OBITUARIES
DOUGLAS DOUG BRADFORD Douglas Doug Bradford, 67, of Kingsport, died Sunday, May 24, 2009, at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport after a courageous battle with mutliple myeloma. Born in Erwin, Doug moved to Washington, D.C. in 1962. He served in the U.S. Secret Service (Uniform Division) from 1969 to 1989, moving back to Kingsport and then worked for Clemons Cab and Limousine service from 1989 to 2004. Mr. Bradford was a member of Bible Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Andy and Pearl Hensley Bradford. Survivors include his loving wife, Darlene Coomer Bradford of the home; two daughters, Linda Bradford-Hinsdill and husband, Kevin, of West Palm Beach, Fla., Beth BradfordPytel and husband, Andy, of White House Station, N.J.; step-daughter, Mandi Cress-Holbrook and husband, Larry, of Pennington Gap, Va.; two sons, Andy Bradford and wife Mai Lan of Austin, Texas, and Douglas Bradford of Baltimore; four grandchildren, Sydney and Aiden Bradford and Steven and Ryan Bland; two sisters, Edna Muriel Portilia and husband, Dennis, of Belair, Fla., Lois Ann Bradford of Erwin; three brothers, Scott Bradford and wife, Wilma, of Erwin, Terry Bradford and wife, Debbie, of Erwin, and Jack Duane Bradford and wife, Tracy, of Jonesborough; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services were held Wednesday, May 27, at Bible Baptist Church, 246 Hilton St., Kingsport, with Pastor Don McCann ofciating. Music was provided by T. Vernon McCray and the church choir. Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 28, at Bradford Family Cemetery, Erwin. Pallbearers were Ken Jones, Jerry Adams, Charlie Weaver, Michael Stykes, Andy Bradford, Douglas Bradford, Andy Pytel and Kevin Hinsdill. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Home Builders Sunday School Class. Memorial contributions may be made to the International Myeloma Foundation, 12650 Riverside Drive, Suite 206, N. Hollywood, CA 91607-3421. Carter-Trent Funeral Home was in charge. BRITTANY KAMILE PRINCESS ERWIN Brittany Kamile Princess Erwin, age 8, 320 Ray Kegley Road, Erwin, died Friday, May 29, 2009, at Unicoi County Memorial Hospital. Brittany was a lifelong resident of Erwin and the daughter of Jimmy Kyle and Dona Erwin of the home. She loved to read books, go shopping and play on her computer. Brittany attended Love Chapel Elementary School and would have been entering the second grade this fall. She attended Faith Baptist Church. Other than her parents, Brittany is survived by three brothers, Jefferson Kyle Erwin and Brandon Estep, both of the home, and Justin Engle of Erwin; paternal grandparents, Jerry and Mary Erwin of Erwin; maternal grandfather, Ornel Burker and wife, Judy, Elizabethton; maternal grandmother, Mildred Burker of Erwin; godparents Seth and Kim Berry of Unicoi; several aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and Brittanys special friends in Mr. Nicks class, nurses Jennifer and Bethany and many others whose lives she touched. Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 30, from the Robert Ledford Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jeff Autrey and Pastor G.B. Garland ofciating. Music was provided by Inez Chandler. Graveside committal services were held at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, May 31, in Tinker Cemetery. Stacy Wigand, Seth Berry, Howard Townsend, Nick Lingerfelt, John Hilemon and Gary Burker served as active pallbearers. Southside Volunteer Fire Department and the Unicoi County Sheriffs Department served as honorary pallbearers. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners of Unicoi County 4016 Unicoi Drive, Unicoi, TN 37692. Robert Ledford Funeral Home was in charge. MARGIE PEARL HAMMITT Margie Pearl Hammitt, age 78, 1601 W. Main St., Jonesborough, died Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at Johnson City Medical Center. Mrs. Hammitt was a resident of Washington County for most of her life and a daughter of the late James and Martha Watts Hayes. She was a homemaker and a member of New Salem Baptist Church, Limestone. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hammitt was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Hammitt, four brothers and one sister. Survivors include four sons, Robert Green Jr. and Teddy Green, both of Jonesborough, Donald Ray Green, Johnson City, and Jackie Green, North Carolina; one daughter, Betty Lou Miller, Jonesborough; one brother, Orvil Hayes, Kingsport; one sister, Beatrice Brown, Telford; 14 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services were held Friday, May 29, at 3 p.m. in New Salem Baptist Church Cemetery, 421 Lester Snapp Road, Limestone. Erwin Memorial Funeral Home was in charge. WILLIE MAE JACKSON Willie Mae Jackson, age 82, Cobis Personal Care Home, 7200 Manor Road No. 31, Columbus, Ga., died Thursday, May 28, 2009, at her residence. Mrs. Jackson was a native of Unicoi County and had been a resident of Columbus for the past 24 years. She was a daughter of the late Mack M. Dugger Sr. and Mary Lou Miller Dugger. Mrs. Jackson was a former employee of Southern Potteries and a homemaker. She was a former member of Erwin Presbyterian Church. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Jackson was preceded in death by her husband, William Albert Jackson, in 1983, her daughter, Teresa Lynn Jackson, and her sister, Helen M. Gouge. Survivors include her son, William Michael Jackson and wife, Carla, Columbus, Ga.; her brother, Mack M. Dugger Jr., Limestone Cove community of Unicoi; her nephew, Charles Mack Gouge and wife, Pam, Columbus, Ga.; her niece, Susan Waddell and husband, Stephen, Fortson, Ga.; great-nephews, Todd Newton and wife, Denise, Smithville, N.C., Tony Newton and wife, Marie, Columbus, Ga.; great-greatnephews and niece, Zach, Austin, Tara and Andrew Newton. Graveside services were held Sunday, May 31, at 3 p.m. in Evergreen Cemetery, Erwin, with the Rev. Steve Rembert ofciating. Memorial contributions may be made to Erwin Presbyterian Church, 105 N. INA MAE EDWARDS PICKETT Ina Mae Edwards Pickett, 86, of Waynesboro, Va., died Sunday, May 24, 2009, at Summit Square Retirement Community. Mrs. Pickett was born Aug. 3, 1922, in Erwin, the daughter of the late David and Ida Hyder Edwards. She worked for the National Institute of Health and the Department of Defense, and then for East Tennessee State University. She was also a licensed practical nurse and a member of the Mint Spring United Methodist Church. Mrs. Pickett was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel T. Pickett; a daughter, Sharon Piland; brothers, Hyder and Lon Edwards; two sisters, Gladys Edwards and Lillian and her husband, Bill King. S u r v ivors include a son, William Nusbaum and his wife, Lu, of Hendersonville; daught e r s , Maralyn Vorhauer of Hagerstown, Md., and Danielle Plant and her husband, Dan, of Locust Grove, Va.; brothers, David Edwards and wife, Esther, Bennick Edwards and wife, Rebecca, and Billy Edwards and wife, Ernestine; sister Margaret Werner and husband, Stewart; brotherin-law Tommy Piland; sisters-in-law Mary Margaret Edwards and Madeline Edwards; 17 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. A service was conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, May 29, at McDow Funeral Home by the Rev. Steven Propst. Burial and services were held Saturday, May 30, in Union Bridge, Md., handled by Hartzler Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Summit Square, 501 Oak Ave., Waynesboro, VA 22980. LINDA SUE RICHARDSON Linda Sue Richardson, age 52, died Saturday, May 23, 2009, at her residence. Mrs. Richardson was a native of Unicoi County and the daughter of the late Doyle Buchanan and Dorothy Hilton Buchanan. She was a homemaker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Brenda Buchanan. Survivors include her husband, Jeffrey of the home; sons, Jimmy Lewis of Erwin, Donny Lewis of Erwin and Timothy Lewis of Jonesborough; brothers, Michael Wayne Buchanan of Jonesborough, Doyle Buchanan Jr. of Jonesborough, William Randall Buchanan of Kingsport and Jeffrey Buchanan of Johnson City; sisters, Doris Lewis of Erwin and Wilma Buchanan of Erwin; and 10 grandchildren. Graveside services were held at Beans Creek Cemetery in North Carolina Thursday, May 28, following the receiving of friends at Valley Funeral Home in Erwin. The Rev. Larry Shelton ofciated. Valley Funeral Home was in charge. MARIE W. SWOFFORD Marie W. Swofford, age 80, 509 Ninth St., Erwin, died Satu r d a y, May 23, 2009, at the Center on Aging and Health. M r s . Swofford was an Erwin native and resident here for the past 60 years. She was a daughter of the late Robert Lee and Anna Myrtle Atkins Williams. Mrs. Swofford was coowner of Swofford Air Conditioning and Refrigeration. She was a member of First Christian Church, where she was a member of the Booster Sunday School Class and sang in the choir. Mrs. Swofford was a member of the Erwin Womens Club. She enjoyed her ower gardens, especially her roses. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Swofford was preceded in death by her husband, Roy C. Tiny Swofford, in 2007; three brothers, Marvin, Horace and Arnold Williams; and one sister, Irene Adkins. Survivors include one daughter, Patricia Patti Swofford Newton, Bristol, Tenn.; one brother, Alvin R. Williams and wife, Peggy, Florida; two sisters, Elouise Hughes and husband, Buster, and Marjorie Williams, all of Erwin; one brother-in-law, James Lee Swofford and wife, Betty, Cullman, Alabama; one sister-in-law, Evelyn Brown, Lansing, Mich.; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, May 26, at 8 p.m. from the Robert Ledford Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. William Gwaltney and Pastor Tim Stamper ofciating. Special music was provided by Nancy Bogart. The graveside committal service was held Wednesday, May 27, at 11 a.m. in Evergreen Cemetery. Pallbearers were Kenny Ray, Dennis Hughes, David Williams, Eddie Williams, Farrell Ollis and Shawn Whitson. Robert Ledford Funeral Home was in charge. DEWEY H. TAYLOR Dewey H. Taylor, 78, Jo h n s o n City, died Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at Johnson City Me d i c a l Center after a lengthy illness. Mr. Taylor was a son of the late Porter and Eliza Linvelle Taylor. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in the Korean conict. He was employed as a truck driver for Mason Dixon for more than 28 years, he served with the Washington County Sheriffs Department as a deputy. He was the rst operator of the metal detectors in the Washington County Courthouse. He had also worked for the Johnson City Power Board. Mr. Taylor was a Mason and a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 489 in Limestone for more than 45 years and gave more than 500 lectures. He was a Christian and a member of Skyline Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, Mr. Taylor was preceded in death by Betty Ruth Taylor, his wife of 57 years who died May 8, 2009; brothers and sisters Ruth Taylor, Bruce Taylor, Lee Linville, Lydia Maupin, Ralph Taylor, Lawrence Taylor and several others. Survivors include two daughters, Teresa Pritchard, Raleigh N.C., and Cindy Taylor and husband, Bryan, of Milligan College; a son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Teresa Taylor, Johnson City; ve grandchildren, Jody Livingston,
