Dear MassArt Community, As the fall semester is now in full swing, I wanted to share some updates and events from around the college. MASSART DAY MassArt Day, traditionally known as Faculty/Staff Day, is reserved for professional development, and has no scheduled classes. This year, it will be held on Thursday, October 3rd. We will include development for all members of the MassArt community: faculty, staff, and students. Below is a schedule of the days activities. 9:00-10:40am Tower Auditorium, Lobby, Tower Building Faculty/Staff Strand (All Faculty & Staff not assigned to Strategic Planning Working Groups) 9:00-9:10 Welcome, brief intro 9:10-10:30 The Americans with Disabilities Amendments Act: Transforming Case Law into Best Practice for MassArt Faculty and Staff Dr. Salome Heyward will present an overview on how colleges need to respond to the ADA Amendments Act. She will cite the latest court cases and Office for Civil Rights findings that are relevant to faculty and support staff. Topics will include: disability documentation, accommodation letters, service animals, admissions, access to technologies and academic freedom issues in the classroom. Attorney Heyward is a nationallyrecognized expert on disability issues in higher education. She is a civil rights attorney with over 30 years experience and is trainer in the area of disability discrimination. 9:00-10:40am Trustees Room, 11th Floor, Tower Building Strategic Planning Strand (All Strategic Planning Working Group members) 9:00-9:10 Welcome, brief intro 9:10-10:30 Strategic Planners Workshop 9:10-9:30 3-Year Extension of the last Strategic Plan Goal: Highlight what was achieved, what may be left to consider. Understand better where weve been and where we are going 9:30-9:50 Data/Resources Goal: Understand what reports we have that might be useful to your work. Provide examples of reports and how they are used (ie; SNAAP - which answers questions like, How much do arts graduates earn? Where do artists reside? How satisfied are arts alumni with their education? How many arts alumni have graduate degrees?) Where and how can data be accessed? 9:50-10:30 Report from initial meetings Goal: Learn from each other where you are in the process - Academic Excellence - Student Success - Enrollment Management - Systems - Reputation - Partnerships 10:30 Join all-college discussion/Tower Auditorium 9:00-10:40am Kennedy Conference Room & Lounge, 2nd Floor, Kennedy Student Strand (All Students) 9:00-9:10 Welcome, brief intro 9:10-10:30 Retail Strategies for Artists Ginger Russell will provide an introduction to selling your handcrafted items in a retail, non-gallery venue, including surveying the competition, how to price your items, and marketing and packaging for stores. Youll learn how to start your own business and sell your creative wares online and in stores around Boston. Ginger Russell is the Creative Director and Manager of MassArt Made. She has a BA and an MA in Art History from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA and extensive retail experience, primarily at Nordstrom.

10:40-12noon - Tower Auditorium All-college discussion on the draft Statement on Diversity and Social Justice Goal: Introduce principles; open the floor to discussion and comments; develop a shared understanding; explore what it means to utilize these principles in our work. 12noon-1:30pm - Break Massachusetts State College Association (MSCA) Lunch on your own Staff Lunch West End Lobby Students Lunch on your own 12:45-1:30pm - Tree House Plaza Thumbprints and Piano Make your mark during the 140th Anniversary Celebration! MassArt Activities Council (MAC) and Student development are hosting an event at the Tree House to mark this anniversary. Students, faculty and staff are invited to add their thumbprint and name to our tree. This tree will be unveiled again during the 150thAnniversary. Come play the Street Piano and add your thumbprint to history! Refreshments will be served. 1:30-3:30pm - Throughout Campus College-wide open house/open studios Visit a department you have always wanted to see . . . check out the show in the galleries . . . experience something somewhere outside of your everyday trajectory. STRATEGIC PLANNING MassArt kicked off its fall 2013 semester on September 3, 2013 with Opening Day/Strategic Planning Day. Faculty and staff gathered to hear announcements about recent hires to the college and were introduced to the process that MassArt is using to construct the 2014-2019 Strategic Plan. AWARDS, RECOGNITION AND MEDIA MORTON R. GODINE MEDAL FOR SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY. I am pleased to announce that Mayor and Mrs. Menino will be awarded the 2013 Morton R. Godine Medal for Service to the Community for their significant contributions to art and design and to the creative spirit of Boston. The award is given by the College in recognition of those who expand the role that art and design play in our community. The medal was established in memory of a former Vice President and Trustee of Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Morton Godine, an admired community leader, teacher, and passionate advocate for the colleges public mission. REALITY CHECK. Reality Check is a compilation of work created by seven artists that uses non-digital editing to create imagery of the world around us. The exhibition was curated by Lisa Tung, Director of Curatorial Programs and opened on September 9th in the Sandra & David Bakalar Gallery. It will be on view until December 7th. ADD Inc will be speaking about the Treehouse Residence Hall at the International Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitats 12th Annual Awards in Chicago, where it was a Best Tall Building Featured Finalist. In addition, ADD Inc will be featuring the Treehouse in their presentation to the Facades Design Delivery Summit in New York City. Last, but certainly not least, the Treehouse was nominated for the prestigious Harleston Parker Medal. This award is Bostons most significant architectural recognition and honors the most beautiful building in Boston. FAMILY VAN REDESIGN. MassArts Graphic Design program and the Center for Art and Community Partnerships collaborated on a redesign of Harvard Medical Schools Family Van, which travels throughout Boston providing free preventative health services. The story focused on Youngstown State Universitys McDonough Museum of Art, which is hosting an exhibit titled Graphic Advocacy: International Posters of the Digital Age. The exhibit, curated by Professor Resnick, includes 120 posters from more than 30 countries created by approximately 80 graphic artists from all over the world. Art in America reviewed Film-Video Professor Ericka Beckmans retrospective Works 1978-2012 at Kunsthalle, Bern. The show travels to Le Magasin Centre National dArt Contemporain de Grenoble in February 2014. http://www.artinamericamagazine.com/reviews/ericka-beckman/ The magazine also reviewed Photography Professor Abelardo Morells touring retrospective The Universe Next Door at the Art Institute of Chicago. http://www.artinamericamagazine.com/reviews/abelardo-morell/ STUDENT AND ALUMNI RECOGNITION AND ACCOLADES PRINCE PASTA CONTEST. For its 100th anniversary, Prince Pasta held an art contest inspired by Boston Landmarks. The contest runs from September 4th October 2nd, and the winner will receive a $5000 scholarship from Prince Pasta. Students from MassArts Studio Foundation Class were invited to participate. Four MassArt students created one-of-a-kind pieces that are featured in the contest. Amanda Gibson (Illustration) submitted modeled her piece after the Paul Revere Statue. Connor ORourke (Animation) recreated a Swan Boat and Greyson Babbitt (Architecture) submitted a model of the Leonard Zakim Bridge. Lindsey Blight (Community Education) also submitted a model of Bostons Swan Boats, which was feautred on Masslive.com on September 20th. Done That. Try This! - An Aspie's Guide to Life on Earth". The book will be published in London by Jessica Kingsley publishers in February, and was edited by Dr. Tony Attwood (International Asperger's Syndrome expert based in Australia), Craig Evans (self advocate and founder of autismhangout.com) and Anita Lesko (self advocate based in Florida). Qazi Fazli Azeem's advice as an Aspie mentor, along with self advocates from around the world, including Dr. Temple Grandin, Anita Lesko, Liane Holliday Willey, Jennifer O'Toole and many others, offer words of wisdom on coping with key stressors such as self-esteem, employment and friendship, based on personal experiences. The Brother Thomas Fund, established by the Boston Foundation, was created to support artists at critical points in their careers. http://www.tbf.org/news-and-events/news/2013/september/br-thomas-fellows-2013 Distinguished Alumni Arne Glimcher (60, FA2D) was appointed Officer of the Legion of Honour by the President of the French Republic. Established in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte, the Legion of Honour recognizes distinguished military or civil services to the Nation. Named Chevalier (Knight) in 2003, Mr. Glimcher was recently promoted in his ranking to Officier (Officer) for his exemplary commitment to the vitality of art worldwide, and generous contributions to French artistic institutions.
