TODAY’S MASS TEXTS Entrance Antiphon Esther 13:9.10-11 O Lord, you had just cause to judge men as you did: because we sinned against you and disobeyed your will. But now show us your greatness of heart, and treat us with your unbounded kindness. First Reading Numbers 11:25-29 Are you jealous on my account? If only the whole people of the Lord were prophets! Responsorial Psalm Ps 18:8.10-.12-14.R.v.9 R: The precepts of the Lord gladden the heart. The law of the Lord is perfect, it revives the soul. The rule of the Lord is to be trusted it gives wisdom to the simple. (R) The fear of the Lord is holy, abiding for ever. The decrees of the Lord are truth and all of them just. (R) So in them your servant finds instruction; great reward is in their keeping. But who can detect all his errors? From hidden faults acquit me. (R) From presumption restrain your servant and let it not rule me. Then shall I be blameless, clean from grave sin. (R) Second Reading James 5:1-6 Your wealth is all rotting. Gospel Acclamation: John 17:17 Alleluia, alleluia! Your word is truth, O Lord, consecrate us in the truth. Alleluia! Gospel: Mark 9:38-43.45.47-48 Anyone who is not against us is for us. FR. JOHN’S DESKTOP On Wednesday the news media reported that Pope Benedict XVI will make a State Visit to Britain. This means that he will be coming at the invitation of Her Majesty the Queen and the British Government. When Pope John Paul II visited in 1982, it was a pastoral visit, i.e. at the invitation of the Bishops of the respective hierarchies (England & Wales, Scotland). At the time of writing there is no official confirmation from Buckingham Palace but „people‟ are talking about the visit taking place next September, possibly coinciding with the beatification of John Henry Cardinal Newman in Birmingham. Pope Benedict is known to have a keen interest in the life and writings of the late Cardinal Newman, probably the most famous convert from the Church of England to the Catholic Church. Let us pray that we may prepare well for this visit and that the visit will be a success. In the meantime, the relics of St Thérèse continue their tour of the country. Crowds are flocking to attend Masses in her honour and to have the opportunity of touching the casket containing the Saint‟s remains, in many places queuing throughout the night. If you have access to the internet, you can see pictures and reports at http://catholicrelics.wordpress.com/. So let us continue our preparation for the visit of the relics to Aylesford which is expected to be a huge event. The programme at Aylesford is on the notice board and can be downloaded from http://www.thefriars.org.uk/retreatpilgrim/Therese Programme.pdf. Copies are available in the church foyer for those who th th do not have internet access. If you would like to have a rose placed near the relics during the weekend of 9 – 11 th October for you or a loved one, orders must be sent to The Friars by 30 September. Forms are available in the church foyer. If you would like a seat on the coach to Aylesford, sign up as places are disappearing. If you plan to go by car, leave in plenty of time! th th The relics will also be at Westminster Cathedral 12 – 15 October. The schedule of services is on the notice board and is available via http://www.rcdow.org.uk/therese/. Entrance to services marked with an asterisk is by free ticket only. To obtain tickets either apply to the parish office or email Archbishop McDonald‟s private secretary Fr Philip Glandfield (aps@rcsouthwark.co.uk). The visit of St Thérèse‟s relics is a time of grace for us. St Thérèse‟s feast day is this Thursday. Why not make a special effort to come to Mass that day? Fr. John

DISCOVERING PRIESTHOOD DAY th Saturday 17 October, 9am – 3pm at St Augustine‟s Catholic Church, Tunbridge Wells, for lads aged 12 – 18. Information and bookings: Fr Marcus Holden, 01892 522525, revmarcusholden @yahoo.co.uk. See Fr John and notice board for further details. HARVEST FAST DAY nd Harvest Fast Day is kept this Friday 2 October. The second collection next Sunday will be for Aid to the Church in Need to assist them in their work of aiding our suffering Christian brothers and sisters around the world. PARISH DIRECTOR OF MUSIC Many parishes have a director of music to train the choir and help lead the people in singing. Maybe we should have one for this parish. Normally they are paid for their services. In this way the parish can be sure of commitment and the music director has an incentive to work. I am happy to consider this possibility. If you or anyone you know might be interested, they should get in contact via the parish office. The candidate need not necessarily be a Catholic but he/she should have some knowledge of liturgical music and must be prepared to work with the parish priest. Fr John. FAST FOR LIFE AND GOOD COUNSEL NETWORK Good Counsel Network have asked if we might fast on Tuesday th 29 September, feast of St Michael and the Archangels, praying for the end of abortion and euthanasia. Michael Almond, who retired this July after 34 years in the Ambulance Service in Leeds, was disturbed to learn that Sister Chinedum was sometimes left on her own praying in front of an abortion centre in Bedford Square in London. So he plans to cycle from his home in Leeds to London, about 270 miles, to join Sr Chinedum th and other supporters at the centre on 7 October, feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, between 11am and 1pm. If you would like to sponsor Mr Almond, please sign up on the sponsor sheet on the notice board or hand your donation into the parish office. For more information contact 020 7723 1740. HAVE WE FORGOTTEN WHAT IT IS TO BE CATHOLIC? (13) (From Fit for Mission? Church by Bishop Patrick O‟Donoghue) Those who have racist, sexist or homophobic attitudes forget they are Catholic.
