Four jailed
for fatally
assaulting
theft suspect
KOTA BARU: Four men were sen-
tenced to eight years jail each by
the High Court yesterday after they
pleaded guilty to causing the death
of a suspected snatch thief three
years ago.
They are fish rearer Mohd Za-
wawi Zainal Abidin, 31, farmer Mohd
Sufian Shafin, 25, Bhahira Fakri, 28,
and labourer Maizal Yusmawi Mohd
Yusof, 27, all of Tumpat.
Judge Datuk Azman Hussin
ordered the jail sentences to be
served from the dates of their arrest
– Oct 21, 2006 for Mohd Zawawi,
Nov 7, 2006 for Mohd Sufian, March
24, 2007 for Bhahira, and Oct 9 last
year for Maizal Yusmawi.
The four were initially charged
with murdering Mohd Nasir Ab
Rahman, 30, between 11.30pm and
midnight on Oct 19, 2006, by the
road side at Kampung Kok Pasir,
Palekbang, Tumpat (see photo on
page 3).
The prosecution later offered
an alternative and lesser charge of
causing death which, on conviction
under Section 304(a) of the Penal
Code, carries a jail sentence of up to
20 years and a fine.
According to the facts of the case,
Mohd Nasir was talking to some
friends when he was assaulted by
Bhahira and Maizal Yusmawi, before
Mohd Zawawi and Mohd Sufian
arrived in a van and kicked him.
The four men then took Mohd
Nasir to Kampung Berlian in
Palekbang, where they stopped at a
grocery shop owned by Mohd Zawa-
wi’s grandmother, Mek Yam Seman,
and asked her to verify whether
Mohd Nasir was the man who had
robbed her a few months earlier.
Police who arrived at the scene
found Mohd Nasir in a serious
condition and sent him to Universiti
Sains Malaysia Hospital, where he
died because of subdural haemor-

HOUSEMANSHIP FOR MEDICAL GRADS DOUBLED TO TWO YEARS

UTRAJAYA: The Health Min-
istry has doubled the duration
of housemanship for medical
graduates to two years to ensure
they start off their career as a medical
doctor on a strong footing.

Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican said
previously housemanship was
for only a year in three compul-
sory disciplines in either medicine,
paediatrics, surgery or medicine,
surgery and obstetrics and gynae-
cology (O&G) – with four months in
each posting.

Now it is compulsory for them
to be trained in six disciplines –
general medicine, paediatrics,
surgery, orthopaedics, O&G and
emergency medicine with four
months in each posting over two
years, he told a seminar on house-
manship training in Malaysia.
He said all housemen will be
employed on scale UD41 (RM1,999-
RM5,317) and upon successful
completion of their housemanship
training, they will be confirmed
in service and promoted to UD44
(RM3,028-RM5,570) scale.

be guided, monitored and assessed
by specialists not only on their
knowledge and skills but also their
attitudes towards the profession.
“If their performance was not up
to the standard, the period of training
could be extended,” he said.
He said at present the Malaysian
Medical Council recognises 366
medical colleges both local and over-
seas and they collectively produce
about 4,000 doctors a year.
Mohd Ismail said he has instruct-

He said a recent study in 28
general hospitals revealed that 67.8%
of trainee doctors found their training
very stressful and 53% had thought
of quitting due to the stress.
The survey also showed that the
highest level of stress encountered
was related to working hours and
workload and 30-40% of them did not
have time for social or recreational
activities, 21.8% required counselling
and 5.8% needed specific treatment,
