Welcome to Science Grade 9!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the Schools
Division of Capiz and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas through the Curriculum and
Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is developed to guide the learning facilitators
(teachers, parents and responsible adults) in helping the learners meet the standards set by
the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to guide the
learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the contextualized
resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in acquiring the lifelong learning
skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Science Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the leaching-learning activities
specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face
encounter between you and learner. This will be made available to the learners with the
references/links to ease the independent learning.

For the learner:

The Science Activity Sheet is developed to help you continue learning even if you are
not in school. This learning material provides you with meaningful and engaging activities for
independent learning. Being an active learner, carefully read and understand the instructions
then perform the activities and answer the assessments. This will be returned to your
facilitator on the agreed schedule.

Volcanic Eruption

I. Learning Competency with Code

• Explain how volcanoes erupt (S9ES-IIIa-25)

II. Background Information for Learners

Volcanic eruptions happen when lava and gas are discharged from a volcanic
vent. The most common consequences of this are population movements as large
numbers of people are often forced to flee the moving lava flow. Volcanic eruptions
often cause temporary food shortages and volcanic ash landslides called Lahar. Some
volcanic eruptions are explosive and others are not. The explosivity of an eruption
depends on the composition of the magma. If magma is thin and runny, gases can
escape easily from it. When this type of magma erupts, it flows out of the volcano.
In this learning activity you will discover what happens when volcanoes erupt.

IV. Activity Proper

Activity 1

Materials:
355 ml or 12 oz. soda drink
5 pcs soft menthol candy

Procedure:

1. Drop 5 pieces of soft menthol candy in a 355ml or 12oz of soda drink.

2. Wait for a few seconds and observe what will happen.
3. Record your observation in your Science notebook.

Guide Questions:

1. What did you observe?

There are about 53 potentially active volcanoes in the Philippines. When

these volcanoes erupt, they spew hot, dangerous gases, ash, lava and rock that can
destroy life and properties.

The following are the different types of volcanic eruptions:

• pyroclastic explosions, with is fast-moving hot gas and volcanic matter

• hot ash releases
• lava flows
• gas emissions
• glowing avalanches, when gas and ashes release

Volcanic eruptions can also cause calamities such as floods, landslides, and
mudslides, especially if it is accompanied with heavy rains. It can also impact climate
change through the emission of volcanic gases like sulfur dioxide and carbon
dioxide. These gases can cause global cooling (sulfur dioxide), and global warming
(carbon dioxide).

Lava like any kind of liquids flows, trying to take the shape of its container.
Liquids and lava will flow continuously unless it meets an end (wall) that it
cannot surpass).

gases contained within it form expanding bubbles. These bubbles increase the
pressure of the magma and, if this pressure is great enough, it escapes violently
when released. This escaping liquid rock becomes lava, which solidifies as it
travels.)
