~~PROGRAM~~

Our speakers today were Rotarians PDG Laura Day and Sheila Hurst, who developed the districtwide project Kenya Smiles over a year ago. Last year, our District 5160 was in the final year of the Future Vision Project, and Laura and Sheila succeeded in obtaining a District-wide Global Grant and Vocational Team project to provide a dental preventive care and oral health education for the children of Kenya. In Kenya, The Rotary Clubs of Nairobi, Meru, and Karen were heavily involved as well. All 71 Clubs in our District contributed about $53,000 (setting a record in Foundation giving), and The Rotary Foundation provided $200,000 more. The group wanted a pure Rotary project, with no outside charities nor governments involved. As a result, Kenya Smiles is considered a TRF model project, and it was the first time ever for a Vocational Exchange Project. The excellent Kenyan professional team involved six of the top dentists in Kenya, recruited from government, academia, and private practice. They were able to visit the dental schools at UCSF, UOP, and were surprised by the CA Dental Association who arranged a congratulatory resolution from the California State Senate. The 13 person District 5160 team to Kenya, led by Rotarian Sheila Hurst, were assisted in outreach efforts in Kenya by the Kenya Dental Association and the University School of Journalism, and even by Ghetto Radio with a daily audience of 200,000 in Nairobi. The team had solicited donations for dental equipment, and was able to bring about $50,000 worth of such items to Kenya. They also brought a suitcase-sized dental office. The project goal was largely educational, since Kenya has less than 1000 dentists (with the same population as California) and most residents can t afford dental care. They provided classes and information about proper nutrition, and provided 200 energy efficient jiko stoves, and backpacks to 5,000 children containing toothbrushes and toothpaste, and educational literature. The team is now considering a similar project in neighboring Uganda.
