On the evening of Sept. 29, Stephen Hackley finished the last strokes on a painting depicting a luminous scene of a floral horse galloping through a winter landscape leaving a spring meadow in its wake. Hackley, an artist from Dallas, was one of the 75 artists from around the country represented at the first South Street Art Festival in downtown Arlington.

From Sept. 27 through to Sept. 29, more than 3,000 people showed up at the festival, said Steve Moya, the South Street Art Festival founder and organizer. Sponsored by local entities, including UTA, the Levitt Pavilion and Birds Copies, the festival featured painters, photographers and sculptors. In addition to fine art, attendees enjoyed food from local restaurants, including The Grease Monkey Burger Shop and Social Club and desserts from Jim and Lors Candy Store. Live music from various bands, such as Swan Song, a Led Zeppelin tribute band, completed the ambiance of the art festival. Generally, Hackley said he doesnt participate in first-year art shows but decided to take part in the South Street Art Festival because he knew Moya was organizing it. I like Steve Moya, Hackley said. Hes an artist too. He knows what its like. He knows what artists want at festivals.

Hackley particularly appreciated Moyas organization of the festival. Moya pays attention to the placement of artists, taking care to place artists of similar styles near each other, Hackley said.

The artists had a good experience and were happy, Moya said. For him, it was important for the artists, bands and attendees to work together to make the event happen. Steve does a good job with his festivals. I hope to come back next year, said Jennifer Worth, owner of South Austin Gallery. Worth shares her business with her husband, Joseph, and at the festival, Worth set up a booth with various items featuring their photography, including ceramic coasters, magnets and glass cutting boards . Their photography illustrates unique local landmarks and characteristic signs found in Texas cities, including Arlington, Denton, Dallas, Fort Worth and Austin. Worth travels to at least 60 art shows a year, stopping in Arlington three times a year. Theres been a lot of interest. Everyones been really nice. Its been a nice, small festival, Anna Lee Wagoner said. Wagoner is the owner of Roots Flying South Photography, based in Grand Prairie, Texas, and specializes in old Americana style photography, she said. Her photos often feature gas pumps and antique cars, and she showcases her work at many festivals, including the Deep Ellum Art Festival and the Lamar Street Festival. This festival was Wagoners first festival experience in Arlington. I really loved seeing the handmade sculptures . Its really interesting, and all these people are so talented, clinical psychology senior Rebecca Mayfield said. I love going to art festivals to see the talent. This festival is not as big as the Main Street Arts Fest in Fort Worth, but its just as nice, and the talent is equally impressive for sure. Christopher Corry, kinesiology alumnus, said this weekends event has brought some life into downtown Arlington. Mayfield and Corry were driving by downtown Arlington and decided to stop by to browse through the artwork on the last day of the festival. People have been really receptive to the event. Moya said. As long as people are happy then it will come back. @missannmai ann.mai@mavs.uta.edu
