(06 marks) Explain the term pozzolana with reference to the formation, their inherent properties and name two other artificial pozzolana types stating their origin, and their contributory uses in the concrete based construction. (07 marks) Compare the advantageous points in using pozzolana cements for producing concretes instead of Ordinary Portland Cement. Point out the undesirable factors associated with the same. Discuss the influence of the moisture content of timber on the general and structural properties and the means employed to avoid or minimize the problem. (06 marks) Enumerate six important factors considered for the selection of timber by visual grading, in addition to the strength factor. Give short explanatory notes on each. (06 marks) Wood preservation is an exceptional treatment needed for timber items. Explain the purposes expected by this process and state the essential properties needed in a preservative material. Defects developing in construction materials lead to disruption of the building, resulting in additional costs continuing with cumbersome maintenance i. Discuss the term workability of a concrete mix, stating how it affects the quality characteristics of the concrete, and discuss four factors that would influence on this property. Name two methods, employed to assess the workability of a concrete. (05 marks) Explain briefly the occurrence of Segregation in concrete, stating its undesirable effects on the concrete quality. Give four factors or situations which contribute to segregation, during the production process.. (06 marks) Efflorescence is one familiar defect encountered on brick wall or concrete surfaces. Explain the nature of this failure, with the probable causes and the corrective measures employed. (02 marks)

Blistering and peeling, Cracking and scaling, and Alligatering are three main defects discovered in painted surfaces. Explain the nature of these defects with the underlying causes and the suitable measures to prevent such. (04 marks) Dry rot and wet rot are two defects associated with timber.
