Optical Communications: Nature of Light and light propagation; Ray properties in fibers; Optical devices and components; Optical Sources: LEDs and laser diodes; Optical receivers: APDs and pin diodes; Optical attenuators; Splitters and couplers; optical isolators and circulators; optical filters; Fiber Bragg Gratings. Optical Fiber Technology Fiber characteristics: attenuation and dispersion; Chromatic dispersion and pulse broadening; Optical amplification and signal re-shaping; Fiber Optic Link Engineering; Out side Plant Considerations; System Availability; Fiber in the Local Loop. Optical Networks: Optical switches; Optical routers; WDM and DWDM networks; Access Networks and Optical Networking; Optical Wireless Communications and its role in the next generation optical networks.

Course Objective
To familiarize the students with various engineering design aspects of optical communications and the optical fiber technology. To provide a detailed understanding of optical sources, optical receivers and components. The students would also work through the link budget analysis of optical fibers and would be introduced to optical networks including the WDM and DWDM networks.
