ETHIOPIAN GOVERNMENT
BACKGROUND
Ethiopias government is similar to the U.Ss in some ways but also has its unique differences. The government is classified as a federal republic and the people are governed under the Constitution of 1994. In Ethiopia there is both a president and a prime minister. There are three branches of government just like in the United States. The Judicial branch consists of the highest courts, Federal Supreme or Supreme Imperial Courts with 11 judges and the Federal Supreme has power over all constitutional problems. Subordinate courts are state courts and customary or traditional courts. President and Vice President of Federal Supreme Court are nominated by the Prime Minister and selected by the House of Peoples Representatives. Supreme Court judges are simply nominated by the Federal Judicial Administrative Council and chosen by the House of the Peoples Representatives. In Ethiopia judges serve until age 60, which is their retirement age. The legislative branch is a bicameral Parliament that includes the House of Federation, which is responsible for interpreting the constitution and federal and regional problems. This house hold 108 seats and members are selected by 'state assemblies,' and elected to a five-year term. The House of People's Representation is the lower chamber. Its most important duty is passing legislation. There are 547 seats in which are elected by popular votes to serve a five-year term. The executive branch includes the chief of state, the chief of government, and the cabinet. Presidents are elected by members of parliament and the Prime Minister is designated by the party that is in power.
