Year 7 ENGLISH Speaking and listening is assessed through class tasks, including individual, paired and group activities.

Reading is assessed through a wide range of texts including non-fiction, poetry and pre-20th century drama such as Skellig, Our Day Out and 'His Dark Materials'. Private reading is supported through Library lessons, reading journals and participation in Readathon. In addition to this, a selection of pupils take part in The Carnegie Shadowing Awards in the Summer Term.

Writing is developed through a wide range of writing tasks including creative, transactional and response to texts such as Boy, magazines, literature and poetry on the theme of cats. Language skills lessons support growing assurance in spelling, grammar, punctuation and handwriting. ICT is used to assist pupils in developing drafting and presentation techniques.

Year 8 ENGLISH Speaking and listening is assessed through class tasks, including individual, paired and group activities.

Reading is assessed through a wide range of texts including non-fiction, pre-20th century work, prose, poetry and Drama such as The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and The Merchant of Venice. Private reading is supported through Library lessons and reading journals. Pupils will also be participating in both Readathon as well as The Carnegie Shadowing Awards in which they read a selection of novels and create a school shadowing website. Accelerated Reader has been introduced to year 8 where students will read the texts of their choice and complete online quizzes on them.

journals and poetry of culture and identity. Language lessons support growing assurance in spelling, grammar, punctuation and handwriting. ICT is used to assist pupils in developing drafting and presentation techniques.

Year 9 ENGLISH Speaking and listening is assessed through class tasks, including individual, paired and group activities.

Reading is assessed through a wide range of texts including non-fiction, pre-20th century prose, poetry and drama such as Stone Cold and Macbeth. In addition, pupils will undertake a unit on unseen poetry to improve their analysis and discussion of poetry. Private reading is supported through library lessons and participation in Readathon, The Carnegie Awards and Reading Connects.

Writing is developed through a wide range of writing tasks including creative, transactional and response to a variety of stimuli and themes. Language skills lessons support growing assurance in spelling, grammar, punctuation and handwriting. ICT is used to assist pupils in developing drafting and presentation techniques. Pupils begin developing new skills to ease the transition between Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 by undertaking a course in Media and Non-Fiction and begin to look at texts critically.
