8 External recruitment Sources

. PRESS ADVERTISEMENTS
Advertisements of the vacancy in newspapers and journals are a widely used source of
recruitment. The main advantage of this method is that it has a wide reach.

2. EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTES
Various management institutes, engineering colleges, medical Colleges etc. are a good source
of recruiting well qualified executives, engineers, medical staff etc. They provide facilities for
campus interviews and placements. This source is known as Campus Recruitment.

3. PLACEMENT AGENCIES
Several private consultancy firms perform recruitment functions on behalf of client companies
by charging a fee. These

agencies are particularly suitable for recruitment of executives and specialists. It is also known
as RPO (Recruitment Process Outsourcing)

4. EMPLOYMENT EXCHANGES
Government establishes public employment exchanges throughout the country. These
exchanges provide job information to job seekers and help employers in identifying
suitable candidates.

5. LABOUR CONTRACTORS
Manual workers can be recruited through contractors who maintain close contacts with
the sources of such workers. This source is used to recruit labour for construction jobs.

6. UNSOLICITED APPLICANTS
Many job seekers visit the office of well-known companies on their own. Such callers
are considered nuisance to the daily work routine of the enterprise. But can help in
creating the talent pool or the database of the probable candidates for the organisation.

7. EMPLOYEE REFERRALS / RECOMMENDATIONS


Many organisations have structured system where the current employees of the
organisation can refer their friends and relatives for some position in their organisation.
Also, the office bearers of trade unions are often aware of the suitability of candidates.
Recruitment Management can inquire these leaders for suitable jobs. In some
organizations these are formal agreements to give priority in recruitment to the
candidates recommended by the trade union.

8. RECRUITMENT AT FACTORY GATE


Unskilled workers may be recruited at the factory gate these may be employed
whenever a permanent worker is absent. More efficient among these may be recruited
to fill permanent vacancies.

External sources of recruitment include:

a) Trade Journals and Newspapers

Employment advertising in Trade Journals, National and Local newspapers such as the Times
and Guardian, is an important source of applicants. It is unlawful and contrary to College
policy to exclude or to express a preference for any particular group of applicants as detailed
in the Equal Opportunities policy and the Code of Practice on Disability in Employment. Care
must be taken to ensure that publications used for employment advertising have a diverse
readership with significant minority representation.

b) Internet

It is the policy of the College to use the internet for recruitment. All vacancies will be
advertised on the jobs.ac.uk website, (through a hyperlink from Birkbeck’s intranet site). The
use of the internet as an advertising media allows the College access to a wide group of
potential employees. However, since the internet is accessed worldwide, care must be taken
regarding the applicant’s eligibility to work in the UK (please refer to the Recruitment &
Selection Guide for further information).

c) Employee Referrals

Current employees may refer potentially suitable candidates to apply for employment.
However, care must be taken to balance such referrals with other sources of applicants in
order to encourage diversity in the College’s work force. Where possible, employees should
not be directly supervised by a partner or by another member of their family especially where
access to confidential information could lead to a conflict of interest. Further information can

policy.

d) Employment Consultancies and Agencies

The College may occasionally use specifically appointed consultancies or agencies for
recruitment. The Human Resources team will make all arrangements for the use of
consultancies or agencies

Employment Contract Model

Every employee is entitled to an employment contract, no matter what industry you
work in. Below we provide an example of what an employment contract could look
like and what items should be included in every employment contract.

4. Termination of employment
Either party can terminate this agreement with four weeks written notice. In the case
where an employee is illiterate notice may be given by that employee verbally.

5.1 The employee/s wage shall be paid in cash on the last working day of every
week/month and shall be:

7. Meal Intervals

applicable). Lunchtime will be taken from 13h00 to 13h30 daily.

8. Sunday work
Any work on Sundays will be by agreement between the parties from time to time. If
the employee works on a Sunday he/she shall be paid double the wage for each hour
worked.

9. Public Holidays
The employee will be entitled to all official public holidays on full pay. If an employee
does not work on a public holiday, he/she shall receive normal payment for that day.
If the employee works on a public holiday he/she shall be paid double.

10. Annual Leave


10.1 The employee is entitled to five days paid leave after every 12 months of
continuous service. Such leave is to be taken at times convenient to the employer
and the employer may require the employee to take his/her leave at such times as
coincide with that of the employer.

11. Sick Leave


11.1 During every sick leave cycle of 36 months the employee will be entitled to an
amount of paid sick leave equal to the number of days the employee would normally
work during a period of six weeks.
11.2 During the first six months of employment the employee will entitled to one
day’s paid sick leave for every 26 days worked.
11.3 The employee is to notify the employer as soon as possible in case of his/her
absence from work through illness.
12. Maternity Leave

2.1 The employee will be entitled to 30 days maternity leave without pay

13. Family Responsibility Leave


The employee will be entitled to three days family responsibility leave during each
leave cycle.

14. Deductions from Remuneration


The employer may not deduct any monies from the employee’s wage unless the
employee has agreed to this in writing on each occasion.
