SHAH ALAM: The DNA of an unknown
male was found on political secretary
Teoh Beng Hock’s blazer and belt and
efforts are on-going to find a match from
among 102 people, it was revealed at the
inquest into his death which started at
the Coroner’s Court here yesterday.
Government-appointed lawyer Tan
Hock Chuan, who is assisting Coroner
Azmil Muntapha Abas in the high-pro-
file inquest, made the revelation after the
court came back from a short morning
recess to allow Azmil time to consider
an application made by Gobind Singh
Deo, who is acting for Teoh’s family, for
a postponement.
Tan said they had handed over two
sets of copies of documents – covering
the autopsy, toxicology, photographs,
forensic, CCTV and DNA report – yes-
terday to Gobind and Malik Imtiaz Sar-
war, who is representing the Selangor
government.
In explaining delays in some docu-
ments, Tan said there were two profiles
in the first DNA report. They are:

the back outer side of the blazer consist-
ing a mixture of male DNA types from

two individuals, one of whom was
Teoh.

taken from the tear region of the
waist belt worn by Teoh consisting
a mixture of a male DNA type and
indicating concordance with Teoh’s
blood stain specimen and at least one
unknown male contributor.
Tan said swabs were taken from
102 persons to identify the unknown
male person.
“I was told the chemist’s results of
90 people are ready and further tests
will be conducted on the remaining
12 persons. I was also told by the
investigating officer two persons had
refused to give their DNA samples.”
Tan said this is “holding back the
second DNA report”.
Gobind then stood up and asked
whether any of the 90 specimens
matched the DNA of the “unknown
male 1” as stated in the report.
Tan replied that this was for the
experts to say.
Later, Gobind told reporters the
disclosure on the DNA will be inves-
tigated, hopefully over the weekend.
“This will be very telling in the
course of the inquest and we now
have time to send the reports to our
own experts.”
He also clarified that the two
persons who have yet to give their
DNA samples were only informed on
Tuesday afternoon, and that he was
sure they would cooperate if police
were to call them again.
He said one of the two is Kajang
municipal councillor Tan Boon Wah,
who was allegedly the last person to
see Teoh alive.
Teoh, who was an aide to exco
member Ean Yong Hian Wah, was
found dead on July 16 at the fifth level
of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam, which
houses the state office of the Malaysian
Anti-Corruption Commission on the
14th floor. He had been questioned as
a witness over allegations of misap-
propriation of state funds.
The hearing has been postponed
to Aug 5.

PKFZ ‘letters
of support’

KUALA LUMPUR: Parliament’s Public
Accounts Committee (PAC) is unable
to conclude that the four letters of
support for the Port Klang Free Zone
(PKFZ) project issued by two former
cabinet ministers are not government
guarantees, its chairman Datuk Seri
Azmi Khalid said yesterday.
After hearing from former trans-
port minister Tan Sri Chan Kong Choy
for about two hours over the contro-
versial RM4.9 billion project, Azmi
said the question of whether the
letters are government guarantees
or not is subject to legal opinion.
“Although Chan and his predeces-
sor Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik had denied
the letters were guarantees, these
are only their opinion, Azmi told
reporters.
“We have different opinions in the
legal aspect and we are not the body
to determine (this). It is up to other
bodies to decide.”
Chan issued three letters of sup-
port, in 2004, 2005 and 2006, which
confirmed that the ministry “shall at
all times in the future ensure that
Port Klang Authority (PKA) is in the
position to meet their liabilities in
respect of the repayment amount”.
The first letter of support was is-
sued on May 28, 2003 by Ling, and he
had also told the PAC two weeks ago
the letter was not a guarantee and
that it had no financial implication
on the government. The four letters
of support have been uploaded, to-
gether with other 19 appendices to
the PricewaterhouseCoopers report
on July 15, on the PKFZ information
portal (pkfznews.com.my).
Azmi said Chan, who was ac-
companied by his legal adviser, was
responsive and cooperative to the
committee and most of the ques-
tions posted to the ex-minister were
on the letters of support.
“His stand, which had also been
explained in Parliament as well as by
the Finance Ministry, was that these
letters were not a form of guarantee
but merely support,” he said.
