Pilgrim, Pilgrim, What Do You See? A Thanksgiving Shared Reading Pack!

Five Day Lesson Plan This unit is designed to be used in conjunction with a nonfiction Thanksgiving study.
Day 1Before reading, create a RAN or KWL chart with your students. Discuss the Thanksgiving holiday. Ask students what they know about the holiday, and record their answers on the chart. (Save this chart. You will add to it later.) Read the PowerPoint version of this story, or print and illustrate your own copy to read with the class for enjoyment. Pass out student books. Allow them to illustrate. Day 2Good readers point to the words. Use the PowerPoint or enlarged version of the story to practice pointing to the words. Reread the story together, and If possible have students practice this at the SMARTboard. Create Pilgrim Pointers. Cut a square for each student. Students then color the pilgrim hat and cut around the lines. Students glue the hat to a popsicle stick to use as a pointer while they independently read their story. Day 3Using SMARTboard or enlarged version of poem, practice finding words that rhyme with see. Have students circle the words that rhyme with see, or if using a paper version have students use highlighter tape to highlight the words that rhyme with see. Day 4Introduce Popcorn words. Popcorn words are words that POP up everywhere. Introduce the word I. Pass out highlighter tape to each student so they can highlight the word I in their own emergent reader. Day 5Reread the story, then practice retelling the story by making story puppets.
