Legendary Green Bay Packer Head Coach Vince Lombardi once said, Winning isnt everything, its the only thing. 5 When referring to professional sports hes dead on, but at the high school level athletes are learning much more than simply how to win or lose. 5 Theyre learning how to work hard and compete at the highest level of their ability - traits designed to help them mature as individuals and hopefully help them succeed throughout the remainder of their lives. 5 For the Redwood Valley girls volleyball team its been another competitive season, despite playing one of the toughest overall schedules in the State. 5 Led by seniors Tara Christensen, Melissa Karsky and Brianna Spielmann, the Cardinals have looked at each game as a different challenge and have learned to look beyond winning and losing. 5 As a team, we dont mind being the underdog, Karsky said 5 It gives us the mindset that we can just go out there, play and have fun. 5 One look at the teams brutal schedule and its easy to see what the Cardinals were up against during the 2004 season. 5 First, consider the fact that the SWC is one of the best overall volleyball conferences in the State.

The coaches are always looking to the future as to how to improve the program. We really want to be at the level of other teams in our area and hope with hard work we will be able to achieve it.

History of Cardinal football quite interesting

In this very issue of the Gazette, Dan wrote a column on some of the statistical history of the Redwood Valley football program. As he stated, whats remarkable is that there is a ton of information on record concerning the historical nature of the football program since its inception at around the turn of

the 20th century. Here are a few interesting tidbits that Ive come up with: 1) Who are the teams the Cards have had the most success against? They were 23-4-4 against Springfield from 19051962; 27-6-4 against Olivia from 1910-1962; 13-6-2 from 1913-1981 against Slayton; and more recently have gone 33-24-

3 against New Ulm (from 19171960 the Cards were 20-11-3 and from 1983-2001 they went 13-4.) 2) Who has the best winning percentage against the Cards? Marshall has gone 35-48-6 against the Cards since 1902 (they did not play from 19041913, 1915, 1917-19 and 192728.)

3) Who have the Cards had the closest series with? Luverne is 24-22 against Redwood since 1962; Windom is 32-29-1 against the Cards since 1910; and Redwood leads Pipestone 24-19-2 since 1926. 4) Biggest blowout for the Cards? While Marshall leads the overall series, the Cardinals can sport the most dominating

victory - a 90-0 win back in 1914. The Cards also hammered St. Peter 86-0 in 1917. The modern day record is a 67-8 win over Montevideo in 2001. 5)Biggest blowout against the Cards? A 60-0 loss to Windom back in 1924.
