INDUSTRIAL PROFILE OF THE DISTRICT Medium and Large Scale Industry Development The district has 290 numbers of medium and large scale units with an investment of Rs. 79993 Lacs in Plant & Machinery, employing 37387 persons as on 31-03-2007. It can be observed from the above that the small industry clusters in the district consists mainly of chemical industry, textile industry, engineering industry and wooden industry. 3.0 TECHNICAL EDUCATION AND INDUSTRIAL TRAINING There is a Government Engineering College offering degree courses in engineering and a Government Polytechnic offering diploma engineering courses in Valsad. The details of Technical Education institutes in Valsad are given in Table 3.1.

More over, there are six ITIs having total 1737 seats in the district offering various industrial training courses as shown in Annexure I, out of which two have Apparel Park Training center and two are Center of Excellence. 3.1 Availability of Students There were 2443 students appeared in 12th science and 9809 students appeared in 12th General Stream examinations. Out of these 1740 (71.22%) students and 8452 (86.17%) students have passed respectively during the current year. 4.0 NEED FOR ITI EXTENSION CENTERS It can be observed from the industrial profile of the district that there is concentrated growth of chemical industry, textile industry, engineering industry and paper industry in the district. Mainly chemical industry and paper industry have developed in Vapi and Sarigam, where as textiles and non chemical industries have developed in Umargam. It has been learnt that there is need for industry specific manpower training in the centers like Vapi, Umargam, Sarigam, etc. 5.0 5.1 SELECTION OF ITI EXTENSION CENTER General The premises are available to set up ITI extension centers for manpower training in GIDC estates at Vapi, Umargam and Sarigam.

Vapi Industries Association (VIA) has shown preparedness to set up and run ITI extension centers for manpower training in the premises available with them. It is learnt that the GIDC Industry Associations at Umargam and Sarigam also ready to set up and run ITI extension centers for manpower training. Vapi, Umargam and Sarigam are well connected by communication facilities as well as Railway and National Highway. Vapi is very well developed town, where as Umargam and sarigam are industrially developed towns. 5.2 Vapi Centre Vapi Industrial Estate, developed by Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation, had come into existence in 1967-68. The Estate spreads over 1140 hectares and houses over 1500 hundred industries, most of which are SSI units. Basically a "declared" chemical estate, about 70% of the industries are chemical and chemical related such as Dyes & Dyes Intermediates, Pigments, Pesticides, Fine Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals etc. The remaining 30% comprises of Paper Mills, Packaging (both paper and plastic based), Engineering, Plastics, Textiles, Food Processing, Paints, Printing Inks & many other products. Vapi is located on the National Highway No.8 (Ahmedabad - Mumbai) with the Union Territories of Daman and Dadra & Nagar Haveli on either side. Also, well connected by Railway. Proximity to major cities: Mumbai 180Kms, Valsad 30Kms, Surat 125 Kms, Ahmedabad 370 Kms. 5.3 Vapi Industries Association (VIA) Vapi Industries Association came into existence in 1971. The present membership strength is around 1500 industrial units situated in Vapi GIDC Estate. VIA renders invaluable services to its constituents in all strata of industrial activities and performs a catalytic role in implementing various policies and programs of the Government. VIA has set up a separate cell Vapi Emergency Control Center, to provide timely service to the industries in the event of an emergency arising out of any accidental occurrence or anything of its kind. The Center is controlled by a Committee under the Chairmanship of the District Collector, Valsad, Gujarat. To bridge the ever-widening gap between demand and availability of trained Safety Officers employment of whom is a statutory requirement,

VIA started a Government recognised Two Year Post Diploma Course in Industrial Safety with twenty five students each batch of two years. Besides organizing on a regular basis Seminars, Symposiums, Business Meets, Human Resources Development Programs etc., the Association organizes an Industrial Exhibition once in every four years in which industries and trade from across the country participate. VIA has built up a Community Hall and two Conference Halls for the benefit of its members as well as the general public and operates several in-door sports facilities 6.0 SELECTION OF SHORT TERM TRAINNING PROGRAMMES In view of the concentration and of chemical industry, textiles industry and engineering in Valsad district and its potential, there is need of the following short term courses. REASONS FOR SELECTION OF CENTRES 1) Small industries cluster development as well as medium and large industries development in the area, particularly in chemicals, textiles and engineering industries. 2) Further potential for development of ancillary industry. 3) Availability of necessary infrastructure facility like premises, communication and transportation facilities to set up ITI extension center. 4) Industry Associations in Vapi, Umargam and Sarigam have shown preparedness in setting up and running the ITI extension center. 5) Vapi Industries Association (VIA) has the required premisese to set up and run ITI Extension center. VIA is already conducting two year part time courses related to Industrial Environment and Industrial Safety.
