When I first saw Friends show in Austin being featured on Filter Magazines newsletter, I knew I had to watch them once more. Monterrey was lucky to have them in its annual Nrmal Festival, this year catered by Todd P. Having formed on September 2010, Friends recently released their debut full-length album Manifest!, and have since gathered pace. This Brooklyn quintet from Bushwick is certainly a band to follow: its first single, Mind Control, debuted as the Hottest Record in the World on BBC Radio One in April this year. If their last performance in Monterrey hadnt fully convinced me yet, this definitely did. What can one expect to hear from Brooklyns musical export? A set of perky tunes with clipped electro beats topped with tones of punk, dance, and r&b flavors delivering funky pop sounds and playful percussion in the background. Meaning you'll dance your ass off. It is a mix of sounds that reflect the band members music taste and influences along with their constant pursuit to break and shift music paradigms. Every show with Friends is unpredictable. Lead Singer Samantha Urbani, just has this ability to lead the crowd into her own little carnival party on stage. Be it for her flirty and tender vocals in Stay Dreaming or her punk mashing squalls and cries on Ruins, Urbani engages the crowd and brings down any wall standing between the audience and the band.

Most people at the show probably wanted to test this promising band after listening to (maybe) two of their tracks, but I can guarantee a new relationship started between Friends and their Austin audience that very night. We were all crowded in Mohawks little inside stage room waiting for the band to start when it finally did at 12:30 AM. Urbani opened up with an unrecorded track, swinging from one side to the other, slowly seducing the people with her coos. She then made the crowd dance with tunes like Friend Crush and sang closely to everyone standing in front of the stage. Friends lead singer has never liked to distance herself from the audience: I like to talk to people at shows. The more were playing to strangers I really like to see whos out there and to get on a personal level, said Urbani.
If she hadnt already arrived at a personal level with her fans, she definitely did by 1:00 AM. Between songs, Urbani thanked Austins crowd and talked about how hot it was in the room- we were all dripping sweat but really didn't mind though. Before anyone else could say it, keyboardist and guitarist Nikki Shapiro yelled, Its Austin! Laughing about it, Urbani took her shirt off and invited the audience to do so while showing her boobs off on stage. Some girls did and joined her while I stood besides them bitter with my shirt on dancing non-stop as the fans rushed after her when she stepped off stage to sing into some lucky peoples ears. The crowd was beyond wired and ignited with Friends by this stage of the night. Bassist Lesley Hann toughened up and joined the lead singer after taking a big sip from what seemed to be a bottle of whiskey. Urbani, stripped of any inhibitions, stayed topless all through the show and after in Mohawks little private room upstairs with a few fans and the rest of her crew.

Be it for their playful and outrageous pop dance tunes or simply for Urbanis boobs prancing around on stage, Friends definitely made some new devoted fans that night.

Not only did I leave that night with a girl crush on Urbani, but I also had an overwhelming need to get my hands on Manifest!

Shine November 27, 2012 at 3:49 PM Hi. Thanks for the great description of what looks like an awesome show. Love the spontaneous natural spirit. Rockin, dancing & heating up, take you shirts off & breathe (like da boys get to)...a move in the right direction. Anyway thanks for the post--i stumbled on this and read some comments (always scarey) elsewhere that were so misogynistic that this is refreshing. Reply Replies Blawgger November 29, 2012 at 1:40 PM
