Les is rolling back into town

N SEPTEMBER 1971 the Bay City Rollers made their UK top 10 chart debut with Keep On Dancing. But the then-lead singer Nobby Clark and his fellow Scotsmen failed to cash in on their initial success and the Rollers were about to be written off as one-hit wonders. The change in fortunes came late in 1973 when Les, then aged 17, took over the front mans role. There followed nine successive top 10 hits including two chart-toppers between 1974 and 1976 and worldwide fame and fortune. Four decades later Les is still basking in that success and playing to packed audiences across the globe with his Bay City Roller Show. His current 41-date UK tour stops off at Scunthorpes Plowright Theatre on Friday, October 25 less than three weeks before his 58th birthday. It will be the second successive year the roller-boss has turned The Plowright into the Shang-A-Lang playhouse. The Bye Bye Baby charttopper makes

EDINBURGH-born musician Les McKeown, who visits Scunthorpe next week, will go down in history as the mastermind of one of the greatest comebacks in the history of British popular music. NICK COLE speaks to the Bay City Rollers frontman about his 40 years in the industry
no bones about the fact he has a soft spot for Scunthorpe and his local Tartan Army supporters. Five years ago he was a rate-payer in the town as a partner in a car auction firm on the Foxhills Industrial Estate but the business has since relocated to London. Looking forward to the return to Scunthorpe, he said: We will be performing a 130-minute show with all the hits thats longer than we did when the Rollers were at the height of their fame. When the musics in your blood you just cant stop. Last year at the Plowright, the fans were really up for it and we are ready for a repeat performance. We can guarantee the fans a fantastic night of fun and nostalgia. It will be a night of music and chat about the old days. Les revealed the band were named after Bay City in Michigan, USA a decision which paid big dividends when the Rollers became household names overnight in the States in 1975. He recalled how his life changed when on November 18, 1973 he was asked to replace Nobby in The Rollers. He said: It was a fantastic time to be growing up, touring the world and playing to audiences of 50,000 or more. In those days we turned the whole world tartan. It was a crazy time. Everywhere we went we were constantly mobbed and mass hysteria followed our every move. The international glamour was to continue until 1978 when the singer quit the band due to musical NOSTALGIA: Les with other members of The Bay City Rollers in their heyday. Main image, how he is today differences and pursued a solo career. That same year he met his future Japanese-born wife Peko. They now live in Hackney, London, with their 29-year-old son Jubei, who is a martial arts instructor and an accomplished musician in his own right. These days Les and his Rollers continue to look at the world through tartan-tinted glasses. He said: After the UK, we are due to give concerts in Russia, Japan, New Zealand and Australia in the new year. Its non-stop. In between the tours, the head roller continues work on the bands long-awaited 12-track new album as yet untitled and to be released in the new year Tickets for The Bay City Rollers Story cost 19.50.
