Managerial Economics
Economics for real-world business management
Resources are scarce so how do you negotiate with your fellow managers for more money or new staff? How do you select the best candidate from a pool of applicants? How do you reward your workers for good performance, and how do you pay them: per hour or for the products they produce? Managerial Economics is about using economic theories to optimise in-company business practices. In contrast to management studies and uniquely to this specialisation you take an abstract, meta-level approach. You examine problems from a birds-eye view, placing them in the broader theoretical context of the class of problems to which they belong, then connecting them to certain classes of solutions that can be implemented in practice.

Asset Pricing
Determining asset prices and optimal investments
What determines the price of financial assets? How do you allocate investments in order to optimise returns and risk exposure? If these are the kinds of questions you want to answer, you should consider becoming a specialist in asset pricing. Asset pricing is about understanding the factors in price formation of financial assets, including what drives return, risk, correlations and others. In volatile global markets, one can invest in an enormous variety of financial assets with differing risk properties. Financial institutions need specialists in asset pricing because a lot of these financial assets appear on bank balance sheets. Moreover, financial institutions sell products, like mutual funds, whose risk and return behaviour needs to be well understood and managed for clients.

Specialisation
Actuarial Sciences
Your passport to accreditation as a qualified actuary
Do you look at finance from both a liability and an asset perspective? Do you have what it takes to manage investment proactively while mitigating risks? Actuarial Sciences is one of only three such specialisations in the Netherlands. It incorporates the changing role of actuaries: while traditional actuaries focused on mitigating risks, modern actuaries look at market demand and decide how to optimise return on investment. This requires a balanced view of the interaction between assets and liabilities. Completion of this specialisation reduces the requirements of a follow-up programme offered by the Dutch Actuarial Institute, which gives the formal title of Actuary. This includes taking two courses from the bachelors programme (optional for those that do not want to pursue this possibility). With an official Actuary qualification, you will be in extremely high demand the world over. The programme is also recognized by the German Actuarial Society.
Career prospects
Most graduates of this specialisation do go on to become qualified actuaries. Given the current shortage of actuaries, there is huge demand so much so that the ABP and AZL pension funds approached Maastricht University with a request to create this specialisation. With this qualification, however, it is also possible to perform any role investigating large sets of data, often in the banking or insurance sectors.

Econometrics
Fast and accurate responses to economic and financial developments
Are you fascinated by macroeconomic developments? Does asset liability management interest you? Do you want to learn how to predict future financial and economic developments based on your analysis of past patterns? Apply for a specialisation in Econometrics to find out how. The demand for econometricians in todays complex economic climate is enormous. Large organisations need people who are able to manage resources and react quickly and effectively to changes in the market. Industries, banks, insurers, governmental and commercial organisations all need to adapt to market events, manage risks and predict the implications of their decisions quickly. The specialisation focuses on statistical analysis of economic data, finance including financial theory and asset liability management.
Career prospects
This specialisation is great training to become a top analyst. The skills that you will acquire through this specialisation are particularly useful in pension and investment funds where data is used to model how a given portfolio will develop over time.

Mathematical Economics
Understanding the why behind economic problems
Ever wondered why economic developments play out the way they do? Do you enjoy creating models and theories in order to solve problems? Are you the kind of person who wants to understand the why behind the issue? Then why not consider the Mathematical Economics specialisation? Managers must make decisions about the internal and external organisation of the company and its finances. Mathematical economics can help you do this strategically by using mathematical methods to weigh your options. The Mathematical Economics specialisation uses theory to model abstract ideas and solve real-world problems. The specialisation focuses on Game Theory and Equilibrium Theory, including industrial organisation.
Career prospects
A qualification in Mathematical Economics gives you the potential to be a top economic analyst. The skills you learn will be invaluable in any industry. The ability to analyse problems quickly and accurately is one shared by the best managers, meaning you also have the potential to be recruited to top management positions in the future.

Using technology to find solutions

The specialisation includes the opportunity to combine an eight-week internship with your masters thesis a unique blend of theoretical research and practical experience.
