John Carlos Visits CA U to Promote New Book

By Sequoyah Armour Staff Writer

Found in several history books is the iconic black fist illustration, one of Olympic Bronze Medalist John Carlos and Tommie Smith. The controversial action raised eyebrows across the world in 1968, the same year Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. died. Clark Atlanta University began Black History Month on the right foot this year, with speaker John Carloss book signing. Carloss book, The John Carlos Story: The Sports Mo ment That Changed the World was published just last year. You dont know much about my history. You had a picture in your history book but it never told you about where the demonstration came from, said John Carlos. He told students, Im not different from you, and except when it was time to step up I did. Carlos and Smith were booed after the demonstration and received criticism even afterwards. We have two minds but we are like Siamese twins. We stuck together for eternity, said Carlos. Audience members applauded, agreeing with Carlos and took pictures during the presentation. Carloss message was not just a timeline of what hap pened in Mexico City at the Olympics, but challenged CAU students to stay committed. Am I committed to making this a better society? is the question Carlos asked the auditorium of students. Born in 1945, Carlos has lived a good life and made the changes he was born to create. The ball is in your court, ready or not its coming, he said. The track and field star used the Olympics as an outlet to bring awareness to the cause. Where a man of his power may never have had the opportunity again, Carlos made a brave move that went down in history. People thought we were out to destroy America which is so far from the truth, Carlos said. The controversial pose and iconic image is a lifelong story that will remain with Carlos. Carlos, being a college graduate himself, explained to students that education would take them far. Only person that can take knowledge away from you is God, he said. The John Carlos Story: The Sports Moment That Changed the World is in stores now.
