MAIN AIMS To review and critically assess the current situation within the global packaging industry. To anticipate future trends in packaging and forces affecting the business strategy of packaging companies. To develop in-depth knowledge of the science and engineering of packaging materials.

Assess the current and predict the future positions of the global packaging industry Gain an understanding of and critically evaluate the main materials used in the packaging industry: polymers, metals, glass and papers and board Gain a critical understanding of the common characterisation techniques to enable a logical selection Analyse and interpret information from a wide range of sources for the purpose of reaching justified conclusions Logically predict properties and behaviour of packaging materials in a range of environments Demonstrate effective information retrieval skills Demonstrate structured report writing skills Use correctly referencing systems

INDICATIVE CONTENT: The life cycle of packaging: supply chain; raw materials; conversion; usage; retailing and consumer use, final disposal, environmental impact. Internal and external forces affecting the packaging activity within a company. Major issues within the packaging industry from a management and engineering perspective. Science and engineering of packaging materials with a focus on the property, structure and processing relationship. Characterisation techniques.
