What is a fluoropolymer? A fluoropolymer is a fluorocarbon based polymer with strong multiple carbonfluorine bonds.

It is characterized by a high resistance to solvents, acids and bases. Fluoropolymers share the properties of fluorocarbons and they are not as susceptible as the Van Der Waals force, hydrocarbons. It contains the most ideal non stick and friction reducing properties. Fluoropolymers are stable and tend to be inert. Due to this stability multiple carbon fluorine bonds are added to chemical compound. Fluoropolymers are mechanically characterized as thermosets or thermoplastics. A fluoropolymer coating can be applied to all the manufactured metal parts by electrostatic powder coating and can be used to attach large sheets with epoxy to line the interiors of large metal and non metal containers. Praxair Surface Technologies now offers fluoropolymer coatings. The addition of this capability was made possible through the acquisition of Smaltiriva, the company that pioneered the concept of non-stick, non-corrosive, easy-to-clean coatings in Europe. In the United States, application of fluoropolymer coatings is performed at our plant located in Charlotte, North Carolina. The addition of these specialized coatings, with superior non-stick and anti-adhesion properties, adds to the plant's existing portfolio of wear-and corrosion-resistant Detonation Gun, Plasma, and HVOF coatings. Fluoropolymer coatings are applied to various components to provide a longer life before replacement. Industries utilizing fluoropolymer applications include: Plastics processing - molds, rotational molds, form, dies Printing, Packaging, Paper, Cardboard and Converting (anti-adhesion, easy to clean) - ink trays, idler rolls, doctor chambers, frames Automotive (dry lubricant, reduced friction) - mechanical industry parts,

thermo-hydraulic components Painting Applications - paint booths, grids, skids, fixtures, hangers Food Industry (anti-stick): FDA Approved - cheese, candy, molds, trays, bread and baked-goods fixtures Chemical and Pharmaceutical Textile - printing, coating, dyeing Rubber, plastics, adhesives What are Fluoropolymer coatings? Fluoropolymer coatings are blends of high-performance resins and fluoropolymer lubricants. These single-coat, thin films provide excellent corrosion and chemical resistance. Other benefits of fluoropolymer coatings include reduced friction, resistance to galling, non-stick, non-wetting, electrical resistance and abrasion resistance. Fluoropolymer coatings are formulated with special blends of fluoropolymers and other high-performance resins to improve toughness and abrasion resistance. Because the film components stratify during baking, most of the fluoropolymer properties, such as low friction and non-stick are retained. The resins provide adhesion and abrasion resistance. Various resins are used to enable the lubricant to bind to the part being coated. These coatings are formulated primarily for chemical and corrosion resistance, friction control, and lubricity.
