District 9470 Conference 23-25 October

Rotary District 9470 is holding its annual conference from

23-25 October at Sheraton Hotel Perth.

*** Don’t forget to put the Rotary Muster in your diary. ***

The 2009 Rotary Muster conference will highlight issues which confront both
country and city Western Australians. Issues such as the GM cropping debate, the
health issues being faced by county men and ways of coping.

From the business world we have a former country boy who became a Rotary
Exchange Student and went on the lead one of Australian largest companies. We’re
lucky enough to have a speaker with first hand experience of the Victorian bush fires
and the work which Rotary did in their time of need.

We plan the “Great Debate” on a topic of major significance for Rotary. As well,
there will be three selected club highlights to emphasise the great activities which
continue in our district.
And much more!
You can download the registration form or apply to be a conference sponsor.
Places and sponsorship opportunities are limited, so get in fast!

If you’d like to stay at the Sheraton Hotel you might like to check out their discount
accommodation rates.

Sorry to all people that received last week’s Bulletin more than once via email.
I received reports of 3 or 4 copies arriving in some member’s mailbox.

Mike Davies told me that he had some problems in the past where 34 copies
of one of his emails were send……..

Laurie assured me it was not my fault, but the “server”.

Hopefully it won’t re-occur.

Membership increases during 2008-09 Rotary year

In a year of economic havoc that rocked global markets and shook consumer confidence, Rotary
International’s most important asset – its members – steadily grew.

As of 30 June, the end of the 2008-09 RI year, there were 1,234,527 members in 33,790 Rotary
clubs. That’s an increase of 3,044 members and 520 clubs from the previous year.
“Businesses in tough economies plan how to grow, and most businesses then do grow. Rotary clubs
also have to plan for their futures and take action on those plans,” said Mike McGovern, chair of
RI’s Membership Development and Retention Committee.

“New clubs are forming in communities with existing clubs by offering alternative times and the
opportunity to bring fresh perspectives to Rotary,” McGovern added.

More than 5,700 clubs in the 534 RI districts achieved a membership growth rate of 10 percent or
better during the 2008-09 year. The 10 percent goal was set by 2008-09 RI President Dong Kurn
Lee, who presided over 12 presidential membership conferences held on six continents during the
year. Each conference was attended by between 300 and 1,500 Rotarians. Lee also made personal
calls to each of Rotary’s district governors.

“We must reach out to people who are different from us and from the members in our club, because
this is the way to a stronger club with more connections and better potential,” Lee said at the 2009
International Assembly in San Diego, California, USA.

Taiwanese districts respond after deadly typhoon

Districts in Taiwan are coordinating relief efforts after Typhoon Morakot triggered massive
mudslides and flooding 7-9 August, killing an estimated 500 people and causing US$1.5 billion in
damage.
RI Director Jackson San-Lien Hsieh, a member of the Rotary Club of Taipei Sunrise, has worked
closely with the seven district governors in Taiwan to gather resources to aid the hardest-hit
southern areas. "I believe the Rotarians in Taiwan will do whatever it takes to reach out and offer
our assistance to help rebuild," says Hsieh. "We will care for those people and areas that have been
most impacted by this disaster."
Fortunately, he says, no Rotarians were directly affected by the typhoon, which caused the worst
flooding Taiwan has seen in 50 years.
Hsieh and the governors of districts 3460, 3470, 3480, 3490, 3500, 3510, and 3520 have decided to
put in place several relief initiatives:
Build a village of temporary shelters for those left homeless by the storm
Help provide supplies for educational institutions that were damaged.
Locate and repair damaged pipelines, sewer lines, and water towers to help ensure that clean water
is available.

FLIGHT CONVERSATION WITH A KID?

A stranger was seated next to a little girl on the airplane when the
stranger turned to her and said, 'Let's talk. I've heard that flights go
quicker if you strike up a conversation with your fellow passenger.'

The little girl, who had just opened her book, closed it slowly and said
to the stranger, 'What would you like to talk about?'

'Oh, I don't know,' said the stranger. 'How about nuclear power?'
and he smiles.
'OK, ' she said... 'That could be an interesting topic. But let me ask you a
question first. A horse, a cow, and a deer all eat the same stuff: grass
- Yet a deer excretes little pellets, while a cow turns out a flat patty,
and a horse produces clumps of dried grass. Why do you suppose that is?'

The stranger, visibly surprised by the little girl's intelligence, thinks

about it and says, 'Hmmm, I have no idea.'

To which the little girl replies, 'Do you really feel qualified to discuss
nuclear power when you don't know anything about manure?

The cheapest facelift is a laugh!
