T E C H N O L O G I E S Instruction Manual
For HP 564/920 OEM

Congratulations on your purchase of a BCH product! Carefully read manual to properly install the system and ensure trouble-free printing.

Start-up
Before opening product, perform printer nozzle tests to check printer quality. If test produces a perfect result, attach a copy of the nozzle check to the purchase receipt to validate product warranty. If printer image is missing lines or displays uneven coloring, repeat head cleaning. If second print is similar to the first, let printer sit 2-3 hours and run another nozzle check. If test displays broken lines, complete3rd head cleaning and let sit 3-4 hours (may require 3-4 head cleanings). DO NOT run more than 3 consecutive head cleanings; let printer sit 3-4 hours before another cleaning attempt. If printer still has broken lines, printer head may need replacement.

How do HP 564/920 Cartridges Work?

Cartridge: Water tank:

These cartridges are much like a water tank with a tiny air hole on top and an outlet on the bottom. The air hole is connected to the outside by a labyrinth of air channels (to avoid dust). When the ink is drawn from the bottom, the 1|Page

air flows into the cartridge and thus avoids creating a vacuum. However, the air hole cannot be too large or the ink will be pushed down and leak through the outlet. Inside the cartridge, there are two chambers. Chamber A is filled with sponges. This sponge will regulate the ink pressure and prevent ink from flowing too fast. For XL series (564XL 920XL), there is an opening on the bottom to connect two chambers, so ink can flow from B to A. For non-XL series, there is no connection on the bottom, so chamber B is totally disabled. Therefore, you cannot overfill HP 564 and make it a 564XL.

**Note: Hole in chamber B is for viewing purposes only; do not make a hole in chamber B.

Inside chamber A, there is a large sponge on the top, a smaller sponge on the bottom, and then a filter for the ink outlet.

Refill Method A: Bottom Up

It is best to refill the ink from the underside. Air will escape from the air hole to allow an easy refill. There are ready-made refill systems on the market; the only necessary part is a silicone pad with a hole in the middle. The silicone pad will seal off the ink outlet, and refill ink is injected through the hole.

To make a kit, take a piece of standard pencil eraser and make a hole in the middle. Slowly inject ink until you see ink bubbles coming out of the air channel. For non-XL cartridge, there is an opening connecting the two chambers on the TOP (not on the bottom). If you overfill, the ink will flow to chamber B and become waste.

Refill Method B: Top Down

Put the cartridge on some paper towels in an area where you can tolerate spillage. Seal off the outlet port with the orange cap which came with the original cartridge (If no orange cap, use duct tape to seal off the outlet as shown in diagram). Tighten it with a rubber band. Make sure the seal is tight and will not leak.

For 564XL, 920XL:

Open chamber B, fill it up and then seal it. Do not remove the cartridge label (diagram shown with label removed to demonstrate the relative position of air hole and ink hole). Find the ink chamber about 1/3 of the way from bottom. Use a screwdriver to push the plastic ball into the cartridge and open up chamber B. If this does not push the ball in, drill a hole through it. Fill up chamber B with ink and seal it airtight with hot glue or adhesive tape.

For regular 564, 920 (also works for 564XL, 920XL): There are two methods to refill the cartridge: A) Using a long drill, poke in from chamber B, drill through chamber A on the bottom and make the cartridge from 564 into 564 XL. Then you can refill it like an XL. --Or-B) 1) Carefully remove the cartridge label from the top. 2) Look for the air hole which was covered by the label. It should be at the end of the jagged line. Use a drill to enlarge the hole so a needle can go through 3) Load your syringe and slowly inject the ink. The non-XL series of cartridges hold approximately 4ml of ink. The XL series (564XL/920XL) hold approximately 8ml of ink. When filling the 564XL/920XL, fill as slowly as possible. There is a reservoir that needs to be refilled as well as a sponge. 4) Seal the air hole with duct tape. Use a needle to poke a tiny vent hole. 5) Leave the covering on the outlet port for a full minute. The sponge needs time to absorb the ink. 6) Remove the outlet port cover then place the cartridge over a sink. Let the excess ink drip for a few minutes. The ink will drip but should not pour out; if it does, then the top was not covered correctly. 7) Put the cartridge back in your printer and run 2 or 3 cleaning cycles. If the problem of dripping ink in the printer occurs, this may require a set of silicone seals to seal off the cartridge exit port and prevent ink from leaking. PLEASE NOTE: Resetting the filing level indicator is unfortunately not possible with this type of cartridges. You can ignore the error message by selecting OK. Since the ink level will no longer be recognized by the computer, the cartridge should be refilled as soon as faded colors show during printing. Should the cartridge print in streaks, first refill the cartridge, then start the cleaning cycle using printer software instructions. If the problem remains, fill a bowl with inch of warm water (maximum temperature 90F) and soak the print head (not the cartridge) in it for 1 - 2 hours.

Reference: Continuous Ink System

A CIS (Continuous Ink System) continuously feeds ink into cartridges and eliminates the need to refill them.

The CIS is similar to a pet water dispenser. There are two tank partitions: a large tank holds the greater amount of liquid. The height difference between h1 and h2 (see diagrams below) creates necessary pressure for the CIS to function properly. When liquid is consumed from the smaller tank, liquid flows from the large tank to the small tank.

CIS system:

A DIY set that can be used on HP 564, 920 (regular and XL) series can be purchased at https://www.bchtechnologies.com/continuous-ink-system/ink-system-for-hp/diy-ciss-hp.html To make your cartridge into a CIS is very straight-forward: 1) With an XL cartridge, the ink hole on chamber B is perfect to connect to the feed tubes. For regular cartridge, drill a hole through air hole with the hand drill provided. 2) Fill up the cartridge with ink. 3) Insert sleeve elbow into ink hole (XL) or air hole (regular) and connect ink tubes.

4) Connect supply line. 5) Fill up external tank with ink. 6) To create pressure for proper function, the ink tank must be primed each time the pressure balance is disrupted, either by: (a) installing the CIS, or (b) adding ink. Note: If tank is not primed after adding ink, the ink
can flow into the printer head and then backflow into other cartridges, causing a color to get darker or completely black.

Priming for CIS installation:

7) CIS is ready to use.
