THE SHIFT-IT GRAPHIC COACHING PROCESS
This Merkley Map is part of a larger Graphic Coaching process called SHIFT-IT.
SHIFT-IT is a seven-stage process to assist individuals in doing their own personal visioning
and planning work. There are 17 visual templates in the process (called Merkley Maps). These
tools can be used in order, or separately to supplement other coaching or personal development
work.

well done!!!
By now, you have completed all seven stages of SHIFT-IT, with up to 16 of the individual maps
completed. You have noted your Satisfaction Interrupted Harvested Your History Investi-
gated Your Now Focused on Your Future completed your Trouble at the Border work as
well as Ink It Dont Just Think It and your Take Action plans. Whew --- that is a lot of inner and
outer work. Bravo on your commitment and dedication Im impressed!
This Declaration of Intent map is a nal place to declare your intentions loud and clear. To sum-
marize what you claim and release. And to write and witness your commitment and intention
as you step into your desired future.
SHIFT-IT is deep and special work. It is not everyday (or even every year or decade!) that you
complete a full evolutional scan of your past, present and desired future. As such, it is important
to reect and bring proper closure to your experience. To take a moment to summarize this
particular round of SHIFT-IT (as each round is unique and different). The Declaration of Intent
map will help you do exactly that.

STEP BY STEP DIRECTIONS:
STEP 1: GATHER MATERIALS AND CREATE QUIET SPACE:
Create Quiet Space
Create a quiet space for yourself, where you arent likely to be disturbed. Set aside about 30
minutes to complete this exercise.
Gather Materials
Youll need this Map (Declaration of Intent), plus a pen or pencil. Youll also want to have
your other completed SHIFT-IT maps (as this Map is a closing move to The SHIFT-IT Graphic
Coaching Process it wont make much sense on its own!)
USE PEN OR MARKER:
Using pens or markers as opposed to
pencil is recommended, as ink will last
longer than pencil (you may want to
preserve these maps for a while).

STEP 2: WRITE A CLOSING LETTER TO YOURSELF:
As a way to bring closure to your SHIFT-IT Process, take 15-30 minutes to write a letter to your-
self. This is a special letter. It is a letter that is from yourself and to yourself.
As you stand poised, ready to complete the nal move of your SHIFT-IT retreat, take a few
minutes to write down your main thoughts and reections. Note the main insights, ahhas and
revelations you have received by way of doing this deep and reective work.
You will receive this letter sometime in the future (you will be giving it to somebody you trust
to mail it back to you sometime in the next 4-12 months --- dont worry, youll give it to them
sealed and in a self-addressed stamped envelope, so theyll never view it or see it --- its for-
your-eyes-only).
So write to yourself from this unique vantage point while your SHIFT-IT experience is fresh and
bubbling. Your current self is writing to the self you will be in a few months time. What do you
need to communicate to that self? What does s/he need to know or be reminded of?

Seal in a Self-Addressed, Stamped Envelope:
Take as much time as you need. You may just write a
short one-page note to yourself, or you may wish to write
a lengthy letter, with several pages. Whatever feels ap-
propriate.
When you have completed your letter, seal it in an enve-
lope and address it to yourself, complete with name and
mailing address. Add the appropriate amount of stamps
that it will take for your friend or colleague to mail it back
to you.
Give Your Envelope to a Trusted Person:
Select a trusted person to give your letter to. It might be a family member, a friend, or a col-
league. Or perhaps someone who has also done the SHIFT-IT Process --- youll know who to
ask to do this for you.
This person will be responsible for mailing your letter back to you at some point in the future.
Tell this person that they are to mail the letter to you when it feels like the right time to do so.
Sometime in the next 4-12 months. Tell them that they will just intuitively know when it is the
right time to send it to you that they can just trust their gut and toss it into a mailbox when
the time is right. That something will remind them to do it and it will all work out ne.
You or they might want to write the date that you gave the letter to them on the back of the
envelope as a little note that they can refer to, to remind them how much time has passed
since you gave them your letter.
Let your letter go with this person, knowing that youll see it again, sometime in the future ---
probably when you need a good reminder about your Vision and what you are in the process of
creating for yourself.

STEP 3: STATE KEY THINGS YOU RELEASE & CLAIM:
Now turn your attention back to your Declaration of Intent map. You are now going to harvest
some of the main points of your letter as a way of summarizing your key thoughts as you bring
closure to your SHIFT-IT Retreat.

Take a moment to note the main things you are releasing, as you stand ready to step into the
next chapter of your life.

Now, turn to considering the things that you are stepping over the line into. Write down the
main things that you are claming for yourself:

STEP 4: COMPOSE TOP 3 CLOSING COMMENTS:
Continuing with your Declaration of Intent map, what are the three top sayings or comments
that you need to express as you get ready to step over the line into your future? In order to
help you really feel this and identify your three main expressions, consider creating an actually
line that you can set up to step over.
Literally Create a Line to Step Over:
At this nal stage of your SHIFT-IT process you are literally stepping over a border or line into
your future. You are moving from one stage (the stage of planning and preparation) to another
stage of real-world tangibility.
In order to make this line more real and vital, consider actually creating some sort of line or
border to step over. Make a physical or outer symbol to represent the inner, psychological line
you are crossing over.
You might do this by making a line on your oor with masking tape. Or pulling out some string
or rope. Or, use something long and narrow: like a ski pole, golf club, or long ruler. Think of
one side as your current world and the other side as the world of your desired, best-case sce-
nario future. The world where your Vision lives and exists, just waiting for you to allow it and
manifest it.
Stand at the Line and Compose Your Statements:
After constructing your line, and determining which side is which, stand on the side that repre-
sents your present circumstances.
With your Map in your hand or close to you, consider what you have written in your release and
claim sections. And, really feel the separation of the line between your now and your desired
future. Make it real (because it is). What else needs to be said, before you step over the line
and make a symbolic (and literally!) move into your future?

STEP 5: SPEAK AND THEN SYMBOLICALLY STEP
OVER THE LINE:
When you are ready, settle yourself, take a deep breath and say your three top comments
aloud.
Speak out whatever it is that needs to be spoken at this critical threshold of your SHIFT-IT work.
This is an important moment. Savor it. Respect it. Dont rush it. Instead, take your time and
say what you need to say to honor this step that you are taking.
Step Over the Line:
When you are ready. Step over the line. Step boldly into the realm of your future --- the realm
of your Vision that is pulling you towards it.
Feel the signicance of this moment. You may feel a rush of excitement or exhilaration. Or no-
tice a subtle shift taking place. Or, you may not feel too much of anything. That is ok. Go with
whatever comes up for you. Your rational mind will place all kinds of things onto this moment,
but your deeper mind has acknowledged the commitments and intentions that you have written
and spoken. It has taken note of what you desire and is already putting things into play that will
assist you in getting what you want.

STEP 6: SIGN, DATE & WITNESS YOUR INTENTION:
As a nal step, sign and date your Declaration of Intent map. If you have done this process with
another person present (or in a coaching group), act as witnesses for one another and sign on
the witness line.
Sign and Date Your Map (and Witness If Doing With Another).
And, Remove Your Line You Aint Going Back!
Before you wrap up, be sure to remove the line you constructed so you dont step back over it!
You have made the step. You have committed. There aint no going back even if you wanted
to. The gears have been put in motion. So, remove the symbolic line you have crossed you
are now in the land of your Vision.
Trust That Seeds Have Been Planted:
Over the next months and years your Vision will unfold. Bit by bit and iota-by-iota. Like a seed
that has been planted, trust in the growing process that is happening, even if the sprouts havent
quite burst into the visible world yet. They will. One day visible signs will emerge and youll
nd yourself living in the world that was once just a gment of your SHIFT-IT Process!
When You Get Into A Tight Place And Everything Goes
Against You, Till It Seems As Though You Could Not Hold

STEP 7: SEEK ONGOING SUPPORT & ASSISTANCE:
It will be important to keep the energy and gestalt of your SHIFT-IT Process alive and to imple-
ment the beings and doings of your Take Action Plan. Thinking and envisioning your desired
end state will do a lot for you, but unfortunately (or fortunately!) there is no substitute for
aligned action. You must keep moving and taking action small, measured steps do add up to
signicant change and transformation over time. So keep taking steps, even if they are small
ones!
Seek Help & Like Minded Individuals:
Find other people who can relate to and encourage your plans for yourself. When we are in the
process of becoming our next self, it is often necessary to shed or change previous relationships
and replace or supplement them with people with new kinds of thoughts, attitudes and ways of
living life.
Create a Mastermind or Support Buddy Structure:
A great way to keep the momentum going is to create a mastermind group or create some
sort of support buddy relationship. Mastermind groups are groups where like-minded individu-
als come together on a regular basis to support and encourage one another. They operate by
shared ground rules and require balanced participation and involvement. Consider forming one
with other folks who have done the SHIFT-IT Process, or recruit a couple of friends to create
one. Support buddies are just a smaller version of a mastermind group. Where groups of two
or three come together for the same kind of purpose.
Apathy, Procrastination or Paralysis: Get a Coach!
The coaching profession is all about helping people create great lives and livelihoods. If you
run into a major case of apathy, procrastination or analysis paralysis consider hiring a coach, at
least to get you over the hump.
Coaches make great condential listening companions and strategy consultants. Different coach-
es have different styles, so be sure to shop around for one that ts you, your temperament and
your goals. Some coaches are process coaches who help you deal with the ups and downs of
whatever you are dealing with and other coaches have unique specialties and expertise areas:
like small business coaches, internet marketing or money coaches or coaches who deal strictly
with a niche population: like retirement coaches or coaches who work with new moms or people
with attention decit disorder (ADD) and the like.

Of course, here at SHIFT-IT Coach, Inc we are happy to offer you many different kinds of in-per-
son and tele-coaching services --- AND your SHIFT-IT maps are a great resource to share with
WHICHEVER kind of coach is best for you.
And, Get the Word Out to Others:
Your maps also act as great communication tools, should you wish to share your work with oth-
ers (family, friends, colleagues, counseling professionals, nancial advisors, etc). So let those
close to you (and whom you trust) in on your vision and plans. Help can come from many ex-
pected and unexpected places so get the word out on what you are creating!

Create a SHIFT-IT le folder or binder to collect your notes and manuals in.

Personal inquiry process called the work. Four

enable one to see what is troubling in an en-
tirely different light. Process for loving what

As a spiritual teacher Tolles work is pretty
deep, however its a great reminder to be in
the now as opposed to focusing on the past
and the future ( a tricky balancing act when
one is doing visioning and planning work!). A
great grounding tool for those of us who are so
future-oriented he helps us to center and be
where everything happens in the now.

BERT HELLINGER / TRANS-GENERA-
TIONAL FAMILY CONSTELLATIONS
Fascinating family systems work that consid-
ers impact of events/issues/confusions of
one generation on subsequent generations.
German therapist Bert Hellinger maintains there
are natural laws or order in a family system
(Orders of Love) that can be restored once dis-
rupted. Hellinger has international network of
practitioners who are certied in his approach.

THE ENNEAGRAM
DON RICHARD RISO
The enneagram is a very useful tool for those
dedicated to their own growth and self-aware-
ness. I often introduce my coaching clients to
it. Don Riso is one of my favorite authors out
of the pick of enneagram teachers. He offers
an online test to help you determine your type
and offers pointers for growth and integration
once you have determined your type. There
is lots of free, useful content on his site. I
recommend his workshops if you are interest-
ed in really learning about this complex and
fascinating tool. His books are a little more
psychologically complex than some of the
other authors.

DAVID DANIELS AND HELEN PALMER
Two other well respected enneagram teach-
ers. She is known for her panel technique
that groups people together on panels to help
highlight the differences between the types.
The site has useful video clips and other in-
formation. Recommend her books as a useful
starting place for beginners.

If you have studied the Enneagram for a while,
this woman is an excellent resource to take
your understanding to a new and deeper lev-
el. Focusing on the spiritual applications of
the tool, she points us to the deeper reasons

together. She is also a Diamond Heart teacher
in the tradition of A.H. Almaas.

MYERS-BRIGGS TYPE INDICATOR
The ever-popular Myers Briggs Type indicator
is based on the work of Carl Jung. This typol-
ogy tool is used extensively in organizations
to help people better understand themselves
and others. Good tool for team building and
