political transitition in Syria. 107 countries voted in favour of the resolution where 59 abstentions. France becomes the 14th Country to legalize the same sex marriage. President Fracois Hollande signed a bill into a law which was followed by debates and protests. Chinese govt. gave nod to environmental assessment of controversial 2GW Shuangjiangkou Dam (314m) project on the Dadu River. This would be chinas tallest dam. But currently worlds tallest dam is Nurek Dam (300) in Tajikistan on Vakhsh River. Indias tallest is Tehri dam(260.5m) on Bhagirathi river. The US Senate Judiciary Panel gives its nod to US immigration Bill which paves way to 11 Million people including 2.6 lacks Indians. Zimbabwe Prez- Robert Mugabe signed a new Constitution into law replacing a 33 year old document forged in dying days of British colonial rule. The constitution was approved massively in referendum. It checks absolute power of president. And a man can enjoy maximum of two terms as a president. Sardar Ramesh Singh Arora becomes the first Sikh member in Pakistans Punjab Assembly. Egypts highest court ruled that Islamist dominated legislature and constitutional panel were illegally elected. It also ruled as illegal, the body who drafted the constitution that was approved in popular referendum. Anti-Smoking law comes into force on 1st June in Russia with an ambitious aim to cut the number of smoker half and improve public health. In initial stage it banned smoking in bus, metros, educational insti, hospitals etc. U.S imposed new sanctions on Iran targeting the already-devalued currency and automobile industry as it mounted the pressure on Iran to give up its notorious nuclear programme. Bangladeshs Cabinet has given its nod to draft a law for development of Hindu religious properties and protect them from encroachment and land grab. Nawaz Sharif elected as Pakistans PM to and unprecedented third term and promised to fix ailing economy and electricity blackouts and also calling for an end to American drones attack to tribal areas. China successfully launched its 5th and longest manned space mission with three astronauts including one woman on board Shenzou-10 from Jiuquan satellite launch centre in Gansu to build a permanent space lab of its own by 2020. Shenzou-9 carried chinas first woman astronaut Lin Yang.

Chelsea wins Europa League title after defeating Benfica in Amsterdam and lifted the title for the first time. Karnataka clinches 64th Rangaswamy Cup (donated by The Hindu Group) Senior National hockey Championship beating UP in Bangalore. Serena Williams of the US won the womens Single title of the Rome Masters beating Victoria Azarenka. It was Serenas 51st career title and fourth consecutive title of the year. And in Womens double Su-Wei-Hsieh and Peng Shuai beat Italian pair of Sarra Errani and Roberta Vincii. Spains Rafael Nadal trounced Switzerlands Roger Federer to win the mens Single Rome Master. And in doubles Mike and Bob Bryan of U.S defeated Mahesh Bhupati and Rohan Boppana. Rafael Nadal clinched French open 2013 after defeating Spains David Ferrer in Paris. Serena Williams Cliched French open 2013 After Defeating Russias Maria Sharapova Kenyas Oloitiptip and Cherono clinched Elite Mens Title and emerge champion in TCS World 10K in Bangalore. Sergey Karjakin of Russia claimed the Norway Chess 2013 Super tournament as he played against his Bulgarias Veselin Topalov. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has Sanctioned 3 Crore rupees to Mary Kom Boxing Foundation where Manipur Govt. gave land for the project.
