Introduction: Your Adventure Begins.

It has been a great Spring Break so far. With only three days left to relax, you feel the need to bask in some needed sunshine and take a brain break before the last part of your semester. Youre a University of Hawaii Graduate Educational Technology student and this has been a harder semester than most. As you stretch out on your couch, you feel a bit groggy from eating a huge breakfast of eggs, Portuguese sausage, fried Spam, all smothered in brown gravy. You try to stretch out, but your arms hit a pile of instructional design textbooks and academic journals that have been left sitting there since last Friday. You nudge it over the edge of the couch and watch as the pile crashes to the floor. The corner of an annoyingly bright neon-pink paper wedged between the pages of your textbook catches your eye. Lazily, you lean to reach for it. However, just as are about to pull it from the mess, your cell phone rings. You stop and decide what to do next.

If you ignore the phone call and reach for the paper, go to Page: 24 If you ignore the paper and answer the phone call, go to Page: 25 If you grab the slip of paper and your cell phone at the same time, go to Page: 26 ! "#$%&!(!

Chapter 1: Locate the Google Application Suite

! Arriving at the Innovation Center at 10:00 am, you notice that the classroom is already filled with many other people who signed up for the seminar. So much for coming early Looking around, you are so surprised at how many people have decided to attend the series, especially during Spring Break. As you scan the room, you see a few familiar faces from campus but no one you know. Surprisingly, not a single person from your cohort is in the room. You know you have to do a semester/end group project, so you intend to take really good notes to share with your classmates once Spring Break is over. Each desk is equipped with a laptop, some Dells and some Macbook Pros. All of the Dells were taken, so you begrudgingly sit at a Macbook Pro laptop. The Internet browser is opened to the Google page at http://www.google.com. Dr. Paul Theodore--a tall, mustached yet bald man, wearing khakis and a faded aloha shirt printed with pineapples and surfboards--comes in a few minutes later, and asks everyone to be seated quickly. The instructor welcomes everyone to class and says to call him Dr. P.T. He quickly jumps right into instruction. He must be in a rush; it isnt 10:30 yet. I assume everyone already knows how to browse the Internet, and has already created a Google email account. Dr P.T. says condescendingly. I also assume that everyone has used some form of software like Microsoft Office, Pages for Mac, or other similar software. Dr. P.T. covers a long list of entry-level skills. You look around at the room and see several people get up and leave the room as each entry-level skill is named and defined. Only half of the people remain. They must be noobs. You whisper under your breath. Youve already been using Google as your email for several years, and of course being a graduate student, you know how to use Microsoft Offices basic operations. What seems like an hour has passed, and youre ready to start working, but Dr. P.T. is deviating and talking about the history of Google and email, and how Al Gore really did not invent the Internet. You admittedly have become distracted during the lecture, as you are pretty familiar with Google and Gmail. Glancing around the room, you see that the remaining people also look bored and disinterested. Go on to the next page ! "#$%&!)!

All right class, lets begin applying what we just went over, Dr. P.T. pipes excitedly. Now those are the words you were waiting to hear. You should already be familiar with creating a Google account. In order to create a Document you will need to first locate the proper tab, Dr. P.T. continues. On the overhead projector, Dr. P.T. demonstrates accessing the Google Application Suite accompanied with some explanation. You are ready to take some notes. First, I want you all to login to your Google account.

Second, Scroll up to the 'Documents' tab in the upper left hand corner of your Google Toolbar.

Notice the drop-down tab above labeled More. Dr. P.T. says as he clicks on the More tab. Google has a host of additional applications that are not considered part of the Google Application Suite. These applications include Google Music, Google Blogger, Google Sites, Google Finance and a variety of others, he continues as you continue to write down this information.

Dr. P.T. showing the More tab

Please keep in mind that Google Application Suite only includes the following: Google Document, Google Presentation, Google Spreadsheet, Google Forms and Google Drawing the instructor clarifies. For the sake of our lesson today, we will refer to the group of applications as the Google Application Suite. Go on to the next page ! "#$%&!+!

CROSSROADS DECISION 1
After the lesson, Dr. P.T. shows the following question on the board as he asks, Please raise your hand if you think you know the answer to this question. Youve taken really good notes, and you eagerly raise your hand.
What is the correct order of steps when creating a new Google Document?
A. Login to Google > Locate Document Tab > Click on Create > Click on Document B. Login to Google > Click on Document > Click on Create > Locate Document Tab C. Click on Create > Locate Google Document Tab > Click on Document > Login to Google D. Locate Google Document Tab > Click on Google Document > Click on Create > Login to Google

As Dr. P.T. goes around the class, remarkably, no one can answer the question correctly. He finally calls upon you, and you tell him your answer.

If you answer A, go to page 27 If you answer B, go to page 28 If you answer C, go to page 29 If you answer D, go to page 30 ! "#$%&!,!

Chapter 2: Identify the Google Document Application

Now that we are all logged into our Google Accounts, lets begin working with the most common Google application; that is the Google Document. Dr. P.T. says. Word processing is a typical and frequent function of a computer. Most people have viewed, created, printed or even shared a typed document that has been created on a computer. I am sure with all the professionals in the room, you are all very familiar with word processing for work and personal use, he exclaims. Dr. P.T. explains, Googles Document Application has a few extra features that make it excellent for online use. It has faster real time collaboration; you can import MS Office documents from your desktop, and it has all the familiar features of margins, comments, tables, footnotes and more.

On the overhead, Dr. P.T. shows what a blank document looks like.

As you examine the screen, you notice that it says Untitled Document. The tool bar also looks very familiar to Microsoft Word, with the similar navigation tools at the top: File, Edit, View, Insert, Format, and the flashing curser on the blank part, where text can be typed. ! ! ! ! Go on to the next page ! "#$%&!-!

As you look around at screens of other students, you notice that they are not on the

Google Document screen but other screens. The student to the right of you is on a different screen. You see that it has similar tool bar options, but it looks very much like a PowerPoint presentation.

Screen of student to the right.

The student to the left of you has this strange screen shot. You can see the words, Untitled form at the top, and the entire page looks like a web form that may be used to create surveys.

You gaze ahead, and you can see the student in front of you is also on the wrong page. These people pay attention, you think to yourself. The screen shows vertical lines and horizontal lines. It looks much like Microsoft Excel; you assume that it must be some kind of Spreadsheet application.

Screen of student behind you.

You realize that there are so many different applications in the Google Application Suite, so you click on the Drawing tab, and draw a few lines. As soon as you release your mouse button, Dr. P.T. appears to your left.

Your screen of the Drawing Application.

Excuse me, but I think youre jumping ahead. Please keep up with the rest of the class. Dr. P.T. scolds you. We will discuss this and the other applications in a later part of our seminar. You quickly return to the Google Document application. Time for another question. Dr. P.T. remarks as he returns to the front of the classroom, scowling at you for not paying attention. Go on to the next page ! "#$%&!..!

CROSSROADS DECISION 2
Now that weve learned what Google Document looks like, lets test our knowledge. Dr. P.T. continues, I want you all to look at the screenshots on the overhead. Which screenshot is of the Google Document application? A) B)

C)

D)

You look over the question and the choices on the overhead. Enthusiastically, you raise your hand instantly. You look around and see that some of the others are reluctant to answer. Dr. P.T. calls upon you.

If you choose A, go to page 31 If you choose B, go to page 32 If you choose C, go to page 33 ! "#$%&!.'!

You stretch out in your chair and glance at the clock behind the instructors head. Its almost 11:45, and the huge breakfast is beginning to wear off. Your stomach is growling and your mouth is starting to water at the sight of pastries at the refreshment table. Through the window, you see sunny skies, a soft gentle breeze rustling the bushes: not a cloud in sight. Picture perfect. Today is definitely a day for the beach. You seem to understand this application more than the others in the class, and you consider quitting, but you push the thought to leave early aside because you know this lecture series will benefit your graduate classes. You return your focus to the sound of Dr. P.T.s voice. Document Application is a software application used for manipulating text: it is used to create, retrieve, modify, store, and print text, Dr. P.T. reads from the screen. You think this is important information to share with your classmates, so you write it down exactly as shown:

Document Application is a computer program for manipulating text, that is used to create, retrieve, modify, store, and print text.

You read what you wrote, and you think how simple the definition is. Many people cannot really define what a document application is, but now that youre in this seminar, you finally have that definition. It is like intellectual gold. Dr. P.T. continues to explain the differences between the Document Application and other applications. This might be useful information in the future, so you also decide to write these topics down as well.

Presentation Application is used to create slides for a presentation that contains content to emphasize the speakers intent or purpose. Spreadsheet Application is a computer program that displays numerical data in cells in a simulated accountant's worksheet of rows and columns in which hidden formulas can perform calculations on the visible data. Changing the contents of one cell can cause automatic recalculation of other cells. Form Application allows a user to enter data in a formatted graphical user interface that is sent to the Spreadsheet Application for storage. Forms differ from Spreadsheets because Forms resemble realistic paper forms because users fill out the forms using check boxes, radio buttons, or text areas. Drawing Application is used to create digital art for including in other Google Applications. Though the Drawing Application can be used to create text, the lack of formatting features is best

CROSSROADS DECISION 3
As you write the last word in the Drawing Application definition, Dr. P.T. abruptly states, Okay class, its time to test your retention again. You glance at the others in the room, and everyone looks afraid. A woman sitting closest to Dr. P.T. begins to cry and screams out, This is all too much for me! and dramatically storms out of the room. Dr. P.T. unapologetically smirks and turns to the classroom. Would anyone else like to leave? Dr. P.T. interrogates the classroom. No one answers. Being the winner of two questions already, you know that you will be able to handle this next one. You glance up at the projector overhead and see the following:

Which of the following applications is used to create, retrieve, modify, store, and print text?
A) Presentation B) Form C) Spreadsheet D) Draw E) Document

At this point, you can feel all eyes fall upon you. The rest of the class refuses to answer fearing the verbal wrath of Dr. P.T. They all wait for you to answer. Coyly, you slowly raise your hand. Dr. P.T. scans the room, and his eyes stop at you. Seems like the grad student has the answer, once again. All right, lets hear it. What is your answer? Dr. P.T. says snidely.

If you answer A go to page 35 If you answer B go to page 36 If you answer C go to page 37 If you answer D go to page 38 If you answer E go to page 39! ! "#$%&!.)!

Now class lets move to the last portion of our Google Document presentation. Dr. P.T. says. Bear with me, I know its lunchtime and youre all ready to grab lunch and head outdoors. As if on cue to the sounds of your growing stomach, the scent of kalua pork fills the room. Wondering who dug an imu, the roaring from the depths of your stomach is loud. You notice others shifting in their seats too as their bodies respond to the aroma. You had thought the light refreshments were just the pastries on the table; little did you know that there would be a luau. These Google trainings are awesome! Dr. P.T. shows another slide on the overhead. A woman who is sitting next to you raises her hand; this is the very first time this woman has spoken. Is this the application that I can use to upload personal images and videos into a presentation and share it with my family residing on the mainland? No Maam. That would be a presentation. Dr. P.T. replied with an emphasis on the word presentation. We will be covering that in the next section. The woman looked dejected and turned to face her screen. You hear her make a slight whimper. An astute-looking man in a white shirt and plaid-purple tie raises his hand, Im an accountant, and is this the application I can use to enter formulas that calculates a budget? No, sir, that is the Spreadsheet application, and we will cover that in a future class. What about drawing shapes and figures? Can I do that in Google Document? mumbles another student while eating a cheese danish. No, you can do that in the Drawing Application and we will also talk about that later. Please do not eat near the computers. Dr. P.T. replies as his infuriated eyes gaze upon the sticky laptop keyboard that the cheese danish eating student was using. You write everything down from the overhead while Dr. P.T. reluctantly answers other non-Google Application related questions.

Dr. P.T. seems to notice the massive luau with Tahitian drumming music taking place outside, as he states, Yes I know the imu is distracting, we will adjourn in the next 15-20 minutes. This is the last section on the Google Document application. You will take a post-test after this and will be scored according to your level of expertise, but we will revisit that at the end. He continues, This is the last question before we get to eat. Anyone raise your hand if you know the answer. The overhead screen shows:
Which of the following is one use for the Document application? A) Creating a form B) Creating a newsletter C) Creating a presentation D) Creating a spreadsheet E) Creating Clipart

You seem to be the only one in the room to even attempt to answer the question. You slowly raise your hand, and Dr. P.T. seems to already be looking at you, expecting your answer. The sound of your growling stomach is deafening. Everyone is relying on you to get the right answer. Yes, and what does the grad student have as an answer? Dr. P.T. asks.

Dr. P.T. concludes todays seminar, Thank you all for coming today, I know its lunch time. I hope you will join us for the rest of the series on Google's Application Suite. Before leaving, please complete the post-test and submit that to me. We will grade these while you grab some lunch and return them to you with your Google Expertise Level. The instructor and his assistants begin handing out the tests. You lean back in your chair again, anxious to eat and run. Youve found the session to be very helpful and youre excited to begin using Google's Document application within your cohorts. An assistant hands you your test and you begin cranking away.

Conclusion.!
! !
Dear Adventurer, Congratulations! If youve made it to this point you have successfully navigated our module and completed the course. Prior to embarking on other educational journeys we want to quickly review some of the key concepts that we hope you take with you on your future academic adventures. Core Concepts: Be able to locate the Google Application Suite once logged into Google Account Identify the Google Document Application Define the use of Google Document Application Analyze the specific uses of Google Document Application Transferring your knowledge to new educational adventures: Online document collaboration is an important part of your graduate program and could, very likely, be a large part of your work career. The skills used to create and share a Google Document can be used in settings such as distant learning collaboration between students, creation of agendas and meeting outlines between department teams in different states, and even as a collaboration communication tool that is more cost and time effective than long distant phone calls or travel. From this module, you should now be able to demonstrate efficiency in completing the core concepts above and applying this in real life scenarios. We hope youve enjoyed the journey as much as weve enjoyed creating the adventure. Mahalo, Epic Platinum

Decision 1: You glance at the caller id on the phone and see that the caller was one of your overachieving cohort classmates. It is Thursday, and you know your classmates would be calling to invite you to a night of Instructional Design Model Trivia. As tempting as a game night sounds, you hope your classmate will get the hint from the last two unreturned invitations. Picking up the pink paper, you notice that its a flyer.
