Introductory Message
Welcome to Science Grade 9!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of

the Schools Division of Capiz and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas
through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is
developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible
adults) in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic
Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials

aimed to guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and
time using the contextualized resources in the community. This will also
assist the learners in acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and
attitudes for productivity and employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Science Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the leaching-
learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency
(MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and learner.
This will be made available to the learners with the references/links to ease
the independent learning.

For the learner:

The Science Activity Sheet is developed to help you continue learning

even if you are not in school. This learning material provides you with
meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active
learner, carefully read and understand the instructions then perform the
activities and answer the assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator
on the agreed schedule.

Climate Change

I Learning Competency

• Describe certain climatic phenomena that occur on a global level

(S9ES-IIIf-31)

II Background Information for Learners

Is climate change real? Is climate change man-made or is it just a natural
occurrence?
Climate change is one of the most current worldwide issues. Some expert
say it is true that the Earth go through a period of cooling and a period of
warming. The increase of temperature that you are experiencing right now is
caused by factors other than human activity. Another point of view is that the
increase of Earth’s temperature is brought about by human intervention.
Whether the cause is man-made or not, climate change is a change in the
environment. Global warming can bring about a rising of the sea level due to the
melting of ice caps and glaciers. You may experience severe weather disturbances
such as stronger typhoons and heavier rainfalls. Some parts of the world may
experience the El Niño or La Niña phenomena. And most of all, it can cause
extinction of some fauna and flora.

IV Activity Proper
Activity 1. It’s Getting Hot in Here
The data below was gathered by observing the temperature inside the two
aquariums. A thermometer is placed on the surface of each aquarium. One
aquarium is placed inside the house, and the other is placed outside (exposed to
sunlight). Study the data and answer the following guide questions.

Table 1. Temperature Readings

Figure 1. The greenhouse effect

Source:http://www.learner.org/courses

Greenhouse gases prevent heat from escaping the earth thus making earth’s
temperature higher (Figure1). The greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide (CO2),
methane (CH4). chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), and nitrous oxide. More greenhouse
gases in the atmosphere means that the equilibrium temperature will be higher
as these gases absorb more heat. These will result in the increase of global
temperature, less greenhouse gases will mean lower temperature.
Burning of fossil fuels is one of the main sources of carbon dioxide emission.
If there is too much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere there would be an increase
in global temperature. The effect of climate change was felt by people here in the
Philippines like heavy rainfalls brought by typhoon Yolanda and Ursula.
Recently, typhoon Ullyses submerged Marikina City and part of Rizal. Typhoon
Yolanda brought the strongest winds ever encountered by people in the Visayas,
leaving great destruction and much loss of lives. Hanging Amihan brought very
2
cold wind affecting the climate of the country and destroying some crops of
farmers in the Northern part of Luzon.
El Niño is a cyclical event in which there is an abnormal and lengthy warming
in the eastern part of the Pacific Ocean. This occurs in irregular intervals of two
to seven years and last for nine months. This phenomenon happens when the
upwelling of colder water is blocked by the large quantities of warm surface water.
It affects the country when there is an increase of the temperature in the eastern
part of the Pacific Ocean. It will bring severe drought and it can cause stronger
thunderstorm disturbances and massive storms.
La Nina is the opposite climatic disturbances to El Nino. It may, but does not
always follow El Nino events. It may last for nine to twelve months or in some
cases it lasts for two years. This event is triggered by the cooling of the eastern
part of the Pacific Ocean that is why it is called “cold Pacific”.

Activity 2.
Directions: Study the image below and answer the questions that follow. Write your
answers in your science notebook.

1. Discuss in 2 sentences how these two phenomena differ from each other.

2. Describe how the El Niño and La Niña phenomenon affect the lives of
people?

3
According to National Geographic, El Niño is the climate pattern that describes
the unusual warming of the surface waters of the Pacific Ocean. It is the “warm
phase” of a larger phenomenon called the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). La
Nina, the “cool phase” of ENSO, is a pattern that describes the unusual cooling of the
region’s surface waters. El Niño and La Niña are considered the ocean part of ENSO,
while the Southern Oscillation is its atmospheric changes.
Over the years, El Niño has impacts on the temperatures of ocean, the speed
and strength of ocean currents, the health of coastal fisheries, and
local weather from Australia to South America and beyond. It occurs irregularly at
two- to seven-year intervals. However, it is not a regular cycle or predictable.
El Niño was recognized by fisherfolks off the coast of Peru as the emergence
of unusually warm water. There is no real record of what indigenous Peruvians called
the phenomenon, but Spanish immigrants called it El Niño, meaning “the little boy”.
When capitalized, El Niño means the Christ Child, and was used because this
phenomenon often happens around Christmas. Later, El Niño came to describe as
the irregular and intense climate changes rather than just the warming of coastal
surface waters.
La Nina, on the other hand, means “little girl” in Spanish and has the opposite
effects of El Niño. According to the National Geographic, La Niña is a climate pattern
that describes the cooling of surface ocean waters along the tropical west coast of
South America. It is characterized by lower-than-normal air pressure over the
western Pacific. These low-pressure zones contribute to increased rainfall.

V. Reflection

Many experts say that human activities is the reason why climate change
happens. Why is this so? What crime did humanity commit? Are you part of this
crime? Whom are you going to blame the outcome? So, find out if you are part of
this big conspiracy by doing the activity below.

What’s your carbon footprint? Evaluate your carbon emission.

Directions. The table below contains the different activities that contribute to
carbon emission depending on how frequent it is done. Copy the table in your
Science Notebook. Rate yourself by checking the appropriate column.
