News Roundup
This week opened with strong opening with Nifty making its all time high level at 6415, however, soon profit-booking and concerns over contracting IIP and high inflation, weakened the market sentiment which couldnt sustain the rally above 6400 levels. Renewed concerns over US tapering program in near term further weakened the markets globally too. Nifty closed at 6168.40 and Sensex closed at 20715.58. The provisional annual inflation rate based on all India general Consumer Price Index (CPI) (Combined) for November 2013 accelerated to nine months high level at 11.24% YoY, much higher than expectation of over 10% figure and also higher as compared to 10.17% for the previous month of October 2013. The corresponding provisional inflation rates for rural and urban areas for November 2013 stood at 11.74% and 10.53% respectively, compared to 10.19% and 10.20% respectively in October. In a disappointment, India's annual industrial output growth measured by index of industrial production (IIP) contracted by 1.8% at 168.5 in the month of October over the corresponding month of previous year, this figure was also higher than the street's expectation of over -1.2% figure. To keep a check on insider trading activities in the stock market, Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) panel, headed by former chief justice of India N. K. Sodhi, has proposed tougher law. The panel has recommended widening the definition of 'insider trading', with plans to include company employees, directors, their immediate relatives and public servants handling market sensitive information, as the securities regulator moves to crack down on offenders. In a positive news, India's imports fell the most in four years, by 16.37% annually to $33.8 billion in November, leaving narrower trade deficit of $9.22 billion as against $17.2 billion deficit in November 2012, as per the latest data released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The retail price of domestic cooking gas (LPG) has gone up by Rs 3.46 for 14.2-kg cylinder to Rs 40.71 after government raised the commission paid to dealers by over 9% to offset their rising costs such as salary, power and rentals. The development comes two days after Petroleum and Natural Gas minister M Veerappa Moily denied any rise in cooking gas prices. RBI will conduct an additional two-day marginal standing facility auction on Saturday to meet banks' cash needs as liquidity conditions are expected to tighten due to advance tax payments in mid-December. India's garment exports grew by 15.5 percent year-on-year to $8.2 billion during the first seven months of the FY14 on the back of rising demand in developed economies such as the US and European countries. The US and European markets represent around 65 percent share in the country's total garment exports. In a major breakthrough, an informal Group of Ministers (GoM), constituted by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and headed by Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, recommended a financial package to millers, which included an interestfree loan of Rs 7,500 crore to pay off arrears, which according to the sources in the industry stood at Rs 5064 crore in 2012-13.
