What Rafael Nadal's Big Nasty can teach us about ergonomics.

Rafael Nadal is a pro tennis player. He's famous for his agility, power and sometimes even his sporty capripants. Through decades of intense practice and training, he has transformed his body into an athletic machine.An athletic machine with a Nemo-esque disproportion: Nadal's left arm looks like it was stolen from Thor, the God of Thunder, and his right arm could quite possibly belong to an accountant who enjoys sudoku. The difference in his muscle tone comes from his daily habits and workload. In other words, if his upper body was Destiny' Child, his racquet-arm would be Beyonc (doing all the hard work), and his right arm would be the other two (just along for the ride). This leads us to the ergonomics lesson of the day: The body will adapt to what you do most often. Whether it's stretching your earlobes, doing the splits, getting super fat, or running marathons, if you do something often enough, your body will make it easier for you to do that thing. This voodoo magic will benefit people who are regularly physically active, but it will clusterbomb* the people who sit all day. If Rafael decided to quit tennis and become a software engineer, his body would gradually adapt to its new circumstances. His left arm, which we'll call Big Nasty, would gradually shrink down to normal size, due to lack of use. After some time, Rafa's leg and core muscles would also shrink because his body will no longer think that it needs to sprint around the tennis court all day. His metabolism, which has been torching through calories during long days of training, will start to slow down. If your body thinks that you're going to be sedentary for the foreseeable future, there is no reason for it to run the metabolic furnace at full steam. After a while Rafael might not fit into those cutesy little Capris. The worst kind of sitting is prolonged sitting, especially when you're slouching. If you slouch, the muscles of your shoulders, neck and chest will conspire to make slouching your default setting. When you slouch, your shoulders and neck tend to slump forward. In time, the shoulder and chest muscles in the front of your body will start to shorten, while the muscles of your back become longer and weaker. The longer that you let your body marinate in this position, the worse it will get, and the harder it will be to get back to Sexyposture Town. If you'd like to be on the happier side of body adaptation, you need your body to think that it needs to be ready for vigorous activity. Unfortunately, the only way to do this is to actually perform vigorous activity as often as possible. You also need to tell your body that it needs to keep all of your muscles ready for action. You will do this by standing and walking as much as possible during the day. It certainly doesn't happen over night, but if you continue to work on staying active and building good posture, your body will adapt to make it easier for you.
