Latrice Ferguson Media Services and Production Webquest April 6, 2010 Introduction: Who is to blame for the genocide

in Rwanda? Is everyone to blame? Is no one to blame? These are the questions I want you to answer.

The history of the world is filled with terrible incidents of genocide*: the Holocaust, the American slave trade, the genocide in Rwanda, and many more. Rwanda is a small country in central Africa bordered by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania, Burundi, and Uganda. There are two tribes* in Rwanda, the Hutus and the Tutsis. The Rwandan Genocide was the 1994 mass killing of hundreds of thousands of Rwandas Tutsis and Hutu political moderates by the Hutu dominated government under the Hutu Power ideology. Over the course of approximately 100 days beginning with the assassination of Juvnal Habyarimana on April 6 through mid-July, at least 500,000 people or 20% of the countrys population were killed, according to the estimate of Human Rights Watch. As the anniversary of the genocide approaches, I want each group to consider the roles certain entities played in this terrible tragedy. And what each group could have done to prevent what happened in Rwanda. Role Players: Hutus Tutsis Europe United States

Setting the stage: There were a lot of things that led up to the Rwanda genocide. Each group will answer the following questions: Rwanda stats: population, location, languages, and religions. What role did the colonization* of Rwanda play in the events leading up to the genocide? Who are the Tutsis? Who are the Hutus? List five events that led up to the Rwanda genocide?
