DEFINITION:
An adjective is a word that modifies/changes
the meaning of nouns or pronouns.
It answers these questions about nouns
! Which one?
! What kind?
! How many?

Etymology: ad (toward) + ject (throw)
1. An adjective is a modifier.
Only modifiers can take the
word very in front of them.
For example:
! very blue
! very vibrant
! very good
2. If you have a word and you want to
test whether or not its an adjective,
ask the question: _________ what?
For example:
! The dog ran through the small puddle.
" Small what? The answer is puddle. Puddle is a
noun. Words that modify nouns are adjectives. Small
is an adjective.
! The bug crawled over the frayed carpet.
" Bug what? The question doesnt make sense. If the
answer is bug crawled, it sounds like an incomplete
noun phrase, unlike small puddle. Bug is not an
adjective; also, we cant say very bug.
Practicing identification
! The first painter I learned about in
school was John William Waterhouse.
! The canvas was filled with smeared and
splattered paint.
! The intelligent student quickly
completed her homework.
