Hearthstone
Move over Magic: The Gathering
Multiplication might destroy meaning, but imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. The online collectible card game market has been missing something for a long time. At first it was a card game that worked, and then Magic: The Gathering Online showed up. However, it still cost just about as much (sometimes more) than playing Magic: The Gathering in person. Unlike The Pokemon Trading Card Game for Gameboy Color, which was the best TGC on the go at that point, MTG: Online recreated not only the feel of the game but also the ability to play with whomever, whenever. The exception is MTG: Online, which was a little too early and too costly so fell to the wayside, cradled by those with the pocketbook and lack of social skills necessary to play and enjoy the game. As Ive written before, the online CCG remained in obscurity, with a few games rising up to compete such as the Yu-Gi-Oh games, but nothing really got its foot into the door. Recent titles such as Heroes of Might and Magic: Champions and Cardhunter have brought CCG games back into the forefront, it hasnt been enough to skyrocket the genre back into legitimacy. Then Blizzard got involved. Hearthstone, Blizzards new collectible card game and free-to-play title, has been pushed out to the press and lucky beta subscribers and is excellent. It combines the best parts of the magic with mechanics that work perfectly for online gaming. Couple that with Blizzards Battle.net support, and oh yeah, the fact that the game is free, and you have a recipe for an incredibly successful free-to-play effort. The game is based around Warcraft heroes, with players taking control of nine different classes, each with their own special cards and abilities. Like Magic, players summon creatures and cast spells all while trying to reduce the opposing players health to zero. The game has tons of strategy, with card abilities making it a strategic decision to attack the player or kill a minion. If a player doesnt have a creature with taunt, all of your creatures can power through without fear of being blocked, but the same rules apply to you. Not killing a minion can mean the difference between winning and losing. This fine line of one play making the difference is what makes CCGs so great, and Hearthstones mechanics make for some incredible plays. Cards combo well and the powers and abilities are simple enough for younger gamers to enjoy. Each hero has a different play style, which further simplifies deck style without sacrificing complexity. Want to build a minion-killer deck? No problem! Build a rogue or warlock deck to take advantage of their powerful class cards. Still, Hearthstone isnt perfect. The hand limit is too high, allowing players to draw about a third of their deck before they must discard cards. There arent any instance cards, meaning all spells must be played on your turn, which limits fun strategies found in most card games. But the game is incredibly fun and it balances free-to-play well. The basic cards are available after leveling up the classes and are plenty of fun without paying money. It takes a while to earn gold to buy more packs or compete in the Arena (a tournament where players open random packs and compete with custom-built decks), but there is plenty of fun to be had that you wont notice how many hours you sink into the game before earning that 100 gold or completing a quest for a new pack. You can always spend money to buy more packs, and surprisingly the game is so good that buying more packs sounds fun rather than a means to an end.

My Vita is finally getting some miles. Spelunky, a former freeware game for PC, hit the Vita about a week ago, and its a perfect fit for the spunky handheld device. The rogue-like dungeon crawler is a tough 2D side-scroller that tests not only a gamers reflexes, but their endurance too. Dying means you start over, but the satisfaction of getting deeper and deeper into the mines (sometimes finding checkpoints) pays off in the end. For $15 you get a great dungeoncrawler that will test your limits but give you a perfect excuse to enjoy the nooks and crannies of your couch, dusting off that PS Vita for one of the first salvos of great indie titles coming to the system. It is a little tough, which will scare away some gamers, and getting past the initial difficulty barrier is tough for all gamers, but it is worth it in the long run.

Little is Big
I have two amazing friends who just happen to be a couple. They are equally fantastic humans. Recently, though, they suck. To everyones dismay, theyve slipped into a valley of arguments, resentment and apathy. I hate this chapter in love stories. The endearment and happiness is easy to handle, but the discomfort and tears are as much fun as using a port-a-potty after a slightly odd Chinese meal. What really gnashes my teeth together about their situation, though, is how they got to this place. Our circle has watched and listened with sick anticipation. Weve had front row seats to their train wreck. So what was the defining event that derailed Mr. and Mrs. Right? Nothing. It wasnt one big thing. It was twenty million tiny things, and so is the way of life. An avalanche isnt one snowflake the size of Jupiter. A tsunami isnt a single drop of angry water. Im going to skip forward to the part that matters in this tale of dating woes. Relationships are tricky, and each one is going to have its own set of problems. When something small is happening for example, an argument over chores left undone just listen. Consider whats being said. Is it fair? Is it really that big of a deal if you bend your view on that subject just enough to come to a happy compromise? Is adjusting a few small habits in your life to make the person you love happy an impossible task? If your answer to these questions is yes, then grab your raincoat because your actions overtime will inevitably create the perfect storm. If your answer is no, then welcome to the ballgame of lasting love. For the frosting on the cupcake, I offer you a few sweet tips on how to best grease your relationship wheel so that you, your fun time, your football game, and your boys can live happily ever after in harmony with your lady smiling on. 1. Approach your lover on a daily basis with consideration: Its a full-time job. Dont get lazy. Same goes with your career, your health and basically anything. Pay attention or pay the price. Luckily, when it comes to love, the job is pretty damn fluffy. 2. Hold her hand: Its small, but its intimate and protective. We love it. In many cases, it goes further than I love you. 3. Pay her compliments: If you tell your girl something about her that you like even once a week, shell show you more than once a week just how happy she is with you (use your imagination on this one). 4. Be chivalrous: Some say its dead but I think its on life support. Open her door. Carry her bag. Try being old-school and see if she likes it. Better being told off for attempting to use old-school manners than for being rude. 5. Surprise her: Even once a year will do. Please realize that most women melt for surprises. It literally turns us into giggly schoolgirls. Its a no brainer. Pretty simple, eh? Its not the holy grail of coupledom, but consider it a heavy-duty stain guard. Try it out. Your love life will thank me.

Dallas Holiday:
How to really celebrate your OU/TX weekend in the Dee-Eff-Dubs
For Oklahoma and Texas residents, there is a major holiday in between Labor Day and Halloween that falls at the beginning of October. Oh, and you must be a fan of either the Sooners or saxeT to really partake. (However, Id wager pre-SEC Texas A&M followed and highly anticipated the inevitable Sooner win.) This year its on Saturday, October 12. Yes, its OU/Texas weekend! For this momentous occasion, the Sooners and the Longhorns convene at a neutral location: Dallas, Texas. Having lived in Dallas for a few years of my life, I call it my second home. Luckily its one heck of a metro with many options to make the weekend of the game memorable. So if youre a student with the luxury of the four-day holiday weekend, or a diehard fan who loves a little rivalry, take advantage of the city with dining and party options a-plenty. NIGHTLIFE: Its pretty unanimous that the places to be are either West End or Uptown. In Uptown I usually go to Concrete Cowboy, Kung Fu, and Sixth Street (they have dancing) but there are a ton of places around. I just stick to that corner because my friends apartment is across the street, says OU alumnus Katie Wise. Feelin country? Go to The Ginger Man. In West End, youll most likely be shoulder-to-shoulder in a crimson and burnt-orange sea. As OU fan Brett Bilbe says, You get in faces, remind your rivals of their teams most recent embarrassment (this made the year after Boise really suck), and repeat. There are clubs and bars a-plenty filled with people, but not too many puke and cause serious trouble (those seats are expensive, after all). If you ate at Spaghetti Warehouse, you chose well for a two-in-one food and entertainment center. It is converted into a double-level club with a full bar and beer stations every 20 yards. GAME TIME: The past two years we have gone to The House of Blues. There is an African-American ministry from OKC called the 405 Boyz that sells tickets for $20. You get mimosas and food, and there are a ton of TV screens to watch the game! We stumbled on it accidentally two years ago and hope they do it again this year, says Morgan Barber, OU fan and alumnus. A fan on the other side of the Red River, Kimberly Burgess, says, We go to watch the game at Victory Park! They put the game on all of the big screens. People bring coolers with drinks and you can buy food everywhere. It is packed every year! My recommendation? Pretty much any bar in Dallas will be good. I have some friends who went to Hooters and got nice and toasty there for a few hours one year.
FOOD: Its no secret one of the big places to go the night before the game is West End. The roads are blocked off so fans can walk up and down the road to scope out culinary options. Jayme Neal, an attendant of the big celebration at West End, says theres a Spaghetti Warehouse and a TGI Fridays. Breadwinners has the best brunch, says Anitha Kuttemperoor, lifelong Dallas resident and UT alumnus. Hop Doddy has the BEST BURGER EVER too. She added that Torchys has good tacos, queso, and street corn; Sprinkles has the best cupcakes and Velvet Taco is like a combination of the two. LODGING: Personally I recommend finding a hotel near The Dart for easy transportation. If youre near the West End, pack up like sardines in a hotel room so its much cheaper. Treat yourself to something a little more luxurious but cut costs and have a blast with your friends. Jayme Neal, who favors the West End, recommends staying downtown at the Sheraton. MISCELLANY: For some peace and quiet, go to Thanks-Giving Square. Its website, www.thanksgiving.org , describes it as, a Downtown chapel, meditation garden and exhibit designed to inspire and promote the giving of thanks by people of all faiths. The site goes on to say it is a national shrine with, unique stained glass Glory Window, featuring 73 stained-glass panels created by French artist Gabriel Loire. Perhaps its a good place to reflect on some particularly spiteful smack-talkin at OU/TX. Of course, who could forget the Texas State Fair? Its the one time a year I can feel okay about guzzling grease-soaked unnamables. Ive heard theres deep fried Kool-Aid. (How does that even work? Do they pour a jug of Kool-Aid in grease or what?) The site says that the 2013 Big Tex Choice Awards Winners are as follows: Best Tasting: Deep-Fried Cuban Roll Most Creative: Fried Thanksgiving Dinner What the? I wont even ask. Ill just eat it. Feeling adventurous? Try the deep-fried bubblegum. Then, oh yeah, there are the rides. But we all know the food is the main attraction. So there you have it! Change up your OU/TX routine, go to Dallas and partake in the festivities before, during and after OUs big win!
