FEATHERED FRIENDS
By Bryan Stevens on the television and saw the box was empty, she said she went immediately to the yard. Blossom was perched on Jerrys amateur radio antenna and started chirping as if to inform Barbara that the babies had left the nest. Shes such a sweet little bird, even if she does have a strong personality, Barbara said. After they departed, Barbara gave the box a thorough cleaning and even disposed of the old nest. The story didnt end there. About a week later, Blossom returned and knocked at the living room window. Jerry ventured that Blossom was thanking Barbara for cleaning out the box, but Barbara said she got the impression Blossom was scolding her. Barbara said she felt as if Blossom was asking Where have you taken my

nest? So, Blossom, for the moment is out of the bird house, but Barbara, in her own words, is in the dog house. I am sure that wont last long. With landlords as dedicated as Barbara and Jerry Lake, why would any bluebirds look elsewhere for a home? I spent the Memorial Day weekend visiting friends
in Atlanta. The trip also gave me an opportunity to appreciate some common birds that have their stronghold in the southern United States. Several of the birds White-breasted Nuthatches, Carolina Wrens and Tufted Titmice are also present at my own home on Simerly Creek Road in Hampton. Others, such as the pair of Brown-headed Nuthatches and Pine Warblers, are birds with more specialized habitat preferences. So, seeing them at a feeder in a backyard setting was certainly a treat even as they made appearances with such common species as Carolina Chickadee, House Finch, Downy Woodpecker and Common Grackle. Brown-headed Nuthatches, which require stands of tall pines for their habitat, range as far north as northeastern Texas and Tennessee and eastward into far southern Pennsylvania. They are most common, however, in South Carolina, Georgia, central Florida and southern Mississippi. It is one of the few birds with a range confined to the United States, although there is an endan-
gered population in the Bahamas. I also witnessed some interaction between this small nuthatch and its larger relative, the Whitebreasted Nuthatch. In fact, since the nesting season is more advanced in Georgia than Northeast Tennessee, there was a family of seven White-breasted Nuthatches that descended with surprising regularity on the feeders at the home of my friends. In confrontations, the Brown-headed Nuthatch is low on the ladder. I saw these little birds chased from the feeder by Carolina Chickadees, Tufted Titmice and White-breasted Nuthatches. I also saw Brown Thrashers feeding on the ground beneath the feeders maintained by my friends. At home, theres also a pair of Brown Thrashers, but I rarely enjoy more than a glimpse of them as they skulk in a thick hedge of forsythia. In contrast, the Brown Thrashers I observed in the wooded setting of an Atlanta suburb were tame and confiding instead of nervous and flighty. I also visited the Atlanta Botanical Gardens, where I

observed non-native California Quail roaming the confines of the Conservatory. The Botanical Gardens also attracted such native birds as American Robins, Tree Swallows, Chimney Swifts and Song Sparrows. The most impressive observations included a singing Warbling Vireo and a pair of Red-tailed Hawks soaring over the parking garage adjacent to the Botanical Gardens. At home, the Tree Swallows are still feeding young in their nest box, but the Carolina Chickadees occupying the box near the back porch have fledged their young, apparently while I was away from home. I am still seeing a few Ruby-throated Hummingbirds and I also saw a Barn Swallow this past week as this graceful bird skimmed over the surface of the fish pond.
