3 System Description SMA Solar Technology AG
8 FSS-IAS-en-21 Installation Manual - Quick Reference Guide
3 System Description
The SMA Flexible Storage System is intended to support increased self-consumption through the following measures:
Buffering of excess PV energy with battery
Plant monitoring and load control with Sunny Home Manager
The Sunny Island uses the connected battery to buffer excess PV energy. Via the Sunny Home Manager, the Sunny Island
receives the data of the connected energy meter and thus records feed-in and purchased electricity. Based on this data,
the Sunny Island battery management regulates the charging and discharging of the battery.
The Sunny Home Manager receives location-based weather forecasts via the Internet and uses them to create a yield
forecast for the PV plant. In addition, the Sunny Home Manager detects how much energy is typically consumed at
certain times in a household and uses this to create a load profile of the household. The Sunny Home Manager uses the
yield forecast and the load profile to determine favourable times for increasing the self-consumption rate and switches
the electrical loads connected to the SMA radio-controlled sockets on and off as necessary. If required by the network
operator, the Sunny Home Manager also monitors the active power feed-in of the PV plant. If the network operator's
maximum permissible value for active power feed-in is exceeded, the Sunny Home Manager sends power reduction
commands to the SMA PV inverters. The PV plant can consist of PV inverters with Bluetooth communication and PV
inverters with Speedwire communication.

Damage to the battery due to incorrect settings

The parameters for the battery influence the charging behaviour of the Sunny Island. The battery is damaged
due to incorrect setting of the parameters for battery type, nominal voltage and capacity.
During the basic configuration, ensure that you configure the battery values recommended by the battery
manufacturer (for the battery technical data, see the documentation of the battery manufacturer).
In the basic configuration, configure the battery capacity for a ten-hour electric discharge (C10).
For this purpose, the battery manufacturer specifies the battery capacity in relation to discharge time.

* The lower the threshold for the battery state of charge is set, the greater the potential increase in self-consumption and the
shorter the battery's service life. In the case of lead acid batteries, SMA Solar Technology AG does not recommend changing the lower state
of charge limit setting of 50%.
8 Preparing Bluetooth Communication SMA Solar Technology AG
18 FSS-IAS-en-21 Installation Manual - Quick Reference Guide
8 Preparing Bluetooth Communication
All devices must be set to the same NetID so that the SMA Bluetooth devices in the SMA Flexible Storage System can
communicate with each other. Plants with SMA Bluetooth operating in close proximity to one another are therefore
distinguished by their individual NetID.
Requirement:
The SMA Flexible Storage System must be installed in accordance with the circuitry (see Section 4) and must be in
operation (see the installation manuals of the individual devices and components).
Procedure:
1. For PV inverters with integrated Bluetooth interface that communicate via Speedwire, set NetID 0 (see PV inverter
