01. PURPOSE
This report describes the soil investigation campaign which consists of borehole, cone penetration test (CPT) and test
pit for foundation analysis of factory, office, walkway and others for Sweet Dreams project.
02. GENERAL
The soil investigation campaign was located at area of Bali Culinary Pastry School, Beraban village, Tabanan district,
Bali. The site is located about 18 km North-west of Bali’ capital, Denpasar city, and is reachable by road via an asphalt-
paved provincial road. The site is adjacent Tanah Lot at about 5km to the west. Location is shown in Figure 1
03. RESPONSIBILITIES
PT. Munjo Geoteknika Utama (MGU) has been commisioned by PT Enrique Indonesia to carried out soil investigation
campaign.
SNI1726:2012 is an Indonesia’s standard for earthquake resistance design procedures for buildings and non-buildings
GWL means ground water level which measured during borehole drilling activity. This measurement for shallow ground
water level which categorized a confined GWL because it can fluctuate level due to influence by rain infiltration.

The location of the soil investigation consists of plains and valleys with small rivers which lead to the coast of Nyanyi. The
site composed by Latosol soil formed from the weathering of sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. The material
composed of yellowish-brown silty sand CLAY with some gravel.
The assessment of geology condition was based on review regional geological maps published by Geological Research
and Development Centre (GRDC) Bandung – Geological Map of Bali and Nusa Tenggara by MM Purbo, H Samudra, at
al., 1998. The regional geology of Bali is shown in Figure 2.

07.1 SEISMIC
Figure 3 is a generalized seismic zone map 2010 presenting peak horizontal ground acceleration (PGA) as a percentage
of the acceleration of gravity (g). The hazard level depicted represent the PGA associated with a 10 percent probability
of being exceeded in 50 years (return period of 475 years) for bedrock conditions. The peak acceleration at base rock
range from 0.25 – 0.3 g. Based on SNI1726-2012, the investigation area can be classified as SC (hard soil, dense and
soft rock)

Liquefaction and seismic settlement are secondary effects associated with seismic shaking. Liquefaction is a
phenomenon in which loose to medium dense, saturated, granular materials undergo matrix rearrangement, develop high
pore water pressure, and lose shear strength because of cyclic ground vibrations induced by earthquakes. This
rearrangement and strength loss are followed by a reduction in bulk volume of the liquefied soils. The effects of
liquefaction can include the loss of bearing capacity below foundations, settlement in level ground, and instability in areas
of sloping ground (also known as lateral spreading). Liquefaction is generally considered to occur within 15 m of the
ground surface and is often limited to depths of 10 m or less when evaluating deformations that are more significant.
Seismic settlement results from the densification of granular soils during earthquake-induced shaking in dry or partially
saturated soils.
Based on present SPT value evaluation (generally N-SPT value >50 and shallow GWL not found) for liquefaction and
seismic settlement, the site is considered have no potential to liquefaction.
The location and coordinate of soil investigation shown below in table 2 and figure 4. The coordinates and elevation were
measured as local coordinates.
08.2 Drilling
Drilling locations were shown in Figure 4. The borehole records are given in Appendix 2 - Borehole Records.
Drilling equipment was used for the project was rotary drilling machine (TOYO) and performed with continuous coring
technique/ full coring by dry rotary method. In drilling process, a core barrel was lowered to the bottom of the borehole by
drill rods.
A 1.5m length core barrel of AW-size drill rod (73 mm) was attached and rotated hydraulically by the drill rig. A tungsten
drill bit attached to the core barrel was used for drilling. Core samples recovered from the borings were putted inside
plastic bags, place in wooden boxes. The retrieved core sample was then stored in core boxes
Insitu testing carried out was standard penetration test (SPT). The Standard Penetration Testing (SPT) was carried out
in each borehole at about 1.0 to 1.5 m intervals in accordance to ASTM D1586 to determine the natural bearing resistance
of the subsoil for the purpose of design.
In this method the standard penetration test using the split barrel sample to obtain the resistance of soil to penetration (N
value). The test was conducted by a falling hammer weighing 63.5 kg was raised 0.76 m and dropped onto an anvil which
drove a small diameter split spoon sampler into the soil / rock being tested. The method is applicable to all soil types. It
was most often used in granular material to provide in place bearing strength.
For calculation of N value, the blow count was recorded for each 75 mm penetration for a total penetrated length of 450
mm. The first 150 mm was generally taken as a seating drive. The blow count for the last 300 mm was taken as the N -
value.
In rock or very dense soils, if the blow count has achieved> 50 in 75 mm, the test is stopped and the N value was
estimated by extrapolation for an equivalent 300 mm penetration.
The drilling depth was terminated when SPT Values more than 60 for three times successively.
The SPT N - values are shown on the borehole records in Appendix 2 – Borehole Records
Some representative undisturbed samples (UDS) could not available due to Shelby tube was difficult to penetrate stiff
cohesive soils and sometime loosen to retrieve sand soils. The disturbed samples (DS) then were collected and obtained
from the core for purpose of laboratory soil classification besides undisturbed samples. Type of samples retrieved during
drilling each borehole was shown at Appendix 2 – Borehole Records
Disturbed samples were normally preserved immediately after being recovered in double layered heavy polyethylene
bags sealed to form an airtight bag to properly contain the disturbed sample and prevent moisture loss.
A Total of 7 No. of Cone penetration tests have been carried out by one 2.5 tonne capacity cone rigs using a Begemann
Cone. The tests were carried out to refusal (qc > 150 kg / cm 2 ) and measured end resistance ( qc ), Local Skin Friction
(qf ) and Friction Ratio ( qf / qc = Fr ). The CPT test was carried out in accordance to ASTM D3441.
The cone test data has provided valuable information in support of the borehole / trial pit data regarding geology and soil
strength. Cone data interpretation results include soil type, equivalent blow count, friction angle and undrained shear
strength.
Laboratory testing will be carried out on soil and rock samples in our laboratory in Bandung.
Laboratory testing will be carried out to ASTM Standards and will include:
Classification Tests - Natural Moisture Content, Atterberg Limits and Particle Size Distribution, Specific Gravity
Strength Tests - unconsolidated undrained triaxial tests
Consolidation Tests.
Earthworks tests Combined Compaction – CBR
Latosol soil consists of stiff to very stiff, yellowish brown, sandy Silty CLAY, some places found gravel found with
thickness about 2 to 6 m.
Coastal deposit consists of dense to very dense, dark grey, grayelly clayey silty SAND, coarse grained with
thickness about 6 to 10 m.
Buyan-Bratan-Batur Volcanic formation (Qpbb) consists of strong, brownish grey to dark grey to grey, volcanic
rock.lava, fine grained which found at 12 m depth from existing ground surface.
Ground water level was not found during borehole drilling activity.
Soil parameter data is taken from all field data in the form of N-SPT data, the value of cone (qc) tip and laboratory data
which are then collected and divided according to the type of soil layer. Determination of each soil parameter is based on
the highest average value for each type of soil layer.
The Undrained shear strength apart from the Triaxial UU data is also taken from the N-SPT data correlation using the
formula from Bowles, 1997 .:
qu = 12N or Su = 6N
For the value of internal friction angle also taken from the N-SPT value which is correlated with the method as follows.

Table 5 Soil Design Parameter Interpretation
The design parameters used to determine ultimate bearing capacity are given in Table 3.
The ultimate bearing capacity and allowable bearing pressure based on a factor of safety = 3 obtained from analysis have
been summarized in Table 6.2 for each building area.
It should be noted that the allowable bearing pressure is independent of settlement which is the main design constraint
for the design of shallow foundations.

Unsoaked CBR laboratory on sandy Silty CLAY samples shows CBR value is 14.12%. It can be concluded that existing
soil surface layer is quite good quality foundation for road and hardstandings.
The development site is for factory and tourism; thus, it predicted the traffic load less than 10-15 tonne trucks. For
preliminary pavement thickness purposes, the road pavement can consist of 50 mm thick of bitumen hotmix asphalted,
250mm gravelly sand, and existing soil layer (sandy Silty CLAY).
10. CONCLUSIONS
In general, the site is underlain by 6 m thick of stiff to very stiff sandy silty CLAY and 7 m thick of dense to very dense
silty SAND. It means the site have a good bearing capacity to resist loadings from upper structure.
For building foundation design, it recommended to use 1.5 m width of square shallow footing foundation and placing at
1.5 m depth from existing ground level surface. To increase lateral resistance to resist lateral load, it recommended to
perform compaction in edge of footing after backfilling the foundation.
