DAY 1

THE
ISMUN
JOURNAL
Amity International School, Pushp Vihar
A message from our
respected

PRINCIPAL
MA'AM
The ability of Amitians to showcase themselves as confident and vigilant delegates has
made ISMUN'22 a great success. Our Chairperson Ma’am and Founder President Sir’s
vision of shaping Amitians as young, smart and responsible diplomats that are leaders in
their fields was brought to life. Even after facing the drawbacks of the pandemic,
ISMUN’22 was conducted with the same enthusiasm and pride presented by each member
of the organising committee, the Executive Board, InternationaI Press and the delegates.
This journey has been momentous, and we continue to strive to keep that up for the
coming years. I am utterly proud of my students who conducted the conference in the
most commendable manner possible.

Words of encouragement
from our respected

VICE PRINCIPAL
MA'AM

Our beloved Chairperson ma’am has provided her Amitians with numerous opportunities to
grow and thrive as successful and respectful individuals, the Model United Nations circuit
being just one of them. I would like to extend a heartfelt congratulations to all my young
delegates, of whom I am ever so proud, for flourishing over the course of this three day
conference. I hope they will take away fruitful lessons like salient leadership skills from
ISMUN 2022, which they will carry with them throughout their entire lives.

A message from
OVEE CHACHAD
CHAIRPERSON, UNHRC

My MUN journey is one that I consider completely personally developing which has shaped and
enhanced my personality immensely. It all started with JAMUN in 2015 when I was a tiny 5th
grader, and being a delegate in a committee of about 100 others, what I realised was the work of
an Executive Board must be exhausting. But coming to the level of being the Secretary General of
ISMUN, I have come across every sphere of MUNs, from diplomacy, foreign policy, committee
impact to basic analysis. Primarily what I have taken from this experience is that at the end of the
committee, awards matter but what matters more is what you take from the conference. I am
extremely grateful to Chairperson ma’am for providing us with such an enriching platform, which
not only empowers delegates from 5th to 11th grade, but also turns the Executive board
members into leaders.

A message from
HRIDYANSH YADAV
CHAIRPERSON, UNGA

Model UN conferences have always been a great learning experience, and I have always taken
away something or the other, both as a delegate and as a member of the Executive Board. I would
like to thank Our respected Chairperson Ma’am and our Respected Principal Ma'am for ensuring
that these conferences are conducted annually so that students of all age groups can develop
critical thinking, situational analysis, and leadership, among countless other abilities. MUNs have
helped shape me as a person and have eventually made me a more inquisitive and sociable
person.

A message from
ADITYA HINOGRANI
CHAIRPERSON, UNSC

From participating in ISMUN five years ago in 8th grade to serving as the Director General of the
conference in my final year in this school, my MUN journey has been a Rollercoaster ride. ISMUN
& JAMUN characterize the three aspects which are key to an Amity education: Curiosity, Passion &
Intellect. Speech & Debate have always formed a key part of my identity as a person. I will remain
eternally grateful to our honorable Chairperson ma'am along with our Principal ma'am for
granting us the opportunity to develop holistically as individuals by discovering our true
capabilities.
Words from the USG International Press & the Editor
in-Chief

YASHWINI SETH &

SYED SULTAN SHAH
After two years of pairing blazers with boxers and craving the customary chits, it has been a
matter of great pride as we conduct ISMUN 2022 offline with the same excitement we did
before. MUNs have been in the limelight for the past years that made it the talk of the town
because of our opinionated delegates, concentrated executive board members, and silent
observers- the press. This year’s committees and delegation being as unique as the previous
ones, were nothing less than binge-worthy. Ranging from the eminent United Nations General
Assembly (UNGA) to the non-generic Indian Premier League (IPL) committee, were attended by
the delegates accompanied by their exclusive shrills that were recorded by the international
press, which were alert and invested in the event. International Press captured the mechanism
of MUNs along with its sarcastic and snort-worthy moments. It is astonishing how a few words
on paper, soft brush strokes, a clean lens, and right sized-pixels can seize a moment this well.
Though the pandemic may have left an impact on our daily lives, this year brings with it new
opportunities and challenges. Therefore, this is our humble yet earnest attempt at presenting
you with a panoramic view of this conference.
Heading International Press as the Chairperson & Editor-In-Chief, has been one of the most
incredible tasks, not only cause of the fun, but getting to know such talented press members
who highly influenced us. We have been expressive when it comes to sharing our thoughts
and ideas on paper, and being a part of the International Press complimented us in the best
way possible. We hope the sagas and the learnings that we shared with our press help them
express themselves brilliantly in our newsletter and the future as well. We also wish to make
our audience feel the presence of all the parts of an MUN- the convincing, negotiating, laughs,
brainstorming and how can we forget- the decorum :)
We would further take this opportunity to thank everyone who contributed to this Newsletter,
without their efforts we wouldn’t have been able to achieve what we’ve achieved. I hope that
this Newsletter gives you an insight into different global issues discussed at ISMUN 2022 and
you’ll be able to take back something valuable or learn something new. ENJOY :)
UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY
RUSSIAN RUCKUS RISSOTTO
JASMEH PAHWA

Ingredients:
1. 6 tablespoons of Enthusiasm
2. 4 tablespoons of Strong opinions
3. 2 tablespoons of Heat
4. 2.5 tablespoons of Voting
5. 5 tablespoons of Participation
6. 3.5 tablespoons of Research work
7. 2 tablespoons of Debate
8. Half a cup of Clear stance
9. 0.25 tablespoons of noteworthy chits
Procedure:
1. The committee began with plentiful countries
willing to give a GSL enthusiastically.
They shared facts and their opinions supporting
their allies the aroma of which filled the
UNGA kitchen. Cartoon by Akshita Bhandari 10-B

3. The voting which was the most scrumptious element consisted of delegates raising
motions. After the motions failing many times, finally the motion ‘Economic impact of
Russian Invasion on Ukraine’ for the moderated caucus was passed and the flame slowed.
This was a much-discussed motion where delegates gave speeches deliberating on how
Russia has made a big blunder by invading Ukraine and not only ruining Ukraine’s
economy, but also of some blameless countries and that of itself. It seemed like the rice
were a little overcooked!
4. The quality of chits and flavor signified the hard work put in by the delegates in research.
5. The pepper of eagerness to take stance was then mixed in.
6. The EB seemed to be awestruck by the richness and creaminess of chits, spice of
contribution and enthusiasm, flawlessly roasted research work which was evidently
noteworthy in speeches and the responsiveness of delegates.
Spice factor: 3.5/5
Chef’s tip: The committee could have been more seasoned with flakes of discussion and a pinch
of more analysis of the issue by the delegates.

A RECIPE FOR A SPICY DEBATE
NAMYA JAIN

Ingredients:
-½ cup of research
-2 tablespoons of debate
-½ tablespoon of jokes
-1 teaspoon of decorum
-2 teaspoons of advice
-1 tablespoon of lobbying
-¼ cup of spicy fried chits

Method: Cartoon by Trisha Biswas 9-C

Take a large group of delegates and provide them with an interesting debatable agenda. Let
the room sit and allow to simmer for a few minutes. Next, add in a sprinkle excitement by
opening the floor for motions. Let the delegates mix well before increasing the heat and
allowing sugar and salt to both balance and try to outshine the other. Give the delegates a
break and take them out of the simmering pot. After letting them cool for a few minutes, put
them into the oven at a low heat for 2-3 hours. Let the delegates scramble for research, and
bake thoroughly with well-balanced arguments, intelligent lobbying and a dash of humour.
Take the debate out of the heat and allow delegates to cool down. Finally, top your dish with
freshly fried spicy chits and your delectable debate is ready to serve!

How can the lessons from the Russia Ukraine war be
implemented to resolve the conflictin the South China Sea.
SHAMBHAVI SHARMA

On the 24th of February 2022, the Russian Federation instigated war on Ukraine due to
surging tensions caused by several reasons. Ukraine provides Washington direct passage into
Moscow and has wanted to join NATO where the United States, a common enemy of Russia
resides. This has not gone well with Russia. Putin, the president of the Russian Federation
considers this as tragic as both countries shared a single “historic and spiritual space.”
According to the Republic of China, this war has diverted the constant attention on the PRC
expansion towards the war. According to their opinions discussed in the committee, they
believe that “the government tends to take advantage of the attention diversion to make
unethical decisions.” On the other hand, the representatives of Pakistan have clearly stated
that “the United states have forced Pakistan to take sides” and that it will “not affect any
relations between the People’s Republic of China, and them.” Following the statements of
Hong-Kong, they believe that the only lesson learnt from the Ukraine-Russia war is that “a
powerful country can do anything to dominate a smaller one.” They continue to say that “the
PRC would follow in their footsteps,” even though it seems too unlikely to occur. They have
also said that they “encourage common ground of diplomacy and peace.”
The opinions of different countries have contrasted in ways to an unexplainable extent. An
efficacious resolution is yet to be found, and we can only hope that it will be soon.

ALL INDIA POLITICAL PARTIES MEET
REVDI CULTURE
AVIKA GUPTA

Revdi, typically a traditional sweet made of jaggery and sesame, is now used as a medium to
gain votes. This system is known as revdi culture. During a one-on-one discussion between
the parties, the topic above was addressed. The issue came into view when Congress claimed
BJP made false promises and never fulfilled them.

BJP had alleged that the government would

increase spending on education to 6% of
GDP, a commitment they failed to keep. The
above point was mentioned by Manish
Sisodiya of the Congress and gained quite a
few agreements.
In defence of the statement above, BJP
members quoted that "At least we don't go
around giving revdi for free." An
acknowledgment to both the revdi culture
and how Congress is giving free
education(education here being referenced
as revdi).
Cartoon by Trisha Biswas 9-C

Further mentioning that because of free education India's economy is slowly decreasing,
BJP made a solid point. Counter attacking BJP, Congress stated that they have reduced spending
on the education system. The one-on-one discussion soon turned into a messy debate which
surprised even the EB. Later on, when references to Ramayana were made by BJP, Rahul Gandhi
of Congress stated that "Ram is a myth".Further going on Amit Shah made a controversial
statement saying"When a Hindu dies no one comes together, but when a Muslim dies, the
whole community comes together. As the committee came to an end, you could still hear
bickerings on Revdi.
INDIAN PREMIER LEAGUE
No time for cheap tricks, the watch
shows the time for hat-tricks!
With the onset of monsoon, the IPL (Indian Premiere League) 2023 Auctions have
commenced. IPL is a national variation of the sport, ‘Cricket’ which is a bat and ball game in
which two teams of eleven take turns to score runs using a bat, while the other team prevents
them from scoring. In IPL, players from all around the world compete as part of an Indian
Cricket team.
To decide the players for each team, the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) holds
an annual two day ceremony called an ‘Auction’, in which the captains of all teams auction
their money to buy certain players.
All the interested players are categorised in three lists; Batters, Bowlers and All Rounders.
The Auctioneer can list any name from the three lists in any order. Batters are people who
professionalise in the Batting aspect of cricket. Bowlers are people who have expertise in
throwing the ball towards the batsmen. All Rounders are people who specialise in both
batting and bowling, but can also make do of other crucial roles such as being a Wicket
Keeper.
Each team captain also has two retained players, which are players that have a permanent
place on their respective team, meaning that they cannot be auctioned in any way. The
retained players also help the captain make decisions. The team captains also possess an
RTM, which gives them the Right To Match a bid of an opposing team to purloin a player
they would want. Each team can only have 1 RTM for each Auction.
There is also an unspoken rule of Backdoor Negotiations, which state that you are allowed to
trade players from team to team for another player and/or a sum from your budget.
The IPL 2023 Auctions Day 1 was performed on
18 July, 2022. The Auction ceremony
initiated with informing all team captains of
their budget, which was 50 Crore INR for all the
teams. There were 60 people interested in being
auctioned— 27 Batters, 18 Bowlers and 15
All Rounders.
This IPL contains seven teams which are:-

UNITED NATIONS COMMISSION ON STATUS OF
WOMEN
Women’s Status in Politics
“Women don’t need to find a voice, they have a voice, and they need to feel empowered to use it,
and people need to be encouraged to listen.”, is rightfully quoted by Meghan Markle. Across the
globe, many women are struggling to get into politics and represent their interests. Their entry is,
in many places, restricted because of one sole parameter: gender. Women are being
discriminated because of the orthodox thinking that a woman’s role is only limited to the duties
of the household. Many parents in rural areas forbid their daughters from going to school and
getting educated. This leads to a lesser number of educated women causing an even lesser
number of those who are politically active citizens.
It’s true that women’s interests can be represented in the parliament only when women can get
elected to the parliament. “No other policy is as likely to raise economic productivity or to
reduce child and maternal mortality. No other policy is as sure to improve nutrition and promote
health, including the prevention of HIV/AIDS. No other policy is as powerful in increasing the
chances of education for the next generation.”, quoted Kofi Anan. Further, as Madeleine
Albright has stated, the world is wasting a precious resource in the dramatic underrepresentation
of women in leadership positions, often resulting in the exclusion of women’s talents and skills
in political life. Looking at women participating in politics, other women and girls also get
inspired to stand up for their rights and voice their opinions.
Total global representation is still well below the 30 percent benchmark often identified as the
necessary level of representation to achieve a “critical mass” – a considerable minority of all
legislators with significant impact, rather than a token few individuals – not to mention falling
short of women’s representation as half of the world’s population. Thus, encouraging women to
join politics is not only a necessity but also a fundamental duty of the government. After all
women make about half of the population. There are many ways of increasing women’s
participation in politics such as launching schemes to make education more accessible to girls.
Educated women are likely to participate in politics. A few years ago, the Mexican government
approved a political reform package that includes new measures which ensure the greater
participation of women in politics. The law now requires gender equality which means that at
least 50% of the candidates fielded by a political party must be female. So, measures like these
are being taken up in different countries increasing the participation of women in politics.
There are several instances of success in these efforts such as the political representation of
women in Rwanda is now 61.25%. We must celebrate these instances of joy but also must pay
attention to the alarming situations of women worldwide.
And that
