The Attack on Arnaz is An Attack on All Cody Students

Defend Cody D.I.T. Junior Arnaz Colvin!

Whereas: Arnaz Colvin was beaten, arrested and threatened to be killed by Officer Jason Tonti. Arnaz suffered chronic pain fromLumbar contusion, chest wall pain, contusion to chest , back, right ankle, left wrist,a fractured vertebra, insomnia, flash-backs & anxiety. Arnaz was later charged with obstructing, resisting and assaulting an officer. This occurred while waiting at the bus stop, where police regularly use such racist/ abusive tactics on students. Nothing justifies a cop acting as judge, jury and executioner, as Jason Tonti did in his mafia-style threat to shoot, kill and throw Arnazs body in the river. A badge is not a license to kill or abuse. The racist/abusive police that patrol Cody have done nothing to reduce crime. This policy is carried out as an alternative to providing Cody students with the integrated, equal, quality education everyone deserves, because such repression is necessary to prevent students organizing to demand improvement in their education. Such separate & unequal conditions, from lack of programs, opportunities & supplies, to disrepair of Codys building, combined with constant police violence, threats & disrespect inevitably causes constant, simmering anger, and therefore fights to break out between classmates. Only building a new civil rights movement can change this. This attack on Arnaz is an attack on all Cody students, meant to intimidate by example. Therefore be it resolved: That Cody students will mobilize to all of Arnazs court dates, to protest and pack the court room, to ensure the charges are dropped, organize to get officer Jason Tonti fired, charged and jailed, and issued a restraining order barring him from being in the area of Cody, because no officer with such a history of violence and abuse belongs anywhere near a school. Cody will unite to defend Arnaz and all students from any more attacks, by providing Arnaz (or any student) with a defense-guard of fellow students as they walk to/from school, especially while waiting at the bus stop. Therefore be it further resolved: that Cody High School will mobilize in support of a lawsuit against the Detroit Police Department to win an end to the beating, arresting, threatening and abusing students in/around school. If police are seen approaching, harassing, attacking or arresting any student, other students will immediately text all other students requesting them to come to the location of the incident. Students already present will then begin recording the police with their phones, to be joined by others as they arrive, and then send all video directly to a senior BAMN organizer. This will interrupt the police attack, help publicize/build our movement, and provide evidence for the lawsuit.

We the undersigned declare that, in Cody, we have each others backs. If you mess with one of us, youre messing with all of us. The attack on Arnaz is an attack on all Cody students, not just him. When Cody students say, We the mob its a declaration of our solidarity with one another and our readiness to fight to protect each other. When Jason Tonti made the decision to beat, arrest and threaten to kill Arnaz, he was making a grave mistake. He was declaring war on all of Cody, and he is vastly outnumbered. If we continue in the proud tradition of Cody High School and defend Arnaz as our brother, we are a combined force which cannot be beat. With enough determination and leadership, the mob will win. We pledge to continue this proud Cody tradition, to defend Arnaz,, and, in so doing, to defend ourselves and each other.
