1 Introduction
About this manual
The purpose of this manual is to welcome you to the world of Soundscape and help you get started with your new equipment. It is by no means the unique resource for Soundscape product information. Product-specific user manuals are provided for the Soundscape range, and a wealth of knowledge is available from the Sydec Audio Engineering website. This manual is intended to cover aspects that are not specific to a particular piece of equipment, such as, non exhaustively: the structure of the Soundscape range and how different pieces of equipment can be interconnected, finding your way around the website, configuring the host PC for Soundscape PCI cards or how to obtain technical support.

Reading conventions
Menus Where appropriate, to indicate a path under a menu of the Soundscape Editor or Soundscape Mixer software, the following format will be used: menu: Header|Submenu 1|Submenu 2|Submenu3|Item. Screenshots The appearance of the Soundscape software or Sydec webpages on your computer screen may be different from the screenshots in this manual. This could be because you are using a different version of Windows, because you are using different Windows settings, or because many aspects of the Soundscape software can be customized to suit individual preferences. The website design may also be revamped from time to time.

Disclaimer
This manual has been written with great care and attention to detail. However, it is not a contractual document. Sydec Audio Engineering and/or the writer(s) of this manual cannot be held responsible for any loss or damage arising directly or indirectly from any error or omission in this manual.

5 Hardware Installation Overview

This chapter presents an overview of the hardware installation procedure for the main Soundscape hardware components. We understand that some users want to get up and running quickly and will start installing cards in their computer before downloading reading the main manuals. However, we strongly advise you to read the main manuals as soon as possible. They contain far more information than could be included in this "Getting Started" manual. The installation overviews below provide only an outline the hardware and software installation procedures. NOTE: As a safety precaution, please switch off all equipment while making electrical connections.

Soundscape 32
Installing a Soundscape 32 requires: - Installing at least one IDE hard disk in the Soundscape 32. Up to four hard disks can be installed, but only one is required to have full functionality. The simplest and quickest way to configure a hard disk for use by Soundscape is to put it in Cable Select mode and insert it in one of the removable caddies. - Installing the PCI Host Interface card in the host PC (or installing the optional EPP Host Interface cable). - If a Mixpander is going to be used, installing it in the host PC. - Connecting the the Soundscape 32's "To Host" connector to the PCI Host Interface card (or EPP Host Interface cable) and the Soundscape 32's Expansion Bus port to the Mixpander (if present) using the cables provided. - Connecting the Soundscape 32's audio inputs and outputs to your system as required. - Connecting the Soundscape 32 and host computer to the mains. - Starting up the Soundscape 32 unit and the host computer. - Installing the Soundscape Device Driver for the PCI Host Interface card (or EPP Host Interface cable) and for the Mixpander if present. - Installing the Soundscape Editor software on the host computer. - Installing any plug-ins or plug-in demos you may have on the host computer. Once these steps have been completed, you will be able to start the Soundscape Editor software, enter the Editor, Mixer and plug-in passwords as necessary and start to work. One of the first things you will need to do is to set up a suitable
Chapter 5-1

Getting Started With Soundscape WordClock configuration between your Soundscape system and any other digital equipment connected to it. NOTE: You will be prompted to install the Soundscape WDM driver when you start the Soundscape Editor software for the first time. The above is a summary of the installation procedure. You may be able to get started by following these steps if you are familiar with computers and audio equipment. However, we strongly recommend that you read the Soundscape Editor manual before you begin the installation. It provides far more information than could be included here, including handling the cards, using multiple units, clock synchronization etc. Please note that the shortcut you click to start the Soundscape Editor references an initialization (.ini) file where your personal settings are stored. If you create new shortcuts, they need to reference this initialization file. You can also create multiple shortcuts referencing different initialization files to run different configurations (for instance, if the system is used by several users at different times). Please see the Soundscape Editor manual for details about the initialization file. You can also read the "Soundscape Device Driver And PCI Cards" chapter of this manual, which is applicable to the PCI Host Interface Card and Mixpander, and the "EPP Host Interface Cable" chapter if you want to use the optional EPP Interface cable.

Soundscape PCI audio cards

Installing a Soundscape PCI audio card requires: - Inserting the card in a PCI slot of the host PC. - Connecting the card to your audio equipment or to a Soundscape audio interface. In the case of a Mixpander Power Pak, the Mixpander PCI audio card needs to be connected to a compatible Soundscape iBox model via its Expansion Bus port. - Starting up the host computer and installing the Soundscape Device Driver. - Installing the Soundscape Mixer software on the host computer. - Installing any plug-ins or plug-in demos you may have on the host computer. Once these steps have been completed, you will be able to start the Soundscape Mixer software, enter the Soundscape Mixer and plug-in passwords as necessary and start to work. One of the first things you will need to do is to set up a suitable WordClock configuration between your Soundscape audio card and any other digital equipment connected to it.

Chapter 5-2

Getting Started With Soundscape NOTE: You will be prompted to install the Soundscape WDM driver when you start the Soundscape Mixer software for the first time. The above is a summary of the installation procedure. You may be able to get started by following these steps if you are familiar with computers and audio equipment. However, we strongly recommend that you read the Soundscape Mixer manual before you begin the installation. It provides far more information than could be included here, including installing multiple cards, clock synchronization etc. You can also read the "Soundscape Device Driver And PCI Cards" chapter of this manual, which is applicable to all Soundscape PCI audio cards.

Soundscape audio interfaces

In most cases, in order to use a Soundscape audio interface, you will simply need to connect it to your audio equipment and to the mains, and to press the power button. It can be controlled entirely from its front panel. However, when an iBox is connected to a Mixpander in a Mixpander Power Pak configuration, it will respond to settings made in the Soundscape Mixer software. In the case of the iBox 8-Line, an 8-way DIL switch may need to be set for certain clock synchronization configurations. Please refer to the manuals available from the Downloads section of the Sydec Audio Engineering website for details.

6 Soundscape Device Driver and PCI cards

Soundscape Device Driver Overview
The terms "Soundscape Driver" designate a group of driver files that the Soundscape software (Soundscape Editor or Soundscape Mixer) uses to communicate with Soundscape hardware devices. It also handles communication between Windows applications (e.g. a MIDI+Audio sequencer) and Soundscape PCI audio cards. The same Soundscape Driver is needed for: - The PCI Host Interface card (used to connect Soundscape 32 and compatible DAWs to the host PC). - The optional EPP Host Interface cable (used to connect Soundscape 32 and compatible DAWs to the host PC). - All the Soundscape PCI audio cards: Mixpander (when used with a Soundscape 32 or as part of a Mixpander Power Pak), Mixtreme 192 or Madixtreme.

Downloading the Soundscape Device Driver

The Soundscape Driver is included in the Soundscape Editor and Soundscape Mixer installation files, available from the Support section of the Sydec Audio Engineering website. The Soundscape Editor and Soundscape Mixer installation files are downloaded in a compressed format. After decompression, the files are presented in multiple folders (Disk 1, Disk 2, etc.) When installing the Soundscape Device Driver, please direct Windows to the Disk 1 folder. Windows needs to read the ssdev.inf file during initial driver installation, and in some cases the sswdm.inf file later on when the Soundscape Editor or Soundscape Mixer is started for the first time (for PCI audio cards only). Both files are located in the Disk 1 folder. The latest version of the driver can also be downloaded separately. This may be useful if, for instance, a new driver version is included with a new version of the Soundscape Mixer, but you want to use it with the Soundscape Editor.

Chapter 6-1

Getting Started With Soundscape

Uninstalling the Soundscape Device Driver

Should you ever need to uninstall the Soundscape Driver, this can be done via the Windows Control Panel|Add or Remove Programs|Soundscape Driver (remove only).

Soundscape PCI cards overview

The Soundscape PCI cards can be divided in two categories: - The first category comprises of only the PCI Host Interface card (used to connect a Soundscape 32 or compatible DAW to the host PC). - The second category covers the entire range of Soundscape audio cards: Mixpander/5, Mixpander/9, Mixtreme 192 and Madixtreme. The PCI Host Interface card is supplied with the Soundscape 32 digital audio workstation and is strictly used to control that workstation from the Soundscape Editor software running on the host PC, and to exchange files between the DAW and the host PC. The Soundscape audio cards on the other hand, are equipped with at least one and up to nine DSPs. The Mixpander/9 or Mixpxander/5 can be used as a coprocessor for a Soundscape DAW, to which it connects via a proprietary Soundscape Expansion Bus port, or as part of a Mixpander Power Pak when connected to a suitable iBox via the Expansion Bus port. The Mixpander Power Pak, Mixtreme 192 and Madixtreme are controlled via the Soundscape Mixer software installed on the host PC. The same driver is used for both categories of cards. However, the audio cards have different requirements, since they can also be accessed by third party audio applications (e.g. audio sequencers). As a consequence, while the initial
Chapter 6-2

Getting Started With Soundscape installion procedure is similar for all Soundscape PCI cards, an extra step is necessary for the audio cards: installing the WDM driver. You will be prompted for this the first time the Soundscape Editor or Soundscape Mixer is started after a new Soundscape PCI card has been installed.

Installing the Soundscape Device Driver and PCI cards

Installing a Soundscape PCI card is done in two phases: - Physical installation of the card into the host PC. - Soundscape Device Driver installation. Physical installation Physical installation involves opening up the PC case and locating a suitable PCI slot for the card. Any slot is normally suitable for the smaller cards. For full length cards (Mixpander/9 and Mixpander/5), certain slots may not be suitable due to motherboard components restricting the space available for the card behind the PCI slot. Push the gold contacts on the edge of the card into the chosen slot until the card is securely in place and secure the card's backplate to the computer case using a screw (normally provided with the computer: the screw may have been used to secure a blanking plate while the PCI slot was unused). Please make sure the PC is disconnected from the mains before physical installation of a PCI card, and observe static precautions when handling PCI cards or touching the PC motherboard. If possible, wear an anti-static wristband during the procedure. If you are familiar with the PCI card installation procedure, this may already be more information than you need. If on the other hand you need a more detailed, step by step description, you will find it in the Soundscape Editor manual or Soundscape Mixer manual. Soundscape Device Driver installation This is a standardized procedure under Windows. All current Soundscape PCI cards are "plug'n'play" compatible. Therefore, if you are familiar with the plug'n'play installation procedure, you can bypass the rest of this section and just proceed as usual. With plug'n'play, as soon as the PC is started after a compatible card has been physically installed, the card is detected. Windows will then display prompts to guide you through driver installation. Essentially, Windows needs to be directed to the "ssdev.inf" file. This file is located in the "Disk 1" folder of the Soundscape Editor and Soundscape Mixer installation files, available from the Downloads section of the Sydec Audio Engineering website. For Soundscape audio cards only, Windows will also prompt you to install the WDM driver files the first time that the Soundscape Editor or Soundscape Mixer
Chapter 6-3

Getting Started With Soundscape software is started after a compatible Soundscape audio card has been installed. The procedure is similar. This time, Windows need to read the "sswdm.inf" file. Just like the ssdev.inf file, the sswdm file is located in the "Disk 1" folder of the Soundscape Editor and Soundscape Mixer installation files. If needed, you will find a detailed step by step description of the driver installation procedure, including screenshots, in the Soundscape Editor manual or Soundscape Mixer manual.

PC configuration for Soundscape PCI audio cards

In most cases there is no need for any special tweak to your PC configuration for Soundscape PCI audio cards to operate effectively. However, if you encounter problems, please consider the information in this section. The Soundscape PCI audio cards use Motorola Farmchips for their PCI to DSP interface. They rely on a fully compliant PCI implementation with little or no tolerance for abnormal PCI implementations. This makes the Soundscape platform more efficient than others, since the "native" PCI Burst Speed can be used for an Interrupt (PCI Latency Timer set to 64), whereas other cards may use different values like for instance 255, making them more tolerant but also making it difficult for other devices to get CPU attention. Generally speaking, if you are specifying a PC for Soundscape, we recommend NForce chipsets for AMD processors and Intel chipsets for Intel processors. VIA and SIS chipsets are best avoided, whatever your choice of processor. Recommended BIOS settings
Parameter PCI Latency Timer * Spread Spectrum Clock System Speed and Overclocking (Turbo Mode) Onboard Audio/Gameport/MIDI Unused onboard devices (e.g. Serial Port/Com, LPT Printer, FW, USB) Recommended setting 64 Disable Disable or Standard Disable Disable

* If your BIOS does not allow you to set the PCI Latency value, you may use the "PCI Latency Tool" available from http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=951

Chapter 6-4

Getting Started With Soundscape IRQ assignment Soundscape PCI audio cards require an IRQ number to operate (this is not the case for the PCI Host Interface card). They may share an IRQ with another device, provided that the other device is also fully capable of sharing an IRQ. Multiple Soundscape PCI audio cards may share the same IRQ. On systems that use hyperthreading there is no way to assign physical IRQs to chosen PCI slots. In ACPI mode (which is a must when using hyperthreading or dual CPU systems), the BIOS and Windows manage all PCI devices through the PCI Interrupt Handler on IRQ 9, and only allow IRQs higher than 15 for PCI devices, regardless of settings made in the BIOS. Common symptoms of unsuccessful IRQ sharing may include any of the following: - Low latency values are not possible without clicks in the audio. - Communication error messages from the Soundscape driver/application. - PC crashes or freezes. - CPU Load Spikes - Bad system performance with e.g. slow graphics or slow response, even with a low system load.

Chapter 6-6

7 EPP Host Interface Cable

The optional EPP Host Interface cable can be used to connect a Soundscape 32 to a host PC via an EPP compatible parallel port, replacing the PCI Host Interface card. This is primarily intended to allow connection to laptop computers, which do not have PCI slots. For laptops that do not feature a parallel port, the EPP Host Interface cable can be used in conjunction with a PCMCIA/EPP adaptor. Some users have reported success with the SPP-100 from Quatech. At the time of writing the Quatech website address is: http://www.quatech.com/default.php Unlike the Soundscape PCI cards, the EPP Host Interface cable, by definition, is not plug'n'play compatible. It will therefore not be detected by Windows, and will need to be installed manually using the Add Hardware Wizard (Windows Control Panel|Add Hardware).

Chapter 7-1

Getting Started With Soundscape In order to install the driver for the EPP Host Interface cable, Windows will need to be directed to the "ssdev.inf" file located in the "Disk 1" folder of the Soundscape Editor installation files. If needed, you will find a detailed step by step description of the driver installation procedure, including screenshots, in the Soundscape Editor manual. The Soundscape Editor manual also includes a section about configuring the PC for use with the EPP Host Interface cable.

One of the first things you will need to do after starting the Soundscape Editor or Soundscape Mixer software for the first time is to enter passwords to enable the application and any optional plug-ins you have installed. You also need to provide a serial number when purchasing a plug-in or software upgrade for a particular hardware unit. This chapter is based on a TechNote called "Everything you need to know about passwords", which is available online in the Support section of our website.

The basics
The Soundscape Editor and Soundscape Mixer applications and Soundscape format plug-ins are protected against piracy by a password system that relies on the DSPs embedded in the Soundscape hardware. In practice, each password is generated according to the DSP serial number of a particular Soundscape hardware unit. Consequently, a password will only enable a Soundscape application or Soundscape format plug-in if the Soundscape hardware unit with the corresponding DSP serial number is detected. NOTE: There is an exception to this: the Synchro Arts VocAlign plug-in. Please see the Authorizing Synchro Arts VocAlign webpage if you require more information specific to this plug-in.

Sharing passwords between hardware units

Even though each password is generated uniquely for a particular Soundscape hardware unit, the corresponding software module (application or plug-in) will be enabled for all the hardware units that are operated from the same instance of the Soundscape Editor or Soundscape Mixer software. For instance, if you connect two Soundscape 32 units to a host PC and use them together as a 64-track system, each plug-in purchased for either unit will be enabled for both units. However, if you choose to run these two units separately as two 32-track systems with two instances of the Soundscape Editor running at the same time, the plug-ins purchased for either unit can only be enabled for that particular unit. Or if you install a Mixtreme, a Mixtreme 192 and a Mixpander Power Pak in the same host computer and purchase a plug-in for only one of these cards, this plug-in will be enabled for all three cards because they will be controlled from a single instance of the Soundscape Mixer software (only a single instance of the Soundscape Mixer can run at any one time because it will automatically take control of all the cards on startup).

Checking existing passwords for a Soundscape hardware unit

If you register a Soundscape hardware unit, you can check the existing passwords for that unit in the Show Mixer Plug-in passwords page of the Sydec Audio Engineering website. The Product Registration page is located in the Support section of the Sydec Audio Engineering website.

Obtaining a new password

Since each password is generated specifically for a particular Soundscape hardware unit according to its DSP serial number, Sydec Audio Engineering needs to know the serial number of the hardware unit you are requesting a password for. Passwords that are provided for free of charge with a new hardware unit can normally be found in the accompanying documents or on a label on the unit itself. In order to obtain an optional password (e.g., for an optional third party plug-in), you will need to supply the relevant hardware unit serial number to Sydec Audio Engineering. This can be done conveniently in the Sydec Online Shop, via email or on the phone. The serial number of a Soundscape hardware unit can be read when the Soundscape application that controls it (Soundscape Editor or Soundscape Mixer) is running.

Chapter 8-2

Getting Started With Soundscape For a Soundscape digital audio workstation (e.g., Soundscape 32 or Soundscape 16) or a Mixpander connected to a Soundscape digital audio workstation, clicking menu: Help|About Soundscape Editor will open a window where the serial number of the hardware units currently used by the software will be displayed:

NOTE: This serial number is NOT the same as the chassis serial number which is indicated on the back of the hardware unit. The chassis serial number cannot be used to generate a password.

Chapter 8-3

Getting Started With Soundscape For a Soundscape Mixtreme, Mixtreme 192, Madixtreme or a Mixpander used as part of a Mixpander Power Pak, clicking menu: Help|About ssMixer will open a window where the the serial number of each card can be checked:

TIPS: In order to avoid the mistakes that can occur when reading or typing a serial number, you can highlight that serial number by clicking and dragging the mouse pointer over it, right-click it and use the Windows copy and paste commands (or the equivalent [Ctrl]+[C] and [Ctrl]+[V] key commands) to insert it in a document (e.g., in an email). If you have already registered a hardware unit, its serial number will be automatically available in the Sydec Online Shop. If you own several units, please make certain that you select the serial number of the unit you want to obtain a password for! If you have to type a serial number, please note that they contain leading zeroes followed by a string of letters from A to Z and some hexadecinal characters (i.e., numbers from 0 to 9 and letters from A to F). Please watch out for possible confusion between the letter o and zero or the letters i or L and the number 1. When typing a serial number the leading zeroes may be ignored.

Chapter 8-4

Entering passwords
Passwords must be entered in the Passwords window of the Soundscape Editor (menu: Options) or Soundscape Mixer (menu: Settings|Passwords). These windows are slightly different. In the Soundscape Editor, in order to enable a software module (application or plug-in) listed in the Option column, a password must be entered in the Password column for either the DAW unit listed in the Unit Serial # column or the Mixpander listed in the Mixpander Serial # column. If the password applies to a Mixpander, it must be prefixed with the letter M.

Chapter 8-5

Getting Started With Soundscape In the Soundscape Mixer software, the cards are listed in the Select Mixer unit box. Click the arrow to the right of that box to select a card. In order to enable a software module (application or plug-in) listed in the Option column, a password must be entered in the Password column for the unit that has been selected.

In both cases (Soundscape Editor and Soundscape Mixer), the password must be entered for the unit it has been generated for. The corresponding software module will automatically be enabled for all the units that are controlled from that instance of the Soundscape Editor or Soundscape Mixer. The password for that software module should remain set to the default 000000000000 for the other units. Just like for serial numbers, in order to avoid mistakes, it is advisable to copy and paste passwords rather than to type them. However, if you ever need to type a password, please note that passwords only contain hexadecimal characters, i.e., numbers from 0 to 9 and letters from A to F. For a plug-in to be listed in the Passwords window of the Soundscape Editor or Soundscape Mixer, it must first be installed on the host PC. Plug-ins that are not yet installed will not show. At the time of writing this article, passwords are required to enable: - The Soundscape Editor V4.xx or later or Soundscape Mixer V4.xx or later. - Soundscape format DSP-powered plug-ins. - Password-protected XPro plug-ins in the Soundscape Editor, such as Cedar Declick or the XPro Time Module. For Synchro Arts VocAlign, please check out the "Authorizing Synchro Arts VocAlign webpage. - The V2.xx Mixer.

Chapter 8-6

Getting Started With Soundscape NOTE: V2.xx Mixer refers to the current format of the Mixer regardless of the software version number and appears as Version 2.xx Mixer, Version 2.xx Mixer (Part B) and Version 2.xx Mixer (Part C) in the Editor, and may appear as Version 2.xx Mixer (VST Plug-Ins, Part A, Part B, Part C) in the Soundscape Mixer, depending on the use of VST plug-ins. The V2.xx Mixer password must also be used for the VST Plug-Ins option in the Soundscape Editor, and for demo versions of Soundscape format DSPpowered plug-ins. The V2.xx Mixer password is all that is required to enable legacy versions of the Soundscape Editor (up to V3.8) and Mixtreme (up to V1.4) software.

Passwords for Mixpander

Historically, the Mixpander was only available as an add-on for the Soundscape digital audio workstations (SSHDR1-Plus, R.Ed, Soundscape 32, Soundscape 16). Since the introduction of the Mixpander Power Pak, passwords can be generated for a Mixpander according to its own DSP serial number. This may be ideal if you wish to use a Mixpander with a Soundscape DAW and as part of a Mixpander Power Pak at different times. However, in this case please note that the plug-ins generated for that Mixpander can only be used in a single program at any single time. For instance, if you also own a Soundscape 32, these plug-ins will only be enabled for that Soundscape 32 when the Mixpander is connected to it. It may be preferable to purchase the passwords for the Soundscape 32, depending on the way you work.

9 Soundscape System Expansion

Overview
The Soundscape hardware product range is divided into three main categories (excluding accessories): - Digital audio workstations. - PCI audio cards - iBox audio interfaces Products from these three categories can be used independently. However, they can also be interconnected to create an even more flexible and/or powerful system.

Soundscape digital audio workstations

Soundscape digital audio workstations include the Soundscape 32 and compatible units (Soundscape 16, R.Ed, R.Ed/24, R.Ed16). These units connect to a host computer via a PCI interface card or, optionally, via an EPP Host Interface cable. Their function is to record and play back audio, and with the Soundscape Editor software, to provide an exceptionally fast and easy to use editing platform controlled from the host PC. Several units can be combined to create a larger system with a higher track count and more inputs and outputs. System expansion and connectivity for Soundscape digital audio workstations The simplest way to expand your Soundscape DAW system is to add other hardware units. For instance, you can combine up to four Soundscape 32 for a 128 track system. A Mixpander/9 or Mixpander/5 can be connected to the Expansion Bus port of the Soundscape 32. This will increase the mixing and processing power of the system exponentially, allowing you to use dozens of Soundscape format DSPpowered plug-ins simultaneously. The Mixpander streaming technology also allows VST/VSTi compatibility in the Soundscape environment (VST/VSTi plugins run on the processor of the host PC). With Version 5.0 or above of the Editor software and a Mixpander, you can also integrate "Native Soundscape Units" to your system, as long as the total number of units does not exceed four. Native units are essentially Soundscape formatted hard disks installed in the host PC that use the Mixpander streaming technology to record and play back "native tracks", in addition to the tracks provided by the hardware Soundscape unit(s) .

Chapter 9-1

Getting Started With Soundscape The Soundscape 32 digital audio workstation comes with 24 of its inputs and outputs on three TDIF connectors. If you need these inputs and outputs in a different format, the TDIF equipped Soundscape iBoxes make ideal converters. Several of them come with three TDIF connectors, just like the Soundscape 32: - iBox 48-TA (TDIF/analog and analog/TDIF conversion). - iBox 64-MADI-T (TDIF/MADI and MADI/TDIF conversion). - iBox 64-MADI-TA (TDIF/analog, analog/TDIF, TDIF/MADI and MADI/TDIF conversion). Other iBox models are available with one TDIF port. They can be connected to one of the Soundscape 32's TDIF ports: - iBox 2-Mic (two channels of TDIF/analogue and analogue/TDIF conversion with microphone preamps and headphone output). - iBox 2-Line (two channels of TDIF/analogue and analogue/TDIF conversion). - iBox 8-Line (eight channels of TDIF/analogue and analogue/TDIF conversion). - iBox 4-AES (four channels of TDIF/AES/EBU and AES/EBU/TDIF conversion). - I/O 896 (eight channels of TDIF/analog and analog/TDIF, TDIF/ADAT and ADAT/TDIF conversion with Apogee A/D and D/A conversion and "Soft Limit" function. - ADDA 2408-R (high-end 8-channel microphone preamplification unit jointly designed by Digital Audio Denmark and Sydec Audio Engineering. Software remote control and digitally controlled analog gain).

Soundscape PCI audio cards

Soundscape PCI audio cards include the Mixpander Power Pak (i.e., a Mixpander/9 or Mixpander/5 connected to an iBox with Soundscape Expansion Bus port), the Mixtreme 192 and the Madixtreme. These cards are controlled by the Soundscape Mixer software, a completely user configurable real-time virtual mixing console that runs on the DSP(s) of the card. The on-board DSP(s) are used to run Soundscape format effects and processing plug-ins. System expansion and connectivity for Soundscape Soundscape PCI audio cards Soundscape PCI audio card systems can grow according to your needs: the Soundscape Mixer software supports multiple cards, and you can combine several Mixpander Power Paks, Mixtreme 192s or Madixtremes in any way you need. From 16 simultaneous inputs and outputs with one DSP for the Mixtreme
Chapter 9-2

Getting Started With Soundscape 192 to 64 simultaneous inputs and outputs with nine DSP for a single Mixpander Power Pak /9, and with multiple card support, you will never run out of inputs, outputs or DSP-based mixing power. Soundscape PCI audio cards can also be used in combination with Soundscape iBox audio interfaces. The Mixpander/9 and Mixpander/5 must be connected to the Expansion Bus port of an iBox to form the Mixpander Power Pak. iBoxes that feature an Expansion Bus port include the iBox 48-TA, iBox 64-MADI-T, iBox 64MADI-TA, iBox 48-AA, iBox 64-MADI-A, iBox 64-MADI-AA, iBox 48-SA, iBox 64MADI-S, iBox 64-MADI-SA and iBox 24-S. The Mixtreme 192 features two TDIF ports that can be used to connect any combination of two eight-channel (or less) TDIF compatible iBoxes (iBox 8-MPA, iBox 2-Mic, iBox 8-Line, iBox 2-Line, iBox 4-AES, I/O 896, ADDA 2408-R). The card's two TDIF ports can also be connected to two of the three ports available on the iBox 48-TA, iBox 64-MADI-T and iBox 64-MADI-TA. The Madixtreme can be connected to the iBox 64-MADI-T, iBox 64-MADI-TA, iBox 64-MADI-A, iBox 64-MADI-AA, iBox 64-MADI-S or iBox 64-MADI-SA via MADI.

Soundscape iBox audio interfaces

Soundscape iBox audio interfaces include the iBox 48-TA, iBox 64-MADI-T, iBox 64-MADI-TA, iBox 48-AA, iBox 64-MADI-A, iBox 64-MADI-AA, iBox 48-SA, iBox 64-MADI-S, iBox 64-MADI-SA, iBox 24-S, iBox 8-MPA, iBox 2-Mic, iBox 8-Line, iBox 2-Line, iBox 4-AES, I/O 896 and ADDA 2408-R. All iBox models are fully controllable from their front panel and can therefore be used as standalone audio format converters. System expansion and connectivity for Soundscape iBox audio interfaces iBoxes that feature a Soundscape Expansion Bus port can be connected to a Mixpander/9 or Mixpander/5 PCI audio card to form a Mixpander Power Pak. The iBoxes that feature an Expansion Bus port are the iBox 48-TA, iBox 64-MADI-T, iBox 64-MADI-TA, iBox 48-AA, iBox 64-MADI-A, iBox 64-MADI-AA, iBox 48-SA, iBox 64-MADI-S, iBox 64-MADI-SA and iBox 24-S. The iBoxes that feature a TDIF port can be connected to a Mixtreme 192 for format conversion. In fact, the iBoxes that feature three TDIF ports can be connected to two Mixtreme 192 cards. These iBoxes are also compatible with the Soundscape 32. TDIF-equipped iBoxes include the iBox 48-TA, iBox 64-MADI-T, iBox 64-MADI-TA, iBox 2-Mic, iBox 8-Line, iBox 2-Line, iBox 4-AES, I/O 896 and ADDA 2408-R. The iBoxes that feature a MADI port can be connected to a Madixtreme for format conversion. MADI-equipped iBoxes include the 64-MADI-T, iBox 64MADI-TA, iBox 64-MADI-A, iBox 64-MADI-AA, iBox 64-MADI-S or iBox 64-MADISA via MADI.

Chapter 9-3

Getting Started With Soundscape The iBox models that feature two or four channels of audio format conversion to/from TDIF can be cascaded in order to make use of all eight channels of the TDIF port they are connected to. These models are the iBox 2-Mic, iBox 2-Mic and iBox 4-AES. More information about cascading units is provide in an article titled "Soundscape audio interfaces: extensive connectivity". Please click the "Soundscape applications" item in the submenu of the "Users and Applications" link of our website to find this article. The iBox 8-MPA is the ideal companion for an iBox 64-MADI-TA, iBox 48-TA, iBox 64-MADI-SA, iBox 48-SA, iBox 64-MADI-AA or iBox 48-AA in situations where multiple high-quality microphone preamps are required. It can be connected to these iBoxes via the sub-D connectors using a single multicore cable, while the main iBox is connected to a Mixpander via its Expansion Bus connector (Mixpander Power Pak), to a Mixtreme, Mixtreme 192, Soundscape 32 or compatible DAW via TDIF, to a Madixtreme via MADI or to any other compatible device. If you are using a Mixpander Power Pak, you can also combine a single Mixpander with two iBoxes to suit your format requirements. For instance, if your Mixpander Power Pak includes a Mixpander with an iBox 48-TA, you can connect a second iBox 48-TA to the first one via TDIF. This way you get 48 analog inputs and outputs, instead of 24 TDIF and 24 analog inputs and outputs.

10 Technical Support
If you encounter a technical difficulty with your Soundscape equipment, or if you have a question regarding Soundscape or the way it interacts with other equipment, help is always at hand! Many questions are answered in the Soundscape manuals. Reading the relevant manual for a given piece of equipment or software application will often clarify points that may appear to be problematic. For instance, most technical support questions we receive about mixer and plug-in passwords are answered in the Soundscape Editor and Soundscape Mixer manuals. The "Soundscape Knowledge Base" provides answers to frequently asked questions (FAQs) and a number of "Technotes" dealing with particular technical issues. Click "Knowledge Base" in the submenu of the "Support" link of our website to access it. Some technical matters are discussed in the "Soundscape Applications" section of our website. Click "Soundscape applications" in the submenu of the "Users and Applications" link of our website to access it. The Soundscape user forum is the best resource when it comes to questions regarding Soundscape used with other equipment. Most Soundscape users are working professionals who use our products on a daily basis and in connection with a wide range of other devices. Whatever digital mixing console you connect to your Soundscape 32 or Mixtreme 192, whatever DTRS you need to synchronize to your Soundscape system, there is a good chance that another user has used the same configuration. And many forum members are betatesters as well as Soundscape users. Last but not least, we are here to help you! Our email address for technical support is: support@sydec.be. If you email us, please try to provide as much relevant information as possible. This may include, depending on the nature of your query: - PC configuration (processor type and speed, RAM, operating system, listing of all installed PCI cards and any other information that seems relevant). - The serial number of your Soundscape hardware unit. This is the serial number indicated by the software under menu: Help|About Soundscape Editor in the Soundscape Editor software, and under menu: Help|About ssMixer in the Soundscape Mixer software. Please note that the serial number at the back of a Soundscape 32 is its chassis serial number, and is usually irrelevant for technical support. - The description of all the connections between your Soundscape unit and other devices.
