In the small clip of the TV Drama Monarch of the Glen we are presented with the representational issues of age,

each age group is divided up in this clip. In the clip, it focuses more on the youth which is denoted by a character called Amy, a 16 year old teenager. I will describe the technical construction, camera angles, background score and the location of the clip. The older generation is defined much clearly through the characters of the head teacher, the middle aged character are represented by the character; Paul and the other workers. In the first scene, it shows all the middle aged people who are working in the land, showing they work. The setting of the clip is a rural setting. The outside setting proves that Amy is around other ages who work whereas she has no one her age around which shows the ages divided as a representable issue. The work done by the middle aged characters is another representable issues of age, as they are still working. The miseen-scene of the outside setting is the trees, logs, the thick clothing, cars/jeeps depicts the countryside. Amy is first introduced to the audience in the scene, as she comes out wearing a bright yellow top with a patterned image on the front with a pair of baggy jeans on. As we are introduced to Amy, we also see the type of girl she is which also makes us think about her age; she goes for that casual look for teenagers. Amy is a teenager who doesnt attend school and hasnt sat any exams furthermore we find out about Amys real age halfway through the clip when she crashes the car with her head teachers car. As a 16 year old, your stereotypically and expected to be at school, sitting your GCSEs however as Amy never told Paul or anyone else it leads to an argument between them both which is stereotypical of the argument to end in with a I hate you by Amy.

She is childish, relentless, and foolish due to many of the things she has done. Firstly, the scene of where she is in the Land Rover and talking to herself to go through whether she has done each part of starting a car right. The use of the car has a traditional notion of a teenager driving with a small car as their first car however for Amy its different which suggests that Amy has no place in the environment she stays in. The facial expression she has on her face is a surprised look, as she had this self-satisfied feeling of turning on the car right. The next scene is where we learn about Amys real age. Her body language is completely different from other scenes. The representable issues of age in this scene are that Amy is shown as an innocent girl who is stereotypically needs to back up by adults. This divides the age up one again. Her facial expressions clearly show that she is upset and worried in which she seeks for comfort from others which makes the audience recognises her weakness. Next, the scene where Paul and the head teacher are together shows the matureness of their age in contrast to Amys age. Paul offereing alcohol to the head teacher shows the different between their age and the age of Amy. The head teacher describes Amy as she has vivid imagination. This conveys the division between two completely different age ranges. The background score has a cheerful tone which also sets the scene. The scene where Amy runs away into her room after the argument, we are introduced to a new location. Amys bedroom. In her room there are gossip female magazines, the colour pink and red around the room, photographs which all are the mise-en-scene of a teenage girls room. This scene represents the age of a teenager being sad and running away

which conveys the stereotypical stunt which teenagers do when they are in an argument. During the scene where there are many camera shots of close up and panning around the room to show the key features of a teenage girls room, Amy leaves a teddy bear and clothing for young kids, which also represents that Amy doesnt fit in the environment as she is surrounded by not only middle aged people but young kids. There is no dialect what so ever only a background score which is emotional, which emphasis the setting once again. The camera close ups are a big role into the representation of age. During the argument between Paul and Amy there is a low angle show which signifies that Paul is taller however it connotes the power of age in contrast to Amy, it emphasises how small Amy is, connotation the power of her age compared to Pauls age. This is an issue of age in which is represented by the differences and over power. Overall, through the use of mise-en-scene, camera, location sets, speech and facial/body expressions we are presented with a sequence which is focused on one character, Amy. The clip highlights on how the representation of youth is depict and how it can be misunderstood which is perfectly demonstrated in this clip. In addition, the opposite of youth is the elder generation, it also depicts on how adults thinks and residing in a society of youth and how its represented.
