To shore things up, at the suggestion of City Manager Phil Ludos, any sign
requests will now be handled by the community development and inspection
department.
Prior to councils change Monday, Oct. 7, residents and business owners re-
questing temporary, grand opening and sign arbitration appeals were han-
dled by the city clerks office. All other requests went to CDI.
Ludos made the suggestion so were not sending people to two or three
places before they can get the sign.

out CDI enforces the
citys sign ordinance any-
way and requested the
verbiage in the ordinance
be changed affirming
non-profit organizations
are not charged a fee for
temporary signs advertis-
ing their events.
Councilman John
Caron tweaked it more,
suggesting adding non-
and not for profit organi-
zations to the exemption
list.
Councilman Tony Tiseo
expressed concern about
CDI handling requests
as quickly and efficient-
ly as City Clerk Mary
Kotowski.
Ludos said the city gets
between 20 and 30 re-
quests annually and was
confident CDI could han-
dle that very small num-
ber.
And besides, more
work has been added to
Kotowskis department
over the years, he said.
Its the same process,

Rehabilitating foreclosed properties purchased by the city isnt sup-
posed to be a money-making venture its a way to improve neigh-
borhoods and keep slum lords at bay, city officials say.
In 2012, the city purchased 14 houses through the Macomb County
tax foreclosure program and demolished four.
Work is finally complete at 21601 Bayside purchased for $19,980
and currently listed for $149,900. The $80,000 rehab budget includes
a new kitchen, HVAC system, roof, electrical rewiring and complete
renovation of the kitchen and main floor bathroom.
A $152,000 offer for the house, appraised for $128,000, was accept-
ed by city council Monday. The offer, submitted by a current St. Clair
Shores resident, is contingent on the sale of his current house which
is expected to close Nov. 20. Three offers were submitted.
A new garage was added to the 54-by-201 lot along with a new
driveway and patio slab. Other upgrades include refinished hard-
wood floors, basement repairs and corrections to the handiwork
done by the previous owner.
Councilman Chris Vitale, who sits on the mayor-appointed sub-
committee to oversee rehab projects along with Councilman Tony
Tiseo, City Manager Phil Ludos and Community Development and
Inspection Director Chris Rayes, opened up the house to the St. Clair
Shores Connection to view the results.
I would buy this house, Vitale said, proudly standing on the new
front porch.
Neighbor Dan Bigelow is just as pleased.
Its come from tear it down to what it is today, the four-year resi-
dent said, adding he had been inside the house prior to the city pur-
chasing it.
Of neighborhood inconvenience during construction, Bigelow said
he cant complain in the least.
He was contemplating attending an open house scheduled last
Sunday to take a look inside.
Vitale said an open house is now a requirement for all city-owned
properties undergoing rehabilitation.
Next on the docket is a house on Deizel just about ready for the
market. For photos and story, stay tuned to the St. Clair Shores
Connection.

4A ST. CLAIR SHORES CONNECTION THURSDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2013
Students from Lake
Shore High School joined
exchange students from
China and Germany for
the districts fourth annu-
al International Summit
at t he Tayl or
International School.
The event brought to-
gether students for a day
of learning, conversation
and fun, Assistant
Superintendent Donald
Kling said.
Its really a way for
these students to get to-
gether and talk, he said.
Talk about the differenc-
es in cultures and the
similarities.
A question-and-answer
session, along with other
organized activities,
helped encourage dia-
logue, while tours of the
dormitory and lunch fea-
turing dishes from all
three countries were also
part of the days activi-
ties.
This is something that
the students really enjoy,
Kling said. They have so
many differences cultur-
ally, sure, but ultimately
theyre still kids. Theres
a lot of common ground
there and that comes out
quickly. Before too long
theyre having these
great conversations with
one another and really
having a good time.
In years past, the sum-
mit concluded after just
a half day, but this years
event stretched nearly
the entire school day.
Its something the stu-
dents wanted to hap-
pen, Kling said. We got
their feedback from last
year and that was one
thing that we heard a lot,
that it didnt last long
enough. So, this year we
extended the time to just
about an entire school
day.
Like last year, this
years summit brought
together students from
the districts three cul-
tures Germany, China
and the United States.
Kling says the district is
currently working on
adding Spain to the ros-
ter of exchange students
coming to Lake Shore,
and in the near future
they may also be part of
the International Summit
event.

Summit students take a tour of the dormitory at the Taylor International School.
Teens interested in tak-
ing up to 20 trips to the
slopes this season can join
the St. Clair Shores Ski
and Snow Boarding Club.
The club, open to all stu-
dents in grades six-12,
heads to Mt. Holly every
Friday, weather and condi-
tions permitting, at 4 p.m.
and returns at midnight.
Membership includes
transportation on a charter
bus, which leaves St. Clair
Shores Civic Arena, the
first ski or snow board les-
son, supervision and other
perks for $180 a season,
according to longtime
chaperone Mike Fremont.
The club averages 10
trips per season and offers
discounted lift tickets and
rental equipment.
Fremont said several
amenities set this club
apart from the typical
school club. First, he said,
schools typically offer four
to five trips and return by
10 p.m. The St. Clair
Shores club takes up to 20
trips and doesnt leave the
slopes until 11 p.m.
Its nice when the other
school clubs leave. Weve
got the hill to ourselves,
Fremont said.
Another bonus is the
charter buses have a rest-
room facility and some
have DVD players, allow-
ing club members to watch
a movie during the esti-
mated one-hour ride.
Parents also get a re-
duced rate if they tag along
in their own vehicles,
Fremont said.
Those that already know
how to ski are required to
demonstrate their skills to
Mt. Holly personnel and
are told which hills they
can use.
We dont do any of the
teaching, Fremont said,
adding the club is open to
beginners and experi-
enced skiers and snow
boarders.
The first trip can be as
early as the second Friday
in December.
If theres snow and
Mount Hollys open, were
going, Fremont said.
Another advantage to
the club is theres no mini-
mum participation re-
quired. The bus is paid for
and goes regardless of the
number of people that sign
up for a particular trip.
Fremont also suggests
club memberships be giv-
en for holiday gifts.
It can be a tough sell to
the parents that havent
skied, but those that have
they see its a good deal,
he said.
Were trying to get
them out for exercise other
than just exercising their
thumbs, he quipped.
Being a member of the
club is also a right of pas-
sage for teens, he said.
We dont hear from
them unless someone gets
in trouble, he said. They
are pretty much on their
own, but they must stay
within the facility.
Members are allowed to
pack a lunch or snacks,
but cannot eat on the bus.
For those that prefer to
purchase food or drinks,
Fremont said there are
plenty of opportunities at
Mount Holly. A meal, he
said, can be purchased for
about $10.
If the club gets enough
participants, Fremont
would like to hold a ski
swap among members
who can either sell or do-
nate their used outgrown
equipment. He also said
Mount Holly holds its own,
typically in November.
For more information
about the club, call Gary
Sopfe, ski club coordina-
tor, at (586) 445-5350.

Know Your Skin
By Lisa A. Manz-Dulac, MD
Te departure of warm weather
causes certain skin conditions to
fourish. One such condition is
keratosis pilaris, or KP.
Afecting mostly teenagers
and young adults, KP is a very
common and harmless condition.
KP presents as small bumps that
have a dry sandpaper feeling.
Tey can be red or brownish in
color. Upper arms, cheeks and
thighs are the most frequent
sites for the condition. While the
condition may also be present in
babies and persist into adult life,
keratosis pilaris is uncommon in
elderly people.
Keratosis pilaris is caused by
tiny skin plugs which block hair
openings, forming a horny plug
of the hair follicle. Tis also
widens the pores making them
appear more obvious.
Keratosis pilaris tends to be
more severe and can sometimes
itch during the winter months
or other times of low humidity
when skin dries out. However, it
can persist throughout the year.
KP is not curable and
treatment of KP is not necessary.
Moisturizers may help with
the dryness and associated itch.
Topical prescription creams
may also be recommended by
your dermatologist. Exfoliation
with an exfoliating cloth or
Clarisonic body brush may also
help minimize the appearance
of the bumps. While KP can be
efectively treated, therapy must
be continued on a regular basis or
the KP recurs.
To learn more about
Keratosis Pilaris, contact your
dermatologist or call us at
Eastside Dermatology, Dr. Lisa
A. Manz-Dulac and Associates.

Phones swiped
Police are looking for
the person or persons re-
sponsible for throwing a
cinder block through the
glass front door of the
T-Mobile store on 9 Mile
and stealing 3 iPhones
Saturday, Oct. 20, at about
4:10 a.m.
Upon investigating the
burglary, police found
shattered glass both in-
side and outside the door.
Once inside, muddy foot-
prints were spotted near
the Apple iPhone display
case, the arm that holds
the phones was broken
and the phones missing.
A chunk of cinder
block, of which police
suspect was used to break
the front door, was on top
of the display case.
The store manager was
contacted and she noted
the cash registers and
some cabinets had been
rummaged but nothing
was missing other than
the three phones.
Surveillance cameras
were on the property and
copies of which are being
sent to the police depart-
ment for review.
Nature calls
A 29-year-old Roseville
woman imprisoned at the
St. Clair Shores Police
Department made a run
for it after completing a
visit to the restroom.
The woman, held on a
warrant from 40th
District Court on a third
degree home invasion
charge, requested a more
private area to address
personal needs and broke
away from a police officer
escorting her back to her
cell. The woman headed
out the west entry door of
the police department
and into the parking lot.
The officer gave chase,
assisted by a sergeant and
another officer working at
the front desk.
The woman headed
southbound into an area
off the parking lot sur-
rounded by a privacy
fence. As she began to
climb it, one officer
grabbed her around the
waist and another
grabbed her leg and wres-
tled her to the ground.
The woman tucked her
arms underneath her to
avoid being handcuffed.
One officer hit her in
the back of her arm with
a closed fist once or
twice and the woman re-
lented. She was hand-
cuffed and returned to
her cell.
Tire thieves
A 23- year- ol d
Southfield man was
pushed out of the get-
away car after he and
three other black males
attempted to steal the
tires off a Cadillac CTS in
the Don Gooley lot on 9
Mile.
A security guard con-
tacted police a 8:13 p.m.
Saturday Oct. 20, report-
ing four men were at-
tempting to steal the
tires. The men, wearing
ski masks and gloves,
tried to escape under a
chain link fence later dis-
covered to have been de-
tached from a post, al-
lowing the suspects to ex-
it to a silver Chrysler mini
van.
As the vehicle headed
northbound through the
parking lot, the
Southfield man was
ejected from the mini
van, which continued
west on Nine Mile.
The Southfield man
ran across 9 Mile toward
the Bow Wow Dog
Resort. An officer giving
chase on foot found a
black ski mask in the
Dumpster behind the
business.
Shortly thereafter, an
employee at the Mobil gas
station at the corner of 9
Mile and I-94 called police
to report a man meeting
the suspects description
and sweating profusely,
saying he was jacked,
asking for directions to
Detroit.
The man was later
found and arrested while
walking along the I-94
shoulder near Shady
Lane.
Officers on the scene at
the car dealership found
lug nuts and cement
blocks on which the vehi-
cle was raised. A car jack
was also found.
A surveillance tape of
the dealership is being
handed over to police.
Police are seeking in-
formation on the three
other suspects.

Bill Oliver of Atlanta
would like help with an
identification issue.
He and his family, de-
scendents of former
Grosse Pointer Felicitas
Voss, have 70 fading pho-
tos of nameless faces, ex-
cept for Voss.
I have a photograph al-
bum with photos from
about 1910 taken probably
at the Academy of the
Sacred Heart, which in-
clude my mother, Felicitas
Voss, and many of her
friends, his e-mail began.
Moms best friend was
Gertrude Healy, daughter
of D.J. Healy of the DJ
Healy Shops, and she
must be in one of those
photos. She comes up in
the social register when
Googled. Would love to
find out which one she is.
The album was discov-
ered in the spring by
Olivers oldest sister,
Evelyn. The photos, now a
faded sepia, were glued in
place and taken between
1900 and 1910, he said.
They (the photos) were
fascinating. Although
mom could be recognized
in many, to find out who
else was in them and when
and where they were tak-
en, required lifting them
carefully from the pages
with the hope that some
clues could be found on
the back." Although none
were found, it could be
seen that of the 70, 26 cen-
tered around his mother
and her friends.
Voss is not alone in seek-
ing information. For years,
families have taken photos
and dropped them into
boxes, secured some in al-
bums and others were
framed sans dates, names
and places.
The photos fade and
those who have informa-
tion about the photos for-
get or die.
To preserve those mem-
ories for another genera-
tion, Grosse Pointe pho-
tographer John A. Martin
provides advice. He said
when cataloguing photos,
never write on the back or
on the CD or DVD con-
taining photos. The ink
can break down, leak onto
the photo and or fade.
Using an indelible pen on
a CD can destroy the data,
Martin said. Also, dont
use a sticky note because
the glue can destroy the in-
formation either on a pho-
to or CD. Instead, he ad-
vised, write on the CDs
case and store the infor-
mation a second time on a
hard drive.
For photos, the best
thing to do is write the
name on a paper with a
pen. Frame the photo with
the paper behind it, he
said.
Martin went on to say,
people should emulate an
archivist and think about
where pictures are stored.
All boxed photographs
should be stored in a dark,
cool and dry place.
If its real humid and
photos are stacked up, the
humidity will affect the
emulsion and will destroy
the photos, he said.
Rather than storing pho-
tos in the attic, place them
in a room with a tempera-
ture of 65 to 70 degrees

Former Grosse
Pointe resident
Bill Oliver
needs help
identifying
people in pho-
tos that include
his mother,
Felicitas Voss.
The photos are
from about
1910, he said,
and probably
taken at the
Academy of the
Sacred Heart.
At top, Voss is
on the lower
left.

with 50 percent humidity.
Martin urges using a de-
humidifier for preserva-
tion purposes.
There are things a pro-
fessional is able to do to re-
store the not-too-faded im-
ages, but, once the photos
images have faded beyond
recognition, there is no
way to bring them back,
he said.
The photographic pro-
cess, from the camera to
paper, has improved tre-
mendously since the late
18th century when pho-
tography began, though
the general principle re-
mains the same, he contin-
ued. Treating the photos,
whether on paper or digi-
tal, should be done with
thought.
Keeping photos out of
direct sunlight and using
high quality glass in front
of framed photos is a way
to preserve memories.
Protecting it does cost
more with the UV protec-
tion built in (the glass), he
said.
The best way to pre-
serve images is to create a
CD, store it on a hard drive
and have a backup, just as
a precaution because, he
said, everything has the
potential to loose data.
So it is with Oliver. He
has the images but little
written data for his mother
who was born in 1891 in
Cincinnati. In 1905, her fa-
ther moved the family to
Detroit to build a small
factory and 20 houses for
his employees in Delray at
the intersection of Voss
Street and West Jefferson.
Growing up, the Vosss
playmates were the Stroh
and Ford children.
