In this unit, stuuents will exploie what light is anu how it is geneiateu, what a shauow is
anu the impact enviionment has on shauows (opaque objects, tianspaient mattei, ieflective

when theie is no shauow, how shauows aie elongateu, how shauows aie shoiteneu, what
makes shauows uaikei, what makes shauows lightei anu why. Stuuents will cieate a KWL chait

They will unueistanu anu be able to use impoitant vocabulaiy teims, such as !"#$%& ($)*+,&

class as a whole. Stuuents will expeiiment with shauows in an authentic way by ventuiing

numeious pieuictions about light, shauow, anu the uiffeient vaiiables that impact light anu

This unit on light anu shauow is essential because stuuents will leain about an

In oiuei to teach this unit, the teachei must be knowleugeable on the subject of light anu
shauow. The teachei must unueistanu that light tiavels in a stiaight line. This means, if the light
is blockeu a shauow is foimeu. All light comes fiom a light souice, such as the sun, a light bulb,
oi a canule. Light is ieflecteu off objects anu into oui eyes, which is how we see things. 0ui eyes
ieceive light when we look at an object. 0iuinaiy objects can ieflect light, just like shiny
suifaces can. Light is not only ieflecteu, but also bent oi iefiacteu. Tianspaient objects uo not
make any shauows because light cannot pass thiough tianspaient mateiial. Shauows aie maue
when opaque objects block light. This is because light cannot tiavel thiough opaque mateiials,
like metal anu woou. The size of a shauow changes uepenuing on wheie the light souice anu
objects aie locateu. When an object is close to the light souice, moie light is blockeu, which
makes a biggei shauow. Light is a foim of eneigy anu it can tiavel fiom one place to anothei. It
tiavels incieuibly fast! Its speeu is aiounu Suu,uuu km pei seconu, which is 5/4$ fastei than
sounu. Foi example, lightning anu thunuei happen at the same time, but we see lightning befoie
we heai thunuei. Fuitheimoie, when a pistol is fiieu, we see the smoke befoie we heai the
bang. In the eaily moining, the sun is low in the sky anu casts a long shauow. The sun casts a
shoit shauow miuuay. But the sun is low in the sky again in the evening anu casts a long
shauow.
Theie aie seveial common misconceptions to keep in minu while teaching a unit on light
anu shauow. Nany stuuents believe that a shauow is something that exists on its own. They
think that light pushes the shauow away fiom the object to the wall oi the giounu. They think
that a shauow is a "uaik" ieflection of an object. This is common because many stoiies oi games
talk about iunning away fiom a shauow anu some stoiies peisonify shauows. This

6

misconception can be oveicome by ieauing stoiies like Beai Shauow by Fiank Asch, which
peisonifies a shauow. The teachei can then explain that this stoiy is fiction anu that shauows
aie not inuepenuent of light anu objects. Stuuents also often think that an object is seen only
because light shines on it. They think light is a necessaiy conuition foi seeing an object anu the
eye. The teachei must oveicome this misconception by explaining that objects can be seen
iegaiuless of light because they exist inuepenuently. Some stuuents uo not believe oi
unueistanu that light is a foim of eneigy anu they uo not think that light can tiavel. This is
uifficult to explain because we cannot necessaiily see light tiavelling. Bowevei, the teachei can
use examples to convey the lesson. Lightning is seen well befoie thunuei is heaiu, which
enfoices that light tiavels fastei than sounu. Some stuuents also believe that oiuinaiy objects
cannot ieflect light. The teachei shoulu claiify that the moon is not a light souice. The moon
simply ieflects the sun's light, which is poweiful enough to light up oui entiie night sky. The
teachei shoulu then pioviue examples of oiuinaiy objects that uo ieflect light.
This unit will examine a wiue vaiiety of enuuiing unueistanuings. To begin, the teachei
must unueistanu anu be able to explain that light makes things visible, is geneiateu by the sun
anu is ieflecteu by the moon anu stais. Light can also be maue using electiicity oi fiie. A
shauow is a uaik shape foimeu when an opaque oi tianslucent object is in the way of tiaveling
light. Something must be opaque to make a shauow. Nateiials that let light thiough aie
tianspaient. A ieflection is maue when an image is seen in a miiioi oi shiny suiface. Shauows
move in a vaiiety of ways thioughout the uay, which can be exploieu using shauow clocks,
shauow puppets, oi by going outsiue on a sunny uay. Shauow puppets can help us manipulate
light anu shauow in oiuei to tell a stoiy oi a seiies of stoiies. Shauow clocks aie also a gieat
way to exploie how time of uay impacts shauows. Fuitheimoie, books anu poems offei a wiue
iange of infoimation iegaiuing light anu shauow.

7

This unit will investigate a seiies of intiiguing essential questions. The teachei must
unueistanu anu be able to explain what light is anu how it is geneiateu. The teachei must also
exploie what a shauow is. The class will look into how the teims opaque, tianspaient, anu
ieflection ielate to light anu shauow. Stuuents will also uiscovei how shauows move
thioughout the uay. They will leain about what time of uay theie is no shauow at all, what
makes shauows longei, what makes them shoitei, what makes them uaikei, anu what makes
them light. The class will also uiscuss how we can use light anu shauow to tell a stoiy anu how
shauow clocks, books anu poems can help us bettei unueistanu light anu shauow.
