Master Teacher
Graduate Highlight
Rachel Wolkenhauer used the skills she acquired as part of UFs Florida Master Teacher Initiative to engage her students and become a more effective teacher. The program partners with teachers at high-need schools to provide them with the opportunity to develop professionally and become master teachers, while earning a masters or education specialist degree free of charge. I had some nine-year-olds who had to take care of their families, Wolkenhauer said. Stories about a little girl losing her dog didnt connect with them at all.

Instead of reading about Polly and her poodle, I found articles about current topics online that they could read, she said. After completing the graduate program last year, Wolkenhauer decided to become a part of it and work with other teachers who are currently a part of the Florida Master Teacher Initiative. Wolkenhauer is now a doctoral student in the program.

Graduate Highlight
For more than two years, nothing occupied Shu-Hau Hsus mind more than hairy surfaces. He thought about how long the hairs should be, and how thick and how far apart. He tested them in the lab and observed them under a microscope. And all that thinking paid off, when Hsu helped create a hairy surface that was almost completely water-repellent. It scares the water away, said Hsu, who recently earned his Ph.D. in material sciences and engineering. Inspired by the tiny hairs found on spiders, Hsu and his advisor, UF materials engineering Professor Wolfgang Sigmund, developed a surface covered with synthetic hairs made from a plastic called polypropylene. The synthetic hairs each have a diameter of just a thousandth of a millimeter. The friction between a water droplet and the hairy surface is so small that it will not stick and just slips off, he said.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Candidates for the masters degree with thesis and for the EdD and PhD degrees are required to submit their final theses and dissertations electronically. More information is available at gradschool.ufl.edu/editorial/introduction.html, etd.helpdesk.ufl.edu OR from the Graduate School Editorial Office.

Computer Requirement
All students must have permanent computer access. Class assignments may require use of a computer. Registration can be done by computer and official university correspondence is often sent via e-mail. Basic computer competency is required for graduation. The university offers limited access to computers through its computer labs, but most students are expected to purchase or lease a computer capable of dial-up or network connection to the Internet, graphic access to the World Wide Web and productivity functions such as word processing and spreadsheets. Specific academic units can provide additional requirements and recommendations. General information is available through the student computer link on the UF home page.

Housing
For Graduate and Undergraduate Students with Families
Apartment accommodations on the University campus are available for students with families. Applicants must have applied to the University and have a UF ID number and are urged to apply as early as possible because of the demand for housing. See www.housing.ufl.edu/apply/grad.php

Single Graduate Students Graduate students are housed in graduate

and family housing villages or in the Keys Residential Complex (available to graduate and upper-division students). To be considered for assignment to the Keys Residential Complex, you need to complete a single-student residence hall housing application at www.housing.ufl.edu/apply/single.php To be eligible to continue living in the University housing, all resident students must make normal progress toward a degree as determined by their academic departments.

All services are free to students. For more information, stop by the Off-Campus Life Department in the Dean of Students Office, 202 Peabody Hall, or call (352)-392-1207.

Wildlife Reconnaissance
John Perry has spent the past four years fine-tuning an unmanned plane that is able to fly into dangerous situations, take hundreds of high-resolution pictures and make it out in one piece. But its missions arent to find weapons of mass destruction or enemy soldiers. Its mission is to collect data to be used for scientific research by wildlife biologists, ecologists and environmental experts.

When people think of drones, they think of bombs in Afghanistan, said Perry, a doctoral student at UFs School of Forest Resources and Conservation. But this is a civilian and scientific use for them. Perry focuses on the information gathered by the planes cameras equipped with GPS and sensors. The cameras photographs reveal valuable information for researchers, such as the number of alligators in a swamp. The best thing about it is its ability to go into dangerous situations that humans arent able to go into, said Perry, noting that planes crashes are a leading cause of death among wildlife biologists.

Shark Story
Felipe Carvalho is using satellite tags to track the migration of blue sharks across the entire South Atlantic Ocean. Sharks are highly-migratory species, said Carvalho, who recently earned a masters degree in fisheries and aquatic sciences. Blue sharks might be on the coast of the U.S. today, but on the coast of Spain a few months

Application Deadlines
Applications for admission can be submitted up to one year in advance; apply as early as possible to avoid delays. Prospective students should contact the academic unit at: http://gradschool.ufl.edu/students/college-department-links.html for application deadlines. Deadlines represent the final completion of the admissions file. Check with the academic unit for further details.

Transcript Requirements
Applicants must arrange to send official transcripts from each institution attended to the Office of Admissions and the academic unit. Former UF students do not need to request UF transcripts. Applicants who currently are enrolled at another institution must send updated transcripts as soon as grades for that term are available.

later. If we can better understand its migration ecology and oceanic habitat utilization, we can assist in its conservation. Carvalho said the tracking device records the sharks depth movements for 150 days, then pops off and floats to the surface, where it sends the information to a satellite. Many researchers and biologists are focusing their efforts on shark conservation because sharks are often caught in fisheries searching for tuna and swordfish in the Atlantic Ocean. Fishermen cut the fins off the shark to sell and throw the shark back into the ocean. Overfishing coupled with sharks slow reproductive rate puts them in a dangerous position.
