Self-Learning Module
Quarter 4
Explain the Importance of Water Cycle
Introductory Message

For the facilitator:

Welcome to the Science 4 Self-Learning Module ___ on The importance of water cycle!

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators from
Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its Officer-In-Charge Schools Division
Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A. Agustin in partnership with the Local
Government of Pasig through its mayor, Honorable Victor Ma. Regis “Vico” N. Sotto.
The writers utilized the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum using the Most
Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) while overcoming their personal, social,
and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of
the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage
their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners
as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the learner:

Welcome to the Science 4 Self-Learning Module ____ on Explaining the importance

of water cycle!

The hand is one of the most symbolized part of the human body. It is often used to
depict skill, action and purpose. Through our hands we may learn, create and
accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource signifies that you as a learner
is capable and empowered to successfully achieve the relevant competencies and
skills at your own pace and time. Your academic success lies in your own hands!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for
guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to
process the contents of the learning material while being an active learner.

This module has the following parts and corresponding icons:

Expectation – This points to the set of knowledge and

skills that you will learn after completing the module.

Pretest - This will measure your prior knowledge and the

concepts to be mastered throughout the lesson.

Recap - This section will measure what learning and

skills that you understand from the previous lesson.

Lesson- This section will discuss the topic for this

module.

Activities - This is a set of activities you will perform.

Wrap Up- This section summarizes the concepts and

applications of the lessons.

Valuing- This part will check the integration of values in

the learning competency.

Posttest - This will measure how much you have learned

from the entire module.
EXPECTATIONS
This module will focus mostly on the importance of water
cycle.

After using this module, you are expected to:

1. Explain the importance of water cycle;

2. Illustrate ways why water is important.
3. Develop an awareness on the effects of the importance of
water to all living organisms.

PRETEST

Directions: Read carefully the statements below. Choose the letter

of which you know the best answer.
1.Which of the following is the correct phases of water?
A. Solid, liquid and gas
B. Snow, rain, sleet, hail
C. Transpiration, evaporation, precipitation
D. Evaporation, condensation and precipitation

2.What causes the precipitation stage of the water cycle?

A. Water vapor is cooled forming larger more visible droplets.
B. Water is heated causing it to change into water vapor
C. small water droplets are heated causing it to snow
D. water seeps in to the ground or run off into larger bodies
of water
3.Which of the following statements show importance of water?
A. Plants need water to survive and produce for people and
animals to eat.
B. People need water as it keeps our body healthy by helping
the body eliminate waste products.
C. Water is not important for it brings flood in the community.
D. Statements A and B are correct

4. Which of the following processes shows that water continuously

circulates in the earth’s surface?
A. Precipitation
B. Condensation
C. Water cycle
D. Motorcycle

5. Carlo lives in a place where there is less supply of fresh water.

The creek where it is the only source of clean water near their area
has found out to have bacteria which made it not anymore safe for
use. What could Carlo do to help save the creek from getting
worse?
A. Throw waste that are biodegradable.
B. Avoid using water from the creek
C. Pretend as if he is not affected.
D. Organize a movement to help save the source of water in
their area.
RECAP
Directions: Write the letter of the word being described in the
phrases.
_____1. Transformation of water from A. Precipitation
liquid to gas phases as it moves from the
ground or bodies of water.
_____2. Excess rainwater can no longer B. Transpiration
sufficiently infiltrate in the soil.
_____3. Process by which condensed C. Evaporation
water falls the earths’ surface as rain,
hail or sleet.
_____4. The movement of water within D. Runoff
plants through stomata in its leaves.
_____5. Transformation of water vapor to E. Condensation
liquid droplet in the air, creating clouds
and fog.

LESSON

All
living
organisms
need water to
survive. We
are
fortunate to
live in a
water
planet.

big
blue portion of the earth is covered with water as shown in Figure
1. But this doesn’t mean we have an entire globe of water to use
as we please. What if water didn’t naturally recycle itself, we would
run out of clean water, which is essential to life. Let’s find out how
water cycle processes sustain the availability of water for all living
things and how it regulates weather patterns on our planet.

Freshwater is vital to life. It may seem abundant, but when

accounting for all the water on Earth, it's in limited supply. How
does usable water break down for us? About 97% of the water
around us is salty. Only three percent of the water on our planet
is freshwater. A majority of this water, about two percent of the
world total, is contained in glaciers and ice sheets or stored below
ground. The remaining one percent is found in lakes, rivers and
wetland areas or transported through the atmosphere in the form
of water vapor, clouds and precipitation. Rain and snowfall
replenish freshwater sources, making it vital to know when, where
and how much water is falling at any given time.
ACTIVITIES

Activity 1: Directions: Draw a water cycle in the box with the

terms for the processes involved. Then provide a brief explanation
on the importance of the water cycle.

Explanation: ________________________________________________________________

Activity 2: Directions: Put a check mark (/) in the line before a

sentence that states a way to conserve water. Put a cross mark
(x) on the line that does not.
_____1. Turn off the water from the faucet while you brush your
teeth.
_____2. Help clean areas of your house using water collected from
the laundry.
_____3. Water plants using a water in a pail instead of from a
hose.
_____4. Let the water from a faucet run on plates you are rinsing
so plates come out cleaner.
_____5. When washing your face, you can let the water from a
faucet run continuously even as you soap your face.
Activity 3: Directions: Match the description in column A with
the term in Column B. Write only the letter of the answer on the
line before the description.
COLUMN A COLUMN B
_____1. Water found below Earth’s A. Ocean
surface
_____2. Biggest body of salt water B. Ground water
_____3. Process by which water is C. water cycle
formed, used and reused
_____4. Total amount of water on D. Three percent
Earth.
_____5. Percentage of freshwater on E. Hydrosphere
Earth

WRAP UP
Water is a very important resources needed for all forms of life on
