You take courses from both faculties and your thesis is co-supervised by a staff member from each. Actuarial Sciences
Your passport to accreditation as a qualified actuary
Do you look at finance from both a liability and an asset perspective? Do you have what it takes to manage investment proactively while mitigating risks? Actuarial Sciences is one of only three such specialisations in the Netherlands. It incorporates the changing role of actuaries: while traditional actuaries focused on mitigating risks, modern actuaries look at market demand and decide how to optimise return on investment. This requires a balanced view of the interaction between assets and liabilities. Completion of this specialisation reduces the requirements of a follow-up programme offered by the Dutch Actuarial Institute, which gives the formal title of Actuary. This includes taking two courses from the bachelors programme (optional for those that do not want to pursue this possibility). With an official Actuary qualification, you will be in extremely high demand the world over. The programme is also recognized by the German Actuarial Society.

This specialisation is also suitable for people:

working for an insurance company or pension fund who want further qualifications already doing actuarial work who require an official actuarial qualification coming from a non-actuarial field but wanting to specialise in actuarial studies

Career prospects
Most graduates of this specialisation do go on to become qualified actuaries. Given the current shortage of actuaries, there is huge demand so much so that the ABP and AZL pension funds approached Maastricht University with a request to create this specialisation. With this qualification, however, it is also possible to perform any role investigating large sets of data, often in the banking or insurance sectors.

What will you learn?

to break financial problems down into smaller components in order to solve them to use a two-sided approach to look at problems from an asset and liability point of view to demonstrate financial expertise in the pension and insurance sectors

Graduates have found positions in:

insurance companies pension funds consultancy firms
