Halloween Myth: Jack OLantern

Long time ago people believed that on Halloween ghosts came out of their graves and were looking for their homes. People didnt want any ghosts, so they dressed in scary costumes to frighten them. People also left food at their door for the ghosts, to stop them from coming inside the house. They also begun to carve pumpkins and put a candle inside it, hoping that the image of Jack Lantern could scare the ghosts!

nce upon a time, on Halloween "ight, a drunkard named Jack, had bad luck. He met the devil in a pub. The devil wanted to take Jacks soul, but Jack was clever and he decided to trick the devil. He said #$ll give you my soul if you buy me one last drink%. The devil changed himself into a coin but Jack didnt buy the drink. He &uickly put the coin into his pocket. 'nd, because Jack had a silver cross in his pocket, the devil could not change back. Jack said #$ will free you only if you promise me that you wont take my soul for the ne(t )* years%. The devil agreed and Jack freed him. Ten years later Jack was walking in the countryside when suddenly he met the devil. The devil wanted Jacks soul but Jack was clever and wanted to trick the devil again. He said+ #$ll give you my soul, but before that you must give me one apple from that apple tree%. The devil climbed up the tree to get the apple. Jack took out his knife from his pocket and carved a cross on the tree and the devil couldnt come down. The devil promised+ #$ will never ask for your soul again.% ,ears later, when Jack finally died , he couldnt go to Heaven, because during his lifetime he made a deal with the devil. He couldnt go to hell, because the devil promised never to take his soul. -o Jack asked the devil+ #.ut where can $ go/%, #.ack where you came from0% answered the devil. -o Jack came back from hell to earth. The way back from hell to earth was dark and windy. Jack asked the devil for a light to light his way back. The devil gave him a candle with the fire of hell. .ecause it was windy, and Jack was afraid that the light would die, he put the candle into a pumpkin which he was eating and he made a lantern. The legend says that since that day Jack has been walking in the dark with his lamp until now.
