Measuring and Improving Teaching and Learning Outcomes

Intensive 2013
MASTERCLASS BACKGROUND
A range of drivers are contributing towards the elevated importance of effective assessment and measurement of teaching quality in Universities around the world. An enhanced focus on student outcomes, heightened expectations from stakeholders such as industry and Government regulators as well as a highly competitive and internationalised marketplace are just a few of the critical factors affecting Higher Education institutions. Notably, the importance of teaching innovation, the rapid take-up of technology in course delivery and the increasing impact of University rankings are also key considerations which are shaping the management of University teaching performance. Against the backdrop of this dynamic landscape this unique course has been developed to assist University executives in refining evolved skill-sets and capabilities in the assessment, measurement and demonstration of teaching quality and impact. Designed for busy executives and condensed into one day, this practical course will provide key insights and knowledge which will assist your University with benchmarking quality standards across business lines, connecting process within the institution with robust student outcomes and producing well-rounded quality graduates

INTRODUCING YOUR FACILITATOR

Dr Craig McInnis PhD; BA (Hons); TPTC Director PhillipsKPA
With more than 20 years of experience in Higher Education research and consulting, Craig McInnis is recognised as one of the regions leading Higher Education experts and has a particular specialty in quality assurance, academic standards and the promotion of strong student learning outcomes. Having worked with Governments and Universities during his career from countries spanning Australia, USA, United Kingdom, Japan, New Zealand, Malaysia, Fiji, Ireland, Scotland, Portugal, and Vietnam - Craig brings to this event a wealth of experience in the design and evaluation of degree programmes, international benchmarking, changing academic work roles, quality assurance processes, and systemlevel approaches to the development of academic standards. Craig was Professorial Fellow (2006-2007), Professor (2000-2006), and Director of the Centre for the Study of Higher Education (1998-2004) at the University of Melbourne. He has held a number of international appointments at prestigious, high-ranking institutions; including Visiting Professor at the University of Lancaster, United Kingdom, and the Pennsylvania State University, USA. In 2006-7 he was Visiting Professor at the Research Institute for Higher Education, Hiroshima University, Japan. Craig was an elected member of the Governing Board of the European based Consortium of Higher Education Researchers (CHER) from 2002-2006. He has published widely on Higher Education, most recently the entry on the university student experience in the 2010 International Encyclopaedia of Education. In 2012 Craig co-authored a key publication for the Australian Government Office of Learning and Teaching entitled A Handbook for Executive Leadership of Learning and Teaching in Higher Education. This handbook has been distributed to all Australian and New Zealand ViceChancellors and Deputy Vice-Chancellors (Academic) and is currently being translated for use in Japan. Craigs advice is sought particularly on establishing and improving university performance evaluation systems to evaluate performance in learning and teaching, and the conditions needed to promote student engagement and learning outcomes. He played a key role in establishing the national agenda to improve the student experience, student retention and graduate outcomes including the redesign of the national Course Experience Questionnaire. His work with universities and faculties in strategic analysis and planning for the implementation of change and innovations is highly valued. Craig has conducted course reviews and advice on the design and evaluation of degree programmes in almost every major field of study, and across a wide range of university contexts. Craig has designed and facilitated professional development programs, workshops and coaching sessions for academic and administrative leaders at all levels of university operation in Australia and overseas.

TRAINING DELIVERY AND PRE-COURSE QUESTIONNAIRE

This workshop will be delivered using a three-tiered approach. The structure of each session is as follows: 1. Technical overview of the topic area under discussion 2. Practical application of management principles in the review of case studies, worked examples and interactive exercises 3. Discussion of subject outcomes and implementation problems Workshop participants will have the opportunity to include comments and questions about issues outlined in the program by way of a precourse questionnaire. This feedback will enable the course facilitator to adjust content accordingly. The seminar has limited places to allow for customisation, greater interactivity and for individual concerns to be addressed.
